WHY DO WE LOVE LEIGHTON?

I love Blair Waldorf. I love her determination, her drive, her insecurities, her creation of a fairy tale world which she desperately holds onto, and yet knows is going to come crashing down on her. I also love her fears—the ones that the show provokes so cruelly—and her loyalty, which is even more cruelly tested. The wicked queen, the girl who can't go to the ball, the princess in a tiara—Blair manages to be every fairytale archetype, every Hepburn movie, every modern girl striving, all in one.
What could be a mishmash of traits resulting in an shallow and confusing character somehow manages to work because of one reason: Leighton Meester. Her ability to bring layers to Blair always astonishes me. She always gets to me, and makes me believe in all of Blair's sides, and the depth of her love for others, and the great tragedy that no one ever quite manages to love her enough in return. It's even more amazing when I see Leighton play a schizophrenic or a teasing ingenue elsewhere and there's no hint of Blair. There's so much to love about Leighton—her 'yeah, why not take risks' approach to fashion, her consistent graciousness, her warm words about her castmates, her sense of humor, her classic beauty, and her adorable little dog—but to me, it's her talent and work ethic that stand out the most. Combining all these things together? Well, there's only one Leighton and that's why we all love her.
