LOS ANGELES — Sharpay has been unleashed. Ashley Tisdale, the actress who brought High School Musical's snobby bad-girl Sharpay Evans to life, steps outside the Disney fold this Friday, starring in Aliens in the Attic, her first post-HSM feature. And she's not stopping there: Tisdale's sophomore album, Guilty Pleasure, aimed at a more mature audience, hit shelves Tuesday. In Aliens in the Attic, Tisdale plays college-bound high school student Bethany Pearson, whose family's vacation home in Michigan gets invaded by pint-sized aliens. She shot the film just before High School Musical 3, knowing it would be the first thing fans see after she finished the Disney trilogy. The New Jersey native, 24, says she's taking her career to the next level but is in no rush to grow up or out of her niche. "I'm easing into it," she says. "If you go too far, that can kind of hurt you. So I just take baby steps. Once you're playing the older roles, you're there forever after that. You can never go backward. So I'm taking my time getting there." Tisdale's Guilty Pleasure, a guitar-driven record on which she co-wrote five songs, pays homage to her musical influences, including Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. "The subjects (of the songs) are a little bit more mature. There's a lot of breakup songs, and then there are songs that are role-playing in a relationship, and innuendos like 'I like what you do to my hair,' so I think you know where that is going," she says, slightly embarrassed. "As a young kid, you don't listen to what they're saying or what they're singing about. You like the beat. You like the music." One thing Tisdale doesn't like: "the Hollywood life." "I've gone to clubs before because I love to dance … but I don't drink or do drugs or smoke. That's something that's not typical, I guess," she says. "I think I'm a big hypochondriac. I see people and it's sad what happens to people when they go down these roads — really talented people." Plus, "I've never liked the taste of alcohol. It's not like I haven't had it before. I just don't like the taste. At an early age, I was like, 'So why would I do this?' I've never been a weak person. I'm very strong. I've never given into peer pressure. My mom instilled confidence in me, and I always felt if I'm going to do something, it's because I want to do it." Tisdale hopes to tour with her album, and though she doesn't have any more movies lined up, Aliens director John Schultz says her future is bright. "She is like a young Barbra Streisand. She can really be a big comedic actress and then belt out a tune and probably direct a movie in the future," Schultz says. "I hope that she doesn't try to be something she's not. Everybody always wants to do dramatic and meaty roles — and she probably will do that and do it very well. But she has a gift of comedy that she should never step too far away from. " Here's what Ashley has to say on other issues: On the cast hierarchy of HSM: "When I'm in a movie, I'm not one of those people who forgets their place. I was a third lead in that movie. I was not the star of High School Musical. It was always based on Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens' characters. I loved my character — she was amazing — but she wasn't the star." On growing up in the spotlight: "My mom and dad wanted me to have a normal childhood, so I went to regular school my whole life so I could have those experiences. I worked in clothing stores growing up, even though I didn't really have to. They wanted me to learn the value of a dollar. At an early age, I knew what I wanted." On her personality: "I can be stubborn sometimes and headstrong, but I honestly think it's because I know what I want in life." On the paparazzi and tabloids: "They just try to get a reaction out of you so they can sell it and say 'Ashley is crazy!' They're just stalkers with cameras. I just block it out of my life. I'm a very positive person, so I don't really read that stuff. It's not a normal thing to have to go through. I don't find myself that interesting." On her future: "I know I'll always have to work hard, and I'm OK with that. With people I grew up with in the business, a lot of it did come easy for them. It was like they just landed into something. But with me, it's always been a difficult road, I've always had to work hard for it. But I don't think I'd have it any other way."

