Classic Comics Saturday: hippie:
--- Those ’70s Comics: 766 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: Jackie has realized that accepting gifts from Kelso hurts Hyde, and she’s also been experiencing the consequences of that: Hyde’s emotional withdrawal from her. He’s trying to protect himself from getting hurt / being abandoned by the girl he loves, and Jackie is now doing the same (by the boy she loves) by rejecting Kelso’s latest present. --- Star Vector Brush Set PS7 --- Quote:

Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 767 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: We rarely see Donna dole out relationship advice to Jackie on the show when she dates Hyde, mostly that -- once Donna is team Jackie-and-Hyde -- that Jackie should choose Hyde over Kelso. When Donna does give Jackie Hyde!relationship advice, it’s usually perfunctory, unlike the advice Jackie gives Donna for at least the first four seasons of the show about Eric, Casey, and dating in general. Today’s comic changes this fact. Donna does have wisdom to share. She does so when Jackie dates Kelso and when Jackie pursues Hyde in season 3. The problem isn’t Donna; it’s how the writing shifted during the run of the show. Now Jackie needs an outside perspective / reality check again, and Donna gives an extensive one to her. --- Quote:

Classic Comics Saturday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 768 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: While “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” isn’t the first original story or episode I wrote for the comics, it is -- I believe -- the first full-length original story (or episode) I wrote for them. It’s inspired by the in-between-episode moments or events we hear of, often in a tossed-off sentence, that lead to the major conflicts among and character arcs for Jackie, Hyde, and Kelso. In last Sunday’s classic comic, Fez hid in Donna’s closet because he was bored. That let him overhear a private conversation with Jackie and Donna. He reports the intel to Kelso for gossiping-to-a-friend-about-other-friends reasons. Nothing nefarious but definitely naive. He trusts Kelso too much (for now). __________________

Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 769 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: As “dumb” as Kelso seems or acts on the show, his true dearth of intelligence is in the realm of common sense and self-awareness. He managed to cheat on Jackie for months with Laurie and at least one other girl without getting caught, despite Hyde trying to trip him up. Granted, Jackie’s own naivety (and need to believe Kelso was faithful) played a role in Kelso getting away with it so long. But Kelso can be very sneaky. Besides his chronic cheating, he’s able to steal his friends’ toys (and panties) without them realizing it. He gives Jackie that sweater in “Whole Lotta Love” (5x16) as a calculated manipulation. He invites Annette to Point Place as another calculated manipulation. Without the comedic skill of his on-screen portrayer, on paper Kelso is -- with rare exception, particularly with Brooke in season 6 and Fez in the later seasons -- an unlikable antagonist. In “A Jacke Burkharrt Christmas,” we see Kelso’s machinations at work. Without a laugh track or a talented actor, the character’s behavior is stripped of humor and laid bare. __________________
