As far as I know, he was told to play it 'like he was in love with her' but at some point I think he was supposed to be gay.

I don't know what to believe

but there were more than a few hints that he was, heh. Even in one of the graphic novels.. when Elle is stalking Claire at school, she sees her and Zach together and wonders if they're together, and then says something like "No, I don't think either of them want that"

so I'm thinking whoever wrote that one was probably in the he's gay camp, heh.
