But am I having a stroke or didn't Absolute Magnitude close down two years ago? Also, I'm going to go ahead and be the big party-pooper who reminds everyone that if you post a full story openly on the internet (that is, not password protected or whatever), it is thereafter considered "published", as in, you can no longer sell "first rights", which is what most magazines buy. To avoid this, post only excerpts or post your stories in password protected critique forums (absolutewrite.com has an excellent "Share your work" section).

To aid you in your search for magazines:

Duotrope's Digest (A Resource for Fiction Writers & Poets)
Quintamid
Spicy Green Iguana - The Speculative Fiction Magazine Resource Site

Good luck!
Thanks for the help. Digital Samurai was kind of abandoned sometime back. And thanks for the grammar though, but yeah, I don't think I proof read it. In general, I wanted some fast feedback and the internet is best for that, but I don't publish anything online that I'm really trying to sell. I can't remember if AM closed down or not. I thought I saw it on shelves at some point, but that could have been a while back, perhaps even more than two years.
I didn't know that about the "first rights" thing. But if you remove your story from the internet before you send it to magazines, first rights should still apply, I mean, after all, the story no longer exists as is. And you still own the rights to the story, even if you publish it online, so to speak, so can't you still use it as you please?

Found a mention! Huzzah for my amazing powers of research! (All right, so I just googled it...).

Ceased publication in 2006. But they belonged to DNA, so your submission might be sent on to one of their active magazines.

As for first rights... The thing with putting something on the internet is that even after you remove it, it may still be out there. For example, I can google "chipmunks" and find a page about chipmunks, but when I click the link it says "site removed" or whatever, but if I click the cache link it'll bring up a cache of the site as it was before it was removed. Same goes for any story. If you sell a story or article to a magazine, you're selling either first rights (you give that magazine the right to be the first to ever publish that particular piece), or re-print rights (the story or article has already been in print, but not in this particular market, or long ago, or maybe your story is being re-printed in an anthology and so on), and if the editor you sold the piece to googles it and finds out that it's freely available to anyone who types in the title or such, even though the editor's magazine paid to be the first (and so far only) source of said piece, there might be a wee bit of trouble. If the finished story or article is vastly different from the version posted online, it's a whole other thing, of course.

If you want quick feedback and the like, I really recommend the "Share your work" section at absolutewrite.com. Their forums are password protected (the passwords are visible to all members, so there's no hassle with PMing or e-mailing and waiting to be let into the inner circle or anything :lol : ), so whatever you post there doesn't count as officially published, since it's only available to a limited group of people.

Alright, excellent. I really appreciate the advice. I'll check out that website and do something like that. Again, thank you very much. I'm afraid the legal side of publishing always escaped me, probably because I wanted to stay blind and naive, oh well.

Check out the Writers Market books if you're in the states. They are the God of writing texts and you can easily get them at the reference section of your local library. Just ask at the reference (or front) desk. They have addresses of agents, publishers, fiction magazines, non-fiction magazines, as well as advice about writing query letters and getting published. For books about writing, just go to amazon.com's search engine and type in writing or fiction writing or some other key word and check out what pop's up. I know Stephen King has a book called On Writing that I used for a class once, and then one by John Gardner but I don't remember what it was called. So you might just try those. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the quick response. I have read the On writing book, and have just recently got my hands on two writer's market books (2008 edition market and poetry market 2008)

In particular though does anyone know of any WOMEN's or magazines that take fiction? I recently wrote a very short piece. Its jsut over a 1,000 words and it would fit in well with a 'be good to yourself no matter what size you are' thing.

Also, I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction of a trust worthy beta-reader/editor for my short stories, I have two in a series they are around 1,000 words each so not too much to handle.

I'm so glad I found this thread . Has anyone had the problem of when you plan on writing a certain story after the one you are currently working on, a new idea just hits your head and all of a sudden, you want to write that one?

Yes. Definitely. Way too many ideas slamming around and jumping up and down for attention at one moment. Then the next moment....none of them want 'out'.

Been a while here! Wow. Good to see some original fic writers here I don't know if anyone has done this method of staying motivated but I've recently developed a blog/site for the novel I'm working on...mainly going to use the post as a way for readers to gain some insight. Plus, since I have ambitions to make it a series of books, I think it'll serve as something nice to read about the character's POV down the road.

I've even assigned actors who I envision as these characters because they have certain qualities I find in my writing.

What are the methods you've used to stay on the ball with your characters?

No worries. The legal side makes my tongue go fuzzy, too.

Depends on what your genre is, really. For starters, give these a try.

Manuscript Format: Short Story.

Manuscript Format: Novel.

Manuscript Format: Poem.

Absolute Write.

Preditors and Editors.

Script Formatting.

Scriptologist.

Script Templates for MS Word.

BBC's Writer's room. (For UK-based and European writers, obviously.)

Miss Snark.

Grammar:

Common Errors.

Webgrammar's list. (Includes links to all sorts of useful stuff, not just grammar, for when you're doing research for your next book/story/article.)

Markets:

Duotrope, a "database of over 2250 current markets for short fiction, poetry, and novels/collections." Basically, you choose your genre, length, etc, and click search. Lists pay, open/closed, and divides makets into pro. semi-pro, etc.

Quintamid. (list of magazines and such accepting Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror. Not nearly as updated as duotrope, so always doublecheck somewhere else before submitting, but a good basic list none the less).

Spicy Green Iguana. Listing of genre magazines. Lists printed and web-based ones.

Story Pilot. Engine for Science Fiction and Fantasy markets.
