Allusions and references to Pop culture in Pushing Daisies
Just a thread where you can talk about all the different references to other movies/tv shows/etc. I know there are a lot that people don't spot and it's always interesting to find new ones. to kind of see some new 'background jokes' you might have missed.
Here's one: The Wizard of Oz-In Circus Circus, in the morgue with all the clowns, just before Ned touches Jacky Johnny, it shows a clowns legs. The clown is wearing striped black and white socks with red jeweled shoes. __________________

This may not be a reference, but it is a visual similarity to Little Shop of Horrors

Wow, that's great
Here are all the references that I can remember in The Legend of Merle McQuoddy from the movie Pete's Dragon: The name McQuoddy is a reference to the town's name, Passamaquoddy, from the movie. Both have a lighthouse keeper named Nora. Both Nora's lost a guy in a storm (husband in Pushing Daisies and fiancé in Pete's Dragon) The kid's name is named Elliot, as is the dragon in the movie. Merle is the name of Nora's husband in this show, and is the name of Pete's abusive, adoptive father in the movie. Candle On the Water sung in both (by Olive and other guys in this and by Nora (Helen Reddy) in the movie) The murder weapon was a harpoon gun, which is what the evil doctor (played by Daisies' narrator, Jim Dale) was planning to use to kill the dragon. Merle McQuoddy hid in sea caves, which is where the dragon Elliot also hid in the movie. Some characters in both shows wore yellow raincoats |

Oh! And Vivian's drawing of Dwight Dixon was almost identical to the picture in Titanic.

Okay, you're gonna have to be more specific with that one 'cause the only Hitchcock movie I've ever seen was Psycho and that was a few years ago, so I don't remember it very clearly

I haven't seen any actually . But I know that the sequence with Dilly Balsam in a boat being attacked by seagulls is a reference to The Birds (basically birds go crazy and attack everyone). And Emerson's dream in Bitches was a reference to Vertigo (don't know more than that, sorry).
There might have been other Hitchcock references, I'm not sure . __________________

I am really enjoying this thread. There are a lot of references that I did not see myself!
There's another episode that reminded me about Hitchcock's Vertigo- Bad Habits' bell tower scene reminded me of the bell tower that Jimmy Stewart was afraid to climb and keep the leading lady from jumping off the tower. |
