Yeah.

(This conversation took an unsettling turn.)

I wonder how things would've gone on the show had Kelso not begun cheating on Jackie the week after they'd reconciled in "Prom Night".

That could have been a very interesting thing to see development. It would've made the ship less doomed, maybe they actually could've had a shot at a relationship. And what about Zen?

I think Kelso and Jackie would've imploded anyway, just later. They were just so toxic for each other -- and neither inspired the other to grow and chance (big problem there). Although, Kelso did try to change for Jackie at the end of S3, the first half of S4. But he ultimately couldn't sustain it and ended up becoming so much worse than before.

The T7S writers would've had to be interested in seeing Kelso mature as a person. They weren't, though, at least not in any long-lasting way. They liked status quo Kelso.

I still prefer that than to have growth that feels artificial or supposed changes in a character which we are told happened, but we don't see any of it. I'm thinking of two different examples on different shows right now.

*cough* Hook! *cough* Yes. I don't know who the other character is, though.

Kelso's changes in S3-S4 were organic for him, I'd say. Laurie cheated on him, and he finally snapped out of his selfish, self-centered POV to recognize how much he'd hurt Jackie by cheating on her. That had a profound effect on him. Even though he remained essentially Kelso, he really did try to be a better boyfriend to her the second time around. He was honest and faithful and tried to give her a week of romance before they had sex again -- after she said no to his typical Kelso pushiness and said she wanted their second first time to be romantic.

He also got a job -- on her orders -- when her dad cut her off from money.

Then he slowly devolved into someone worse than he was before. AND the show retconned his changes from S3-S4, canceling out any of the good things he'd done by having him imply/admit he'd cheated on her during that time, too. Awful.

That's right! And the other one is Barney from HIMYM, but that's just my opinion. I know many people might disagree.

Hm, when you put it like that... yeah, that is some profound change that was taken away again.

I prefer a Kelso who has the potential to grow and change and to own his mistakes, but the show clearly didn't agree.

I love that picture of them. They look so happy with each other and in the moment.

I think the reason Jackie and Kelso didn't really work out with each other was because they were too similar. Jackie and Kelso were heavily flawed people, and they had a lot of the same flaws, so they couldn't really grow or develop with one another. They were both very immature, and they needed to be people who inspired them to mature.

Ashton gave a speech on human trafficking in front of the Senate, you can watch it here.

Thank you for the link, Lulu. The speech is very moving, and what AK does to help people is beyond words, really.

Agreed, from what we know of him, he is a good dude.

I'm rewatching these two. I do like that Kelso changed in season 4.

Yeah, I enjoyed when Kelso got some actual character development and growth. It's too bad the show kept taking it away from him.
