The only idea I have about switching out the smiley faces is that it was a licencing and money issue, too. Check out this wikipedia article about the smiley face (I linked to the relevant section).

wow thanks, and I will say it's definitely interesting watching these episodes in their original versions (though the soundtrack list that this guy started the thread with is unfortunately inaccurate at times)

You're welcome! And if you have any corrections you'd like to share about the original music that aired in the episodes, please do.

All right I decided to make this thread in accordance with providing people with an accurate soundtrack list from the original airings of That 70s Show. All the online forums I found have at a lot of times inaccurate listings of songs that either didn't show up in the episode at all, or accidentally left out some that did appear in episodes. I was able to make this list by me watching a lot of the episodes I found in their initial airings and skimming the episodes to see what songs are in them, so I believe this is the most accurate list that's been made of the show's soundtrack. Also unfortunately I won't be able to do every episode since I only found certain ones from the original FOX airings (most of these songs were omitted on the DVD releases and syndication airings), plus I won’t be able to name every single song because they weren’t listed elsewhere and I couldn’t find out what they were, so here we go. Awesome list! I'll look over it and incorporate it into the OP (original post) of this thread.

I've updated the songs for season 1 on the OP, using your list. I added a few songs myself, too.

Ok so here's the thing that pisses me off, Mill Creek released 70s on blu ray at a price of about 48 dollars (currently), and almost none of the omitted music was restored. Yet Mill Creek released Quantum Leap on blu ray and currently it only costs 57 dollars, and they were able to restore the "vast majority" (though some fans will say all of it) of the original music that was omitted on the Universal DVD releases from the mid-00s. Also the fact that Carsey-Werner lied to Mill Creek about sending them original masters with the music intact, cause Mill Creek claimed that "Carsey-Werner had previously confirmed that the vast majority of music is the same as when broadcast. A handful of insignificant cues were apparently altered but I've never been able to get a detailed list of which were affected." There's also the fact that none of the home media versions have the original uncut version of the 5th season finale Celebration Day. Basically that episode ran about 27 minutes as a "super-sized" episode, including a "previously on" segment, and all home media versions are 22 minutes. Unfortunately this is one of the episodes I couldn't locate from the original airing.

Sadly, too often keeping the integrity of an original creation intact is often more important to its fans than to its creators.

This. Man, I hate that we don't have the "extended" version of "Celebration Day" on DVD or any deleted scenes.

Basically the removed scene took place between the scene where Red had to re-assure Kitty that kids grow up and they'll be fine, and the part when everyone walks into the kitchen after walking all the way back from the forest due to being stranded by Fez and Laurie. What happened in the scene was that after Red made Kitty feel better, we see a fantasy scene where he imagines all of Eric's friends being gone and he turns the basement into a man cave. Joe Theismann makes a guest appearance in it. I never actually saw this scene but I read about it in a description of the episode made after the original broadcast. To prove I'm not lying, here's an image of the removed scene I found on google.

We had reports from the taping of that episode on this board, and people who discussed the episode the night (or day after) it aired. The extended scenes, etc., are described there, too, so no reason to doubt your descriptions. But thank you for that picture.

Yeah, the DVD extras really could have been better.

can you possibly link me to a description of the extended scenes?

(also unfortunately I can't even watch the show on DVD/Blu-ray anymore, which is the consequence of being familiar with the original versions of the episodes)

Unfortunately, I don't have the links. When I became a co-mod of this board a few years ago, I read through every T7S thread created after 's crash many years ago. I did it to become as knowledgeable about the show as I could. That effort took many, many hours, over the course of many, many days.

The reports are buried in random threads from over ten years ago, and I probably used the Internet Wayback Machine to visit links fans provided to now-defunct fan T7S sites that also had taping reports.

Wish I'd kept a list of links to those posts.
