Classic Comics Saturday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 549 Inspired by episode 503 - “What Is and What Should Never Be” --- Comments: Another comic where I fit in some meta commentary. Eric’s horniness is also on display. He changes and uses Kitty’s wine jug metaphor to put himself down and claim a woman he considers hot would have to be really drunk to find him attractive. In hindsight, I should’ve had Donna react to that. --- Colleen, thank you so much! __________________

Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 550 Inspired by episode 503 - “What Is and What Should Never Be” --- Comments: Hyde tells Kelso what I think he should have – and would have – told him if he were written completely in-character during this scene. The show’s POV or concern during early season 5 seems to be how betrayed Kelso would feel by Jackie and Hyde dating. We see this through Eric and Donna’s attitude and even how Hyde acts in this episode. But that POV is very narrow and ignores the fact Kelso ran off on Jackie and cheated on her in California before he receives her break-up letter. Yes, at the end of this episode, Jackie calls him on the first part, but Kelso’s hypocrisy needed to be called out. I understand why Kelso wouldn’t be happy his ex-girlfriend and one of his best friends were dating. He loses the right to be righteously indignant about it, however, through his horrible treatment of Jackie throughout their romantic relationship (before and after “Kiss of Death” [2x20]). His treatment of her after both their major breakups is relatively reprehensible, as well. Even though he’s the one who cheated, he lets/encourages the woman he cheated with to do his dirty work for him: punish Jackie for not taking him back. Once Jackie finds happiness with Hyde, Kelso does whatever he can to deprive her of that happiness because his ego’s bruised. He sees Jackie’s choice of Hyde as a personal attack on his hotness and ability as a lover. He’s afraid their friends and, likely, the wider world – and other potential lovers – will believe Kelso is so “lame in the sack,” so ugly, so worthless that he couldn’t hold onto his girlfriend, and he blames Hyde for that. Further, he probably expected Jackie to accept his cheating (finally) because she’s so desperate to keep him as her boyfriend. So when she moves on, it’s a shock to his narcissistic, self-entitled mind. I explore the above interpretation of Kelso in my story One Difference: Jackie and Hyde Don’t Kiss (Over the Summer) [FFNet / AO3]. --- Colleen, thank you! __________________
