Comments: Eric and Donna do have some similar shirts, and this comic is a play on that.

Colleen, Lulu, thank you!

Comment: Today’s comic (and the mini-arc it starts) foreshadows and sets up the dynamic in “The Girl I Love” (5x11), which tells us that Jackie has been demanding Hyde do things for her / with her instead of asking him. It also shows us an instance of this habit of hers, but Hyde’s reaction establishes that Jackie’s behavior toward him isn’t new.

I wanted to depict an earlier instance of it so that this dynamic doesn’t seem to come out of nowhere in “The Girl I Love” -- and so Hyde’s refusal to go to Mrs. Forman’s couples party doesn’t come across as selfish,”bad boyfriend” move but an understandable and even necessary boundary he’s putting up in his relationship with Jackie..

Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas”

Comments: In “The Crunge” (5x10), Jackie visits her dad in prison, and Hyde asks, “How was it?” Jackie claims in a later episode that Hyde never asks about her dad -- which doesn’t fit his character, and I don’t buy it. We also never learn about her dad’s sentencing. Just that he’s charged with bribery and arrested for it.

In “Misty Mountain Hop” (5x12), Jackie expects Hyde to be see through her lies telepathically to the truth. She doesn’t want to have to ask him to help her empty out her family’s ski cabin. She wants him to “just know” she needs his help and why. She’s likely afraid of him rejecting her call for help, along with feeling humiliated at her family’s situation.

Today’s comic seeks to bring all the above elements together and fill in what’s missing character-wise, plot-wise, and information-wise so that Jackie and Hyde’s overarching storyline in season 5 makes more narrative sense.

Comments: This comic has the first reference to (and acknowledgment of) Point Place’s strange flow of time.

It also shows Hyde’s frustration at Jackie’s lack of communication. Hyde is only eighteen and has plenty to learn himself about being in a relationship. This is his first truly romantic one. His others were sexual flings.

His emotional wounding, emotional immaturity, and a certain lack of self-awareness are front and center in certain episode of season 5 -- but in Those ‘70s Comics, these are issues that create major character arcs for him and Jackie to work through. They’re not dealt with in a relatively perfunctory manner so that Hyde’s character doesn’t truly change (in fact, he gets worse as the show continues). When he learns something about himself or others in the comics, it sticks.
