The comedy would write itself in that situation.

It would. Again, not that hard to come up with these ideas. Just start with who the characters are and go from there. (Thank goodness for fanfic.)
What do you think would've happened had Eric not given Donna a promise ring? __________________

I think even if he hadn't given her the ring, the problems they had would eventually surface, just in a different way.

They would have had to talk about all of their problems eventually.

Shout about their issues. And then not talk to each other for years. Then after twenty-five years, marriages to different people, and children with different people, they both end up single and find each other through the internet and fall back in love.

That's one way of looking at it. I think these two would always find their way back to each other, but they have so much to work on.

Before they got engaged they should have actually talked out their problems.

It could've been hilarious to see Eric and Donna constantly trying to work out their issues in hushed conversations. They're sitting on the Formans' stoop, the stairs to the second floor, everywhere. And whenever someone passes them, s/he gets annoyed at them as if they're making out: "Get a room!"

And maybe we wouldn't even know exactly what they were talking about, but by the end of the season, they announce to everyone, "It's taken us all year, but we've finally worked out our problems."
And their friends and family say, "Thank God," because they're sick of seeing them everywhere, talking about their problems. But now, of course, they see Eric and Donna making out everywhere instead. __________________
