Eric's Diary Entry: #5

Eric gets on the bus.

Since my dad took away the Vista Cruiser, I’ve had to ride to school with Hyde. School starts at 7:30 in the morning, but that’s never been an issue for Hyde. His philosophy is I get there when I get there. That’s fine for him since he has a study hall first period, but I have chemistry, and I keep missing the first half of it. Attending fifty-percent of a class left me with fifty-percent of a grade, and that prompted Mrs. Walsh, my chemistry teacher, to call home.

I heard Red on the phone saying, "Don’t worry; he’ll be there on time from now on..." Then he turned and glared at me as only Red can, "... because he’ll be riding the bus." He hung up the phone and continued the glare. If he were a super hero, he’d have burned a hole right through my skull with that glare (which, in theory, would be cool but only if it weren’t directed at me).

"I’m not riding the school bus. I’m a senior."

"You’re a senior who’s failing chemistry, and you’ll be on that bus everyday if I have to wait at the stop and put you on it!"

For seniors all across America, the school bus is the unhappiest place on earth. And that was no less true for me in my little Wisconsin town. I’m the last stop on the route, so my seat choice was very limited. I could sit next to Jimmy Vesalis, who has to breathe through his mouth and sounds just like Darth Vader (which, again, in theory is cool but not when he’s sitting right next to you). Plus, he has a runny nose, and as evil as Darth Vader is, he never wiped his nose on his sleeve (or cape). My other choice was this kid who’s the only freshman on the varsity wrestling team. He’s always red and sweaty, even when he’s just sitting still. It was a tough choice, but I went with sweat. I can handle that a lot more easily than snot.

Eric's Diary Entry: #6

Eric’s puzzled by Red.

Since my dad and I are stuck at home together this summer, and my mom wants my dad to do only relaxing, non-stressful activities, I got us a giant jigsaw puzzle of the Rocky Mountains. It’s a very beautiful, serene picture of a lake with the Rocky Mountains rising up in the background and blue sky all around. Plus, I thought it would remind my dad of a trip he took to the Rockies when he was in the Boy Scouts.

I set up the puzzle on a card table in the den so we’d be out of Mom’s way when she’s cooking and having menopausal freak-outs and out of Laurie’s way when she’s watching her twelve hours of TV a day since she still has no job. My mom was thrilled. She wanted us to glue it down to a piece of cardboard as we went so that she could frame it and hang it on the wall as a memento of our special father/son friendship. (I just hoped she wouldn’t insist on hanging it my room.)

I laid out all the pieces and showed it to my dad, even got him a pillow for his chair -- ready for our relaxing father/son bonding activity. The first thing he said when he saw it was, “How the hell are we going to figure out all that blue?! The blue in the sky is the exact same shade as the blue in the lake. And forget about those mountains -- that’s two square feet of pure brown. And could you have found a puzzle with smaller pieces? I’ll go blind doing this thing.”

So I said, “Okay, but doesn’t it at least remind you of your boyhood trip to the Rockies?”
“That was the worst trip of my life! I had to have seven ticks removed from my head before they could send me home with a life-threatening case of poison sumac. I had more fun in my foxhole in Korea.”

I think the most relaxing thing my dad and I can do together this summer is watch Fantasy Island. He never stops laughing at Tattoo. I told him I was surprised he didn’t like The Love Boat more since a bald man was in charge. He didn’t think that was funny, and now he won’t stop calling me Gopher.
