Mendes Told Krasinski To Turn Down The Office

Sam Mendes tried to convince John Krasinski to turn down his role on the U.S. version of The Office - because he didn't think the actor could carry of comedy.

The filmmaker, who first met Krasinski while filming 2005's Jarhead, cast the actor as the lead in his upcoming movie Away We Go.

But when Mendes heard he was considering taking the part of Jim Halpert in the award-winning adaptation of the hit British series, he advised him not to take the part - as he wasn't convinced of the star's comedic talents.

He says, "I don't think of John as a comedian partly because he's really not funny at all! When I met John he was playing a small part in Jarhead and there weren't that many funny lines.

"When John told me (he) had been offered the U.S. remake of The Office I said, 'That's a disaster. That's a travesty,' and I told him not to do it, but I was completely wrong. At that time it was following an almost perfect piece of television which was the original U.K. series."

Wow. I didn't realize Mendes told him not to do it!

Which is totally cruel, because he is PERFECT for the role of Jim. Thanks for that find Karen.

I'm so glad John hasn't listened to Mendes' advices

I can't see anyone more perfect for the part. John as Jim = perfection

Me either on both counts Cris (videos and Jim). I just can't fathom why he didnt' see it. I mean, the faces John pulls, I have a pretty big feeling that if John wasn't in The Office I woldn't watch it. I may have tried to watch but I mainly started for Jim and Pam.

And I totally agree with you guys. I just can't see anyone else being Jim. I started watching for Jim & Pam as well, and of course Dwight. But I just probably wouldn't watch it otherwise.

Hey, this is totally random and all, but did you guys know that he smokes? I had no idea that he did until my friend sent me something.

I was a little shocked when I first discovered that he smoked, because it appears that he makes such a conscious effort to hide it (never been photographed with one in the past.) Then the other part of me is glad he has a fault, because the man is a little too perfect.

I've read something about him smoking on Twitter, I think. Well, not good for him, but like you girls said, he had to have something, right?
