Some bright stars in Hollywood learn important lessons well, and early. Looking at "Gossip Girl" heartthrob/Seattle native Penn Badgley's trajectory, he clearly took one piece of wisdom to heart -- that success comes from the ability to bounce from failure to failure without losing faith.

Granted, at 21, Badgley has enjoyed more success than most actors with stars in their eyes. Born in Baltimore, Badgley spent his formative years between Richmond, Va., and Western Washington, attending Tacoma's Charles Wright Academy from ages 8 to 12. Following a stint with the Seattle Children's Theatre and a few voice-over jobs for radio, he relocated to L.A. with his mother.

At 14, Badgley took the California high school proficiency exam and enrolled in Santa Monica City College. Three years later he had enough credits to be accepted at USC as a junior. But he put college on hold to pursue acting.

His first big break was a role on "Will & Grace," and after that he had recurring roles on "The Young and the Restless." Not exactly the picture of a crash-and-burn career.

That is, until he hitched his wagon to The WB. Remember "Do Over?" No? How about "The Mountain"? Right.

Fortunately, he stuck it out until Josh Schwartz, the creator and executive producer behind "The O.C.," decided to switch coasts to make "Gossip Girl," a series of books about the scandalous lives of Manhattan prep school teens, in a show for The CW.

Badgley plays Dan Humphrey, an outsider pining away for the once-popular girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively). Like Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) on "The O.C.," Humphrey is the only truly nice guy in the show. And like Brody, Badgley is becoming "Gossip Girl's" breakout star.

Though "Gossip Girl" averages about 2.7 million viewers per first-run episode -- modest even for The CW -- it became the first new series to receive a full-season order, and is the top-rated new show among teen viewers. The guilty pleasure also happens to be one of the most downloaded shows on iTunes. (Meaning, a number of people are watching who would never admit it in public.)

Months before he became fodder for teen magazines, we caught up with Badgley at a CW party in Los Angeles to discuss his impending stardom, music and kids behaving badly.

How did you come to be on "Gossip Girl"?

Actually, I knew Stephanie Savage already -- she's the executive producer along with Josh (Schwartz). She came to me with the script, and initially I wanted to play Chace's (Crawford's) role, Nate. She said, "I'm not sure you can play the floppy-haired, nerdy, sensitive guy anymore, but just take a look at this."

Eventually they found Chace, and once I saw him I was like, "Nah, I'm not that guy. I definitely can't do that."

Didn't you kind of want to be? Everyone wants to be the bad boy.

Well, he's not really a bad boy.

What are you talking about? He cheated on his girlfriend!

That's true. That's always desirable -- but I'm that in real life! So I get to play a good guy on TV.

Are you sure you want to brag about that?

No, I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I mean, I'm not an angel. If anyone said "I'm a bad boy," I'd want to backhand him.

Tito Ortiz is known as the Huntington Beach Bad Boy. What's wrong with you? Guys your age are supposed to be all over Ultimate Fighting.

Well, I don't watch TV. I got rid of cable around last Christmas. All I watched was soccer, and I would just sit there and watch soccer all day, every day. So I got rid of it, and I started playing guitar more, and focusing on my music and writing a lot. It was a good creative thing for me. Finally, I wanted to watch Wimbledon, so I got rabbit ears for 20 bucks.

Are you in a band? Do you plan to release a CD?

No, a mutual friend of mine and Dan Byrd, who's on "Aliens in America" ... he and I have been producing songs together, where I sing on them. He raps, and I sing. I know everyone will be imagining, "Yeah, right, I'm sure it's good." But we're not doing it to sell it. We don't want to be commercially successful, because then we'd have to compromise. It's stuff that we just like to do. And it's really fulfilling, I have to say. ... Music really is my passion. And I hope that as I continue to succeed, my acting career can fund my music habit.

Do you discuss music with Josh?

Well, it's interesting. He's very into independent rock, I mean, he's into all kinds of great music. But the kind of stuff that he'd put on the show is not so much the stuff that I'd listen to. We haven't had a music conversation yet. I can imagine at some point that we will. I love soul, jazz and hip-hop, that's mainly what I listen to. I like rock, but it tends to be very bland.

You love music, and you play a character whose dad used to be in one of the Top 10 Most Forgotten Bands of the '90s -- it sounds like you're being set up to be the new Adam Brody. How are you going to live up to that?

I'm not even thinking about that, honestly. If you want to categorize every role, mine is Adam Brody. But I'm not him.

I'm not talking about the actor. I'm talking about the archetype -- the sensitive, nerdy, cute geek. Seth was into comic books, video games and Captain Oats. What's going to be your thing?

I don't know what Dan is into, actually ... I imagine there will be something there, though. I know in the "Gossip Girl" books, it's poetry. So maybe, if they want to please the fans, it'll be poetry.

Poetry is a tough sell.

A lot of the critics are talking about the cruelty of "Gossip Girl." The books are definitely tough on the characters. How well do you think that plays on television?

Look, the cruelty of teenagers is sort of universal. High school kids can be very cruel, because they're all hopelessly vulnerable and insecure, even the cool ones. They're still hard on themselves. And what this show does is present an honest representation. If anything, because it's on television, it can't ... get as R-rated as teenagers often are. So while a lot of people might think that's irresponsible, I think it's irresponsible to ignore the reality of, like, teenage America, you know?

And it doesn't encourage it in a way where it's like, "Look at these kids drinking, and smoking pot and having sex, and look at the great lives they lead!" They're all really unhappy. They're all really screwed up.

So in terms of all the parties and the glamour, you don't think the show is glorifying bad behavior?

It's not. I mean, on one hand, the show is glossy, and so anything we do is going to be glamorized. ... Anything you see on television, you might naturally want to imitate.

It's interesting, we talked to the actors and actresses in "The O.C." when they were where you are. Six months later, the show had blown up, and they were huge stars. Are you ready for that?

Wow. That's weird. Six months! I try not to think about that, because ... honestly I can't imagine what that would be like. So if it comes, it comes. I'll deal with it as best I can. I have a pretty level head on my shoulders now. ... Seattle integrity, I've got that. So I think I'll be all right.
