I love this part: Seemingly on top of the world with more money than he could have dreamed of and a great girl (Meester), Nick soon realizes that by making his own rules he's put himself and everyone he loves in grave danger.

Indie film focuses on Boston’s Italian mob

As Johnny Depp gets ready to film yet another Boston Irish mob flick, Hollywood has just scooped up the rights to the other side of the story — a saga about the Hub’s Italian gangsters.

“God Only Knows,” a flick written by Reading homey Emilio Mauro and starring Ben Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia”), Leighton Meester (“Gossip Girl”), Harvey Keitel (“Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction”), Toby Jones (“The Hunger Games”), Kenny Wormald (“Footloose”) and Slaine (“The Town”), was acquired by Millennium Entertainment. The indie, shot in the North End and Rhode Island last fall, will hit the megaplexes in December.

“We’ll probably do a Boston premiere and that will be the official premiere so we hope to get most or all of the cast there,” Mauro told the Track.

The film, directed by Rhode Island homey James Mottern, tells the story of an ambitious young gangster played by Barnes who goes behind his boss’ (Keitel’s) back to expand the business. Which, of course, is never a good idea. Mayhem ensues.

“There have been a lot of great crime movies that have taken place in Boston and explored neighborhoods and individuals in South Boston and Charlestown, but never a film where the setting and backdrop is the Mafia, Italians or the North End,” Mauro said. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Mauro’s next project is “The Middleman,” a TV series for FOX that Ben Affleck is executive producing. It’s about an FBI agent, a la John Connolly, who gets a little too close to his informants. Mauro said the pilot, written with Southie filmmaker Michael Yebba, will be shot “as soon as everyone’s schedule clears.”

But with Ben all booked to play Batman and direct the Dennis Lehane thriller “Live By Night,” God Only Knows when that will be!
