The Lazy American Hero & His Little Buddy (Hyde and Fez) #1: Because Hyde Gave Fez His Protection and Became His Best Friend

This thread is dedicated to the friendship between Steven Hyde and Fez.

Hyde offers Fez his protection when they first meet, and he ends up taking
Fez under his wing and teaching him about American culture.

FEZ:
I’m nervous!

HYDE:
Don’t be nervous. You’ll get sweaty.

FEZ:
Oh, no -- too late! I can’t help it.
This is my first official American date!

HYDE:
That’s why I’m here, Fez. To help you out, man--
unless they’re uggos, and then I’m gone.

FEZ:
There they are! And they’re not even uggos!

HYDE:
Oh, they’re hot! The blonde is blonde ... and hot!

FEZ:
Yes, and since I set us up on this date, she’s mine, right?

HYDE:
Well, I can see why you’d think that. But, actually, since I came along
to help you out, American custom dictates that I get the blonde.

FEZ:
Once again, the local custom bones the foreign guy.

HYDE:
America, man! Love it or leave it.

Fez doesn't always get Hyde's humor, and Hyde doesn't agree with Fez's idea of fun.

FEZ:
Why don't we have a game?

HYDE:
Would you stop asking me why don't we have stuff?
"Why don't we have a song?" "Why don't we have
a movie?" We're men.

FEZ:
I thought we were sensitive men.

HYDE:
We're not.

FEZ:
One of us is.

HYDE:
Shut up!

FEZ:
And it's not you.

Though Hyde sometimes gets cranky with Fez, Fez can always count on his support and vice versa.

You're welcome -- and added!

Here's that moment where Hyde clasps Fez's shoulder in "Donna's Story". Hyde seems unhappy on Fez's behalf, too.

Another funny Hyde/Fez moment:

Men really must show each other affection more easily where Fez's is from.

I would say so. Remember Eric flashing back to when he introduced Fez to his parents and Fez tries to greet Red with a kiss?

It makes me wonder what Fez's high school experiences in his native country were like.

Yeah, exactly. His country definitely has different cultural mores regarding platonic male-male relationships.

I think he started out at Point Place High during his sophomore year, so he would've had one year of high school in his home country.

Ooh, could've been interesting if he brought the gang to his home country for two weeks to experience how things are where he grew up.

Fez and Hyde have a thread too? Awesome! Again I love the name and the artwork, Lisa! Bravo!

Even though I love Kelso and Fez’s fun and goofy friendship in the later seasons I do miss the Hyde and Fez friendship from the first seasons.

Another funny moment I thought of when looking at the pictures was from Romantic Weekend where Hyde tells Fez to stand guard while he sneaks some beer out of The Formans fridge and Fez let’s Hyde get caught because ‘it’s funnier this way’ lol.

Me, too. Hyde and Fez were partners in crime / Fez was Hyde's sidekick.

Yeah! Fez learned from the best, Hyde. Hyde got a taste of his own medicine.

I liked the way you put that because it’s true. Though I’m not sure if Fez would like being called a sidekick lol. With his friendship with Hyde, Hyde was the leader and Fez was the sidekick. With Kelso they were just too goofballs being goofballs, not leaders or sidekicks needed. Though I can see Kelso coming up with a few more dangerous ideas than Fez.

I think Hyde was also the one out of the group who really tried to help Fez understand the way things were in America…well in his own way lol

Fez would probably take "sidekick" to mean Hyde gets to kick him in the side.

Exactly. Fez should've stuck with Hyde. Fez was a noble guy when they were close. When he and Kelso became close, though, Fez also became a perv. Maybe it was Kelso's influence.

Yeah, Hyde tried to teach Fez the ways of American (teenage) culture.
