Pushing Daisies Rewatch ~ Season 2

We've all talked about starting up this rewatch over the last few weeks, and I hope everyone is ready to pull out their DVDs and start the series over as we wait for the final three episodes.

We'll probably just use this one thread, but start a new episode each week.

First up:

No time to go do this right now, so here's my thoughts from last time...

Right from the beginning, looking at it, I could feel it was something special and unique, not like some shows that are just cookie cutter versions of one another. And sometimes the use of narration feels forced, but in the case of PD, it's very much part of the experience and what gives it another layer of charm. We must bow down to the genius behind the microphone there

And the cast! Obviously I was much more familiar with some of them than the others.

Cheno, well as I've said I sort of followed her since Annie. Got to see so much of who she was in these little moments here and there. And gotta love the PJs

And Chi, even before having come off The Nine, I knew him of other things and I hope one day we can see that big ol' smile of his 'cause it's something! He gives such a great performance as Emerson, makes us love him no matter how cranky he gets

And Leeee! My poor Wonderfalls... I still haven't watched it again yet but I so want to now You so felt for him the whole way, and saw how much having Chuck in his life did brighten things up. I mean if you look at the episode before and after Chuck is made alive again...

Then you have Anna, who I'd only seen in Goal at this point, without knowing who she was of course but once I'd heard it was her it was such a thrill revelation She's really quite something in here, and you could see so much of how Chuck has wanted to live, and now she's getting her chance so she's not letting it go by

And oh golly the aunts... (although now we know that term doesn't quite say things right ) Swoosie I knew through the years here and there, and Ellen only from one episode of Heroes but still OMG!

I have so much love for the aunt-and-mother () and though we don't get to see them much what we do see is so great Here we only got a brief glimpse, a hint of who each of them were... But still so fun!

The Pie-lette is easily one of the best hours of tv ever made. Everything is explained in such a fun way, there isn’t a scene that I don’t like.
I like what they do with the dialogues and the narration, when a character repeats something, like for example:

Emerson: Hey, docile as a kitten, says the family.
Leo Gaswint: No, no, Cantaloupe’s docile as a kitten. It’s that Rottweiler...

Or when the Narrator refers to something he’s said earlier:

“Only Prince Charming could know how the Piemaker felt upon looking at her.”

And then:

“Only Sleeping Beauty could know how she felt at this moment.”

Look at the colors:

I especially love the music in these scenes:

I love this sequence:

After his mother’s death, Ned avoided social attachments, fearing what he’d do if someone else he loved died. And he became obsessed with pies.
It’s 19 years, 34 weeks, 1 day and 59 minutes later, heretofore known as "Now." Young Ned has become The Piemaker. And this is where he makes his pies.

I noticed that Emerson’s clothes used to be a lot more toned down...

I love this scene too:

And then came the event that changed everything.
The Piemaker listened intently to the news, unaware that he stopped breathing. He was haunted by the name of this woman who met her end on the high seas. But he didn’t know why.

I find this next scene really amusing. I don’t know how to describe it, but they’re both so nonchalant about it

I love the scene when he brings her back to life, even if Anna doesn’t

Chuck kicking her killer

“I hate to be a bad host, but I’m sort of exhausted from chasing your coffin”

“How about we solve my murder and collect the reward? Wouldn’t that be poetic? Certainly an anecdote.” I could just imagine her talking to someone and saying “hey, did I ever tell about the time I solved my murder?”

The scene in the car:

Ned: “You can’t, you can have your pie but you can’t eat it, that’s the way it works.”
Emerson: “You’re making me hungry!”

And then the first of the by-proxy adorable things: by-proxy hug!

Vivian: “Well, at least she had the good sense not to fly: airplanes fall out of the sky every day!”
Lily stares at her.

This one is so awkward and funny:

“The Pie Maker did his best to comfort Vivian. In a rare moment of sensitivity, he reached out and touched her... Not realizing she didn’t like being touched.”

Another favorite scene:

The jig appeared to be up: Aunt Lily was looking directly at her niece, her niece who wasn’t supposed to be alive. And if she possessed two good eyes, she would’ve seen her.
A rush of warmth washed over The Pie Maker: he would later describe this feeling as delight. The girl whom he rescued from death had returned the favor.

One thing I always found weird is that the Narrator says Ned was 9 when his mom died, but then Ned says to Emerson “I kinda killed her dad when I was 10”. Why the difference?

Notice that Ned is actually capable of lying without his eye twitching:

The Piemaker wanted to tell Chuck about that fateful afternoon when he inadvertently killed her father, but instead, he said...
No.

And, of course, Ned&Chuck. They’re love personified:

As he stared at her, he reached around and held his own hand, pretending he was holding hers. And at that very moment, she was pretending to be holding his.

I only knew Chi, Cheno and Swoosie, I'm afraid. Funny thing is, I did watch Wonderfalls, but I wasn't an avid fan so I didn't recognized Lee. Then when I found out, all I could remember about him on the show was that: he played the brother, and he was really tall .

So, how do you guys think Ned got his power?

I have this cheesy theory about it that it was his love for Digby that sort of created the power. He loved his dog so much that he couldn't bear the thought of losing his best friend, so the power came to be, and then after that he just couldn't stop it anymore .

I wanna hear your theories .

Strawberrypie, what a recap I loved reading your post The pilot was amazing!

This quote always just gets me really excited. I can perfectly hear Alan Dale and it's all so unique to PD. That sequence was when I said to myself that this show is so different... but I love it already.

I actually only knew of Kristin from Wicked. The rest of the cast I fell in love with from PD alone

I like that theory about Ned's power. I just always assumed that it was just a natural gift that Ned always had, not that something triggered it's existence, but now i really like that concept.

I'm gonna rewatch this weekend, but reading the recaps just brings back the flutter in my stomach when I watched the first episode.

What initially got me started watching was Alan Dale...what a voice on that guy. But, as I watched the first episode, I just fell in love with all the characters.

I like that theory on how Ned got his "powers". Nothing is more stronger than love.

From the Pilot or Pie-lette, I knew I was going to love this show. It was odd, quirky, colorful, funny and so different. I loved it and I loved all the characters almost immediately. I didn't care how they were going to keep up the concept too, b/c the characters were enough to keep me watching.

Favorites from this episode:
- Ned and Emerson's straight-faced, yet hilarious conversations together at the Piehole and then on the bus to Chuck's funeral
- Chuck and Ned, these two were instantly likeable and adorable: their hand-holding at the end, their conversation at the Piehole, their wall-touching...everything!
- the Aunts, awesomely awkward and odd.

And about Ned's powers: I always thought it was just something he was born with and we were just supposed to accept it as is. But I really like the Digby theory.

I used to think that too, but then I thought, had he never touched a dead thing before? Not even a dead plant or leaves? Had he never ate meat? I just find the Digby hipotesis -LOL- very sweet and since the world show is over, I guess we'll never get a definitive answer on that *sigh*

After 5 mins of watching this show I knew it would become a favourite of mine. I love the storytelling of Ned's life through the narrator. The bright colours and wonderful characters. The combination of personalities especially that of Ned/Emerson. Everything about this show is new and fresh.

I loved the banter with Emerson and Ned in the Pie Hole. I have a thing for bantering, and as soon as that started it was

And the N/C touch across the wall always gets me choked up

Gah. Thanks for pointing that out. Alan Dale is on Lost, I think.

It's been a week, so onto the next episode...
