I liked that too. We finally got to see where some of Laurie's acting out came from.

I wish the show would've explored Laurie's self-esteem issues more. We get a hint of their origin when Red says Laurie will marry someone who'll take care of her financially -- instead of expressing a belief in her ability to take care of herself.

I wish we could have seen that too. It would have made for a great storyline.

And maybe she would've eventually apologized to Jackie for what she did to her. And Eric -- with Donna and Hyde's* help -- would've realized that he'd shamed Laurie for enjoying sex instead of calling her on her actual bad behavior (e.g., purposely going after involved guys, being awful to Jackie, etc.).

*Of course, Donna and Hyde would have to be written according to their feminist characterization instead of the misogynist characterization they were too often saddled with. They both shamed Laurie for enjoying sex, too. I think it was due to clumsy, lazy writing, in part. Easier to call Laurie a s---- or wh--- than to criticize whom she pursued sexually and how she treated other people.

There could have been a lot of potential growth for Laurie, that in turn could help others grow as well. Laurie was insecure deep down and her bad behavior was like a cry for help. I feel Jackie was insecure too, but she had a different way of showing it.

Yes and yes.

Also, Laurie and Jackie's insecurities came from a different place and were different kinds of insecurities.

I wonder what was in Laurie's eighth-grade diary.

I think she must have been jealous of Eric from the get-go, though. Which inspired all that hostility in him against her.

I always felt that way about Laurie too. She was jealous of Eric.

I think Kitty related more to Eric than to Laurie -- and that Laurie became independent from Kitty pretty early. Laurie pretended to be a certain way around Red, so he never really saw (or recognized) the real her.