Ashley Tisdale talks new album, 'Guilty Pleasure' The most important thing to remember going into Ashley Tisdale’s sophomore album, Guilty Pleasure, is that the High School Musical star is actually a whopping 23 years old. “Hey, it isn’t bad that I look young,” she laughs. “I’ve got good genes, I gotta say.” With an exclusive track now available on iTunes — “Overrated” marks the first of three songs to be released digitally before the July 28th album debut — she’s also hoping she has a good chance at leaving the Disney playpen behind and striking out as a grown-up pop star. “I think this album has a sense of very strong survival in every song, and that’s something I’m attracted to,” says Tisdale. “I’m a strong person. I’m also very sassy and a little bit angsty sometimes. I try to show a different side of me that people haven’t seen. I think people really see me as Sharpay, from High School Musical, which is great — but there is a different side of Ashley, and that’s really coming across on the album. I am growing up. That’s what I feel the album is really about. I’m not young anymore. I’m 23 turning 24, and it’s a reflection of where I am in my life right now.” Tisdale says she was involved in every aspect of the album’s production, from its guitar-driven, slightly industrial sound (Lady GaGa is an inspiration) to much of the writing process. “I definitely want an album I would listen to,” she says. Her favorite track, “What If,” was a collaboration with American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, who Tisdale calls “a talented person who knows what she’s doing.” “‘What If’ was the last song I recorded, and I just feel like it’s the most personal. It makes me very vulnerable, I think, for everybody to hear it. I don’t want to talk specifics, but the song is about when you’re in a relationship, and you get into arguments, you’re always willing to try and save the relationship. You’re willing to work things out — but the other person is always willing to walk away. So at the end of the day, without all those games, if I needed you, would you be there for me?” Tisdale’s busy summer will continue on the acting front with the July 31 release of supernatural family action pic Aliens in the Attic. But alas, despite the fact that production has started on HSM 4, she insists she and her castmates from the first three films will have no involvement. “We don’t have anything to do with it,” she says, laughing off a suggestion that the old pack put in a background cameo for kicks. “I think it would be really weird without the main cast,” she says. “I don’t know if I could do it. We’ve graduated. It was such a great experience, but I think we’re all kind of doing our own things, and we’re all moving on.” That moving on, Tisdale knows, is her biggest challenge at the moment. While she says she’s “very grateful” for her time in the Disney system, “it’s always hard to make that transition in your career [into more mature subject matter]. That’s where I am right now. There’s no rule book to do it, so you just have to go through it, and follow your instincts and your gut. This is all I want to do, and hopefully it’ll go really well. “I hope to inspire people, influence people,” she says. “I’m living out my dreams and I love what I do. I’m also very normal — I went to a regular school, I worked in clothing stores, so I just really want to inspire people and say, like, anything can happen. Just keep going. I never knew I’d be doing an album someday. Luckily, High School Musical opened all those doors for us, and I’m really lucky and blessed for that.”

Ashley Tisdale: Kissing Zac Efron is 'Weird and Awkward'... But Not Disgusting With her kids' movie ''Aliens in the Attic' in wide release this weekend and a brand-new, edgier-than-ever album in stores now, actress/singer Ashley Tisdale is straddling two worlds - and she's perfectly comfortable doing it. PopEater spoke exclusively to the star about letting her career mature while embracing the existing 'High School Musical' audience - and whether kissing Zac Efron was as disgusting as she claimed. The two halves of your career looks fairly different right now. Your new album 'Guilty Pleasure' sounds more grown-up than anything you've done, and 'Aliens in the Attic' is unmistakably a kid-flick. Are you just doing your own thing? "I'm doing my thing. I wanted to make an album that I was listen to. I'm 24, so I wanted to make something my friends would enjoy. I feel that it's two separate things, too - with music, you can get away with a lot more. When I was younger, I would listen to Britney Spears' 'Hit Me Baby (One More Time),' when I was 11 or 10, and I had no idea what she was talking about. But I liked it - the music was great, the beat was awesome. Kids don't really read into the lyrics much at a young age. I'm not putting myself out there visually in my album in a way that makes you scared of your kids listening to it. Movie-wise, that movie was done right before 'High School Musical 3.' At the time, it was the perfect movie to do, because it's a big family movie. It reminds me of a mix between 'Goonies' and 'Home Alone,' two movies I loved when I was young. We had such an amazing cast. Still, I'm looking at other roles that are a little bit more mature, but I'm not trying to run away from my audience... I want to build more into teen movies, obviously, not just tween things." In a recent interview, you said that kissing Zac Efron for an episode of 'The Suite Life' on Disney was "disgusting." Really? Disgusting? "I think disgusting was such a bad word for that; it sounds so dramatic. I was exhausted and it was my last interview before lunch. I'm like - 'Okay, it was not disgusting.' It was just weird and awkward. If I was like, 'Oh yeah, I like it,' I don't think Vanessa [Hudgens] would like that very much. Our relationship, it was different from the start. He's a lot younger than me, and he looked even younger when I met him. He was 16, I think, and I was 19. That's a big difference at that age. Now, he looks older than me. He looks definitely good, for sure, but ... you always remember when you were young, and how you first met. We're always there for each other. Sometimes you meet guys that you know you want to be friends with, but then - maybe in the future. With me and him, we've always been really good friends, and it's even better that he's dating my best friend." Is dating a challenge for you, given that your world is one where paparazzi hang out in trees for hours, just waiting to snap a picture of you? "Not really. I don't date just to date - I have to really like someone in order to date them. I just don't go for actors. I like kind of having somebody that's in a different side of the business. I like to be with someone who's creative and talented, but I tend to go for somebody who's doing something I'm not doing. Then we have different things to talk about." Do you ever have those petty moments where you look back people who might not have been the nicest in high school and enjoy that you made it big - and they didn't? "I really don't. I think I'm very grounded. I think I'm someone who's always very grateful for everything that's come my way. I've had to work very hard for it. I haven't just landed here and it just happened. I did have to deal with people in school who didn't ever think I would do something with [acting], or they would joke around and write in my yearbook, 'Oh, see you at the Oscars,' or 'Put my name in your speech' - just being sarcastic, but I never thrive on negativity. I'm a positive person, I always look ahead. And I'm not a bragging person either. I think I'm very grateful. I'm very normal, I guess."
