Val became an easy target for him, because he thought that sex and money were all that mattered to her. His words, in his mind, had no affect. Like you posted above, "he loves you not"

He did treat her very poorly. I guess the official narrative was that he was coping with a loss of Kelly, but whatever. He lost a faith in a lot of people and things, which is understandable, but he was pretty lame himself that season. He was no better than Val, and somehow he was sure he was.

His words were truly cruel to her at times. The times where he realized he had possibly hurt her and she did have feelings were the best.

Right. I thought he was offending her on purpose, but he probably did think that she was not capable of genuine feelings so she would not be hurt or take his words to the heart. When he realized she was hurt, he was ok a couple of times.

But then went to the same **** of offending her again.

Yeah, he was a mess that season. In some ways, understandable; in other ways, embarrassingly self-pitying and he needed to get over himself.

Val's redeeming factor after being unbearable selfish in early season 5 was when she recognized the true extent of Dylan's suffering and told Jim & Cindy.
