Alex O'Loughlin, Holly Valance holiday in Mexico

AUSSIE actor Alex O'Loughlin dealt with the news that he was out of a job in the best possible way - he went on holiday to Mexico with his glamorous girlfriend, Holly Valance.

The pair left Los Angeles on Thursday for a two-week getaway, following the axing of O'Loughlin's US vampire show, Moonlight.

Issues behind the scenes and flagging ratings were cited as possible reasons for the decision, however O'Loughlin's agent, Nathan Morris, of June Cann Management, is confident O'Loughlin will not be unemployed for long.

"He has got a whole raft of things to read through - a role like this has definitely opened plenty of doors," Morris said.

"The key is to strike while the iron is hot."

Plot
S. Darko takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko’s younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey (Evigan) set off on a road trip to Hollywood in a bid to ‘make it big’, but their journey is cut short when their car breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded in a small desert town. When a meteorite happens to crash-land nearby, Samantha is plagued by bizarre visions telling of the universe’s end and it appears that their breakdown was part of some grander plan. She must face her own demons and, in doing so, save the world and herself.

Production
The project was announced to the public on May 9, 2008. Daveigh Chase will reprise her role from the original, now the titular character. Briana Evigan (Step Up) will play her best friend Corey Richardson and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) will play a character named Randy Holt. Also joining the cast are Justin Chatwin (The Chumscrubber), and Alex O’Loughlin (August Rush), though it is currently unknown who they will play.

Donnie Darko director and writer Richard Kelly is not involved with the film in any capacity, but when asked about his taking over the helm of the film series, the sequel’s director Fisher stated: “I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly’s film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality.” It will be written by Nathan Atkins (Point of Entry).
Fox has already bought the North American distribution rights.

Shooting begins May 18, 2008.

According to Screen Daily, Chris Fischer (Nightstalker, Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders) will direct the sequel, to be called S. Darko.

Richard Kelly, writer-director of the original, will apparently not be involved, although Fisher said in a statement, “I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly’s film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality.”
