If he asked all his friends and family to give him tough love for a week, he might be so frightened by it -- and relieved Red's the only one who consistently treats him that way -- that he does grow up a bit. If only to avoid having an experience like that again.

I think Eric had some moments of maturity on the show, but he had a lot of growing to do. Like all of them did.
