You're right. At that point in the series Jackie would not have believed Hyde. They did not have the close relationship yet.

Jackie didn't want to believe it, so she was more apt to make up a story about the messenger so that she could believe that person was lying -- rather believe the truth about Kelso. People will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to protect themselves from unpleasant realities.

Regardless, Donna, Hyde, Eric, and Fez should've all told Jackie the truth, despite how she might've reacted. Good friends will risk their friends' anger to help them. In other words, good friends will prioritize the friend's well-being over the well-being of the friendship.

I wish they all would have told Jackie the truth. She needed to know no matter how much it hurt.

If they had, the show would've had to find other ways to find humor during that arc. I wonder if Donna would've stood in solidarity with Jackie and tried to get Eric to ban Kelso from the basement (something I bring up quite often). If so, would Eric, Fez, and Hyde be on-board or think that's going "too far" since -- likely according to Eric and Hyde -- Jackie isn't really part of the group.

Fez might be on Jackie's side just because he wants to date her himself, not out of any true sense of justice.

Hyde's attitude toward Jackie shifted late in season 2, so if she were told from the get-go about Kelso at the start of season 2, he might still see her as "the enemy".

This is another One Difference fanfic scenario.

It was nice seeing how their attitudes towards each other changed as time went on.

Once Hyde spent time with a Jackie who wasn't dating Kelso, non-antagonistic time, he got to experience more of who she truly is. He created a version of her in his head based on his less pleasant interactions with her while she dated Kelso, and -- granted -- she did not show him the best part of her personality during much of season one. But people do grow and change, and she did pretty swiftly.

Jackie did show a lot of growth during the show, so did Hyde. A lot of it came when they were together.

When they were together romantically and when they weren't. That's one of the main things that makes their dynamic so interesting.

Right! Even before they were a couple they were helping each other grow.

Hyde's character got an overhaul, imo, starting in "Prom Night," thanks to his interactions/dynamic with Jackie. I'm glad the showrunners and/or the writers recognized that and kept building on it during seasons 2-5, and seasons 5-7.

I am glad they had Jackie help him grow. It led for a much better relationship for them.

And we get some really satisfying material between them (and some less-than-satisfying material, unfortunately). So much more could've been done with them (and other characters, but that's for other threads).

We did get a lot of good moments between them, and some that were not so great. Some of their background moments were the best.
