Episode 506.5 - “That ‘70s Halloween”

Comments: Jackie and Hyde were robbed of a Halloween episode while they were a couple, so I gave them one in Those ‘70s Comics.

The last two panels play on Fez’s foreignness, copying the show’s humor about it. The more critical analysis I read and wrote about the show, however, the more I realized copying the show’s humor about a variety of subjects wasn’t the best path.

The show too often wrote Fez’s character like the omega wolf in a wolf pack. As I got closer to the end of season 5 in the comics, I began to write Fez as a more fully-realized character. I gave him back the insight he displays in season 1 of the show and his generally loving nature from earlier in the series. In the comics’ version of season 6; he gets significant story arcs. He speaks out against his treatment as “the other,” with Laurie’s support, and he finally gets the respect he deserves from his friends and Red. He’s no longer a punchline but an equal.

Comments: We never got to see – or even hear about – Hyde interacting with Jackie’s father. Their relationship existed in a strange kind of vacuum, separated from her family (before her dad went to prison, and her mom abandoned her). In the comics, I explored the dynamic between Hyde and Jackie’s dad, as well as among Hyde, Jackie, and Jackie’s dad.

Announcement: From now on, I'll be posting six less new Those '70s Comics a month (from twenty to fourteen). In the last almost ten years, both the writing and the art have evolved so much that making the comics takes a lot more time than they did when I first started. That's left me a lot less time to write T7S fic.

Once I hit season 6 of the show, more gaps in the writing existed than character development. I ended up writing more purely original material than just riffing off and altering the given plot in an episode.

Art-wise over the years, all the characters have gotten arms ( ), different angles (e.g., full profile), and I often draw many different outfits for each character per episode, in different poses. I also generally give much more care to the art than I did when I first started.

I'd originally planned to stop making Those '70s Comics at season 6 then write and draw an original episode to tie the series up. I might still do that. I’ve made comics through “The Seeker” (6x25), enough for much of 2020. Or I might keep the new schedule and make season-7 episodes. Or, a third option, I might reduce further the number of new comics I put out a month if I decide to go forth with (some of) season 7.

So the new schedule will be as follows: weeks A and C in a month will have new comics from Monday-Thursday. Weeks B and D will have new comics Tuesday-Thursday with a T7S Collectors Stamp posted on Monday instead. Classic Comics will continue to be posted on the weekends.

If time allows, I hope to write T7S ficlets based on prompts people have given me on tumblr. I'd post those on Fridays and put the link to them here on Fridays, as well. The goal is still to provide content every day of the week, but -- again -- that depends on whether time allows.

Comments: Fez tailored Jackie’s dress for the Miss Dairy Queen pageant on the show, and Jackie’s using his talents again for her parents’ Halloween party. Fez, of course, hasn’t yet evolved his understanding of boundaries. Jackie’s reaction at the end of the comic can be interpreted as her looking at us, the reader, for sympathy for or understanding of what she has to put up with at times.

Dasha, thank you! Laurie was used as an antagonist on the show, and she never got the full character-development arc in season 6 that began in season 5. I think/hope that had LRK stayed in the role that she and Fez would've actually fallen in love in season 6 instead of Laurie being regressed to a simplistic version of her earlier self. I wanted to make her a more rounded character in the comics and illustrate her new understanding of herself and her motivations for her previous bad behavior.

Comments: had fun deciding what costumes Red, Kitty, Joanne, and Bob would wear. I also enjoyed writing a Halloween episode for the comics’ version of season 5.

Kitty’s menopause has Red, Joanne, and Bob all on edge. The show treated Kitty’s hormone change cartoonishly, with rare exception, and that fits perfectly with the comics’ humor. Nowadays, though, I probably would’ve mixed in a few more serious or tender moments about it between Kitty and various characters.
