On the show, Eric accepts Hyde’s explanation: “She’s hot.” But that easy acceptance is OOC, in my opinion, and dumbs him down. Eric knows Hyde -- truly knows him. He’d remember Hyde’s numerous rejections of Jackie when she previously pursued him romantically and Hyde’s general, negative attitude toward her. But he’d also weigh that against Hyde going to jail for Jackie and, just as significantly, maintaining (through omission) that the pot was his. Which led to Red kicking Hyde out of the house and Hyde, ultimately, becoming homeless. Further, Eric would not be ignorant of the events of “Jackie Bags Hyde” (3x08). Hyde both protected Jackie from a potential date rape scenario and defended her honor. Then he asked her on a “freakin’ date”. For Eric to accept without question, “What can I do? She’s hot,” as Hyde’s motivation for dating Jackie, of all people, does a disservice to Eric’s character and deprives us of a much richer, more satisfying exploration of his friendship with Hyde. --- Matt, that's also incredibly sweet! :blush: :blush: :blush: Colleen, Jackie's having a moment ... :look: |

--- Those ’70s Comics: 545 Inspired by episode 503 - “What Is and What Should Never Be” https://i.postimg.cc/wvky6vPV/545interference.jpg --- 3D Tentacles --- Comments: The structure of this scene is similar to the show’s version, but I changed the dialogue to reflect the comics’ particulars (e.g., Hyde hiccuping a rainbow). Also, Kelso’s last bit of dialogue in the comic highlights how the show’s writers often defined girls and women (through how other characters spoke about them), regardless of whether they were sexually active or not. Laurie is called a whore and sl** by Eric, Hyde, Donna, and Jackie for enjoying sex (see my meta: Laurie Forman and Being Sl**-Shamed: Enjoying Sex Is Not Her Shameful Behavior for further discussion). Fez calls Jill, Hyde’s girlfriend in “The Third Wheel” (4x11), a whore because she won’t “put out”. In “Red Fired Up” (2x24) Fez calls Jackie a “tiny little whore” in solidarity to Kelso – who’s talking badly about her because she hasn’t forgiven him for cheating on her – when Jackie was the monogamous one in that relationship. Kelso calling Annette “that skanky non-skank” in today’s comic points out just how illogical that point of view is. --- Colleen, thank you! :D |
