King Of England (Leo/Tommy Chong) Appreciation #3: "Hey, I'm Leo. And I'm also a Leo. Think about it."

Bios courtesy of Washi at Wash's '70s Site

>>> Biography:

Cheech and Chong are a fondly remembered (by those who can) pop artifact from a time when the then relatively young drug culture was viewed in a more benevolent light. After two years of working together in a Toronto-based improv group, Thomas 'Tommy' Chong, the half-Chinese, half-Scottish-Irish Canadian, collaborated with the Los Angeles-born Mexican-American Richard 'Cheech' Marin in 1969 to create a comic sensation. Cheech and Chong started out with nightclub appearances in Toronto and LA, graduated to opening act for major rock shows, including the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers Band, and eventually generated a hugely popular series of comedy records beginning in the early 1970s. While both comics exploited and lampooned stereotypes associated with their ethnicity, to varying degrees (Cheech more, Chong less), their overriding concern was the acquisition and consumption of superior marijuana. Vulgar, lowbrow but quite funny, Cheech and Chong were a classic comedy team on drugs. Cheech was the more manic while Chong was more laid-back and spacey.
Tommy Chong left the show in 2002 because of his other projects.
True to his comedy image, Tommy and his family ran Nice Dreams Enterprises, an internet company that sells marijuana bongs and pipes. He was arrested in 2003 on federal drug paraphernalia charges and sentenced in September of that year. He will spend 9 months in jail and pay around $120,000 in fines.
The only person of the 55 arrested during the US Drug Enforcement Administration's "Operation Pipe Dreams" to serve time in prison.

>>> Leo's Biography:

Leo is the hippy owner of the FotoHut, where Hyde works. He's lazy, immature, unorganized, but really funny. He said he has been married before, but since he's almost always spaced-out, we can't really believe anything he says. Leo gave Hyde his car, the ElCamino. He's kind of a mentor to Hyde. He has been busted for possession many times and he's in a club where they're raising money for a field trip to Amsterdam. He claims many things, for instance having seen a UFO. Leo has to be the funniest hippy in the world.
As for Leo, his cousin Eli told us in the episode The Battle of Evermore (5-17) that he went out of town.

Tommy Chong chat transcript (April 25, 2003)

quoted from the above link:

Q: Tracy Spencer of Oostburg Wisconsin - In the show "That 70's Show" what is your favorite character and why?

A: Tommy Chong - They're all my favorites because they're nice people.

\\
Q: RJ of Milwaukee - What happened with the 70's Show? You were on and then bam! gone...

A: Tommy Chong - I forgot the address.

//

Q: Margaret of Brown Deer, WI - Why did you leave That 70's Show? I loved your character!

A: Tommy Chong - The show changed since 9/11 and they were actually writing my character out more and more and just using me for publicity. And I am doing another movie with Cheech

\\

Q: Brett Roth of Milwaukee - I thought the guy on "That 70s Show" was a younger (and rather obvious) Tommy Chong rip-off. Didn't know it was actually you until I read it later. So what's your secret: diet, exercise, avoiding the hard stuff, or luck?

A: Tommy Chong - Diet, exercise, avoiding the hard stuff AND luck.

//

Q: Edward Williams of Milwaukee - was the Leo part made for you or did you make it yours

A: Tommy Chong - It was made for me.

\\

Q: Tim Hefter of Stoughton - What do you feel about the feds cracking down on glass pipes and bongs?

A: Tommy Chong - I feel pretty sad, but it seems to be the only weapons of mass destruction they've found this year.

Leo Quotes:

Kelso: “You just said you had a son!”
Leo: “But Hyde’s the son I never had.”
--
“Hyde your dad came by looking for you today. Which was pretty freaky because I thought this bald dude was your dad.”
--

“I choose the one with nothing in my ass.”
--

Leo: “Sure drinking looks fun. Cause all the cool kids do it. But it leads you down a sad & lonely path. Do you know why they call it beer, man.”
“Eric:Why?”
Leo: “I was just curious.”
--

“You gotta ask yourself, is there anyone else I can tell this too that doesn’t have two women in a hotel room right now?”
--

"Now, you know I don't allow alcohol in my house...so we'll just have to drink saki instead."
--
"First of all, man, I think I'm Chinese. And let's see you put your money where your mouth is!"
--

Leo : Dude, Debbie is gonna be real happy about this.
Eric : Who's Debbie?
Leo : Hello? Your girlfriend, Debbie? Jesus...
Eric : Leo, her name is Donna.
Leo : Oh... I can fix that.

Fez : But how am I supposed to pay for my shoes?
Leo : Just do what I do, man. Take money from the register when the boss isn't looking.
Hyde : Leo... Once again... You are the boss.
Leo : And, I'm not looking!

Leo : You know, man, I saw a UFO once.
Hyde : Oh, yeah? Where?
Leo : It was at this football game, man. It looked like a melon, only white. And it had, like, words written on it. Oh, yeah, it said Goodyear. It wasn't a good year. Goddamn teasing alien bastards.

Hyde : I got busted for possession.
Leo : Join the club.
Hyde : Yeah, thanks.
Leo : No, I mean join the club, man. We meet every Thursday. We're trying to raise money for a field trip to Amsterdam.

Leo : Hey man, you missed your shift at the Foto Hut. You better have a damn good excuse.
Hyde : I got busted.
Leo : Damn. That's a good excuse. What for?
Jackie: For loving me.
Leo: Why, 'cause she's like, fourteen?

Leo : [to Kitty] Hey, Mrs. Eric's mom.

Leo : Hi, Red. Would you give these to Kitty, please? [hands Red flowers] Oh, and tell her I love her. Thanks. [leaves]

Hyde : So did you bring everything?
Leo : Yeah, I got everything... except the camera... and the film... yeah, I didn't bring anything.
Hyde : Leo man, you work at a film center.
Leo : Yeah, go figure.

Hyde : Eighteen sucks, man, no more free rides. I mean, if there's a war, I could get drafted.
Leo : If there's a war, I'll see you in Canada.

Leo : In real life, my kids split on me.
Hyde : Really? My parents split on me.
Leo : Oh wow. Now we found each other. Hey, do you wanna be my father?

Leo : You can't go home, man. This pageant's your chance to spread some Christmas spirit. And that's contagious, like VD

Love it! I just wanted to post it as quickly as possible, I WANTED TO MAKE THIS NEW LEO THREAD!

Vowel renewal ceremony sounds like fun too though. I might do that some time.

Hmm ... I wonder how such a ceremony would be conducted, man.

Would any of you trust Leo to give you a tattoo?

No way! The only people you should trust to give you a tattoo are tattoo artists.

But Leo used to be a tattoo artist.

Eric: Man, I thought [Donna and I] were past the phase where we had to impress each other.

Hyde: You are. Now you’re in the she-dumps-you-for-a-biker-with-a-wicked-tattoo phase. The most entertaining of all phases.

Eric: Oh, my God, Hyde. Oh, my god -- that’s it! A tattoo is
dangerous! There’s a place next to the liquor store! I could go get one right
now!

Leo: No way man! We’re not going to let you go to a sleazy tattoo parlor and spend money on something that you’ll regret for the rest of your life. I’ll tattoo you for free, man! I’m pretty sure I used to do this for a living.

---

See? And how sweet and well-meaning is Leo?

Well, he's 'pretty sure' that he did that for a living, so... nope, pass.
