Dylan/Steve/Kelly #3: Because Those Who Play Together, Stay Together.

I know this trio wasn't front and center, but it deserves to be acknowledged because, I believe, their stories were interrelated. And you'd be surprised how often their united friendship was addressed.
The background story between them was under the surface ... yet essential. Like blood.

I'm gonna add a lot of stuff to the opening. It's going to be beautiful, you'll see. I'll start playing around with the opening tomorrow.

I feel like 'play' is the magic word of the thread now.

I will never look at that word the same now.

Anyway, I think if Dylan had known about what Steve had said to Kelly he would have done the same thing as (What's his name) did.

Thanks!

Here's the summary:
Quote:
Not long ago, I wrote out the events of late S10 when Jack arrived, and it's a virtual meditation on Steve and Kelly's continued role in his life.

Sorry for the boring chronology and such, and the parts that don't fit into the topic directly, but here's what I wrote:

It's a general summary of the S10 episodes, "Eddie Waitkus", "I Will Be Your Father Figure", and "Ever Hear the One About the Exploding Father?" (10.18 to 10.20).

This storyline is set off as Steve and Dylan watch “Jeopardy” at the Bel Age Hotel, where Dylan lives once again. Steve casually changes the channel to the news, where he thinks he catches a glimpse of Jack McKay as one of the passengers on a plane that had to make an emergency landing at LAX. Somehow, he manages to get Dylan footage of the broadcast so he can play it over. Pausing on the video frame of his father, Dylan says to himself, “… You son of a bitch.”

After going down to the Public Storage facility where Jack’s papers are held and finding it burglarized, Dylan pays a visit to the FBI for the first time since S5 and speaks to Christine Pettit, his dad’s former fiance. He accuses her of helping to fake Jack’s death and being aware of a break-in at the storage room. She denies everything, insisting that he’s still dead. Dylan leaves her with the VHS tape, only to show up later with the following epiphany: He never saw a body, there were no dental records proving it was Jack who died, and he didn’t actually see his father get into that car before it exploded.

Hearing the news from Steve, Kelly lets him know that the company she used to work for did PR for the airline in question, so she was able to obtain a passenger list. Dylan recognizes one name: Eddie Waitkus. The audience is reminded that him and his father connected greatly through baseball and there was even a book Jack used to read him as a boy called “The Natural”, the story of “a young man full of promise who gets shot by a woman, disappears, and then suddenly returns.” Well, this book was based on the true story of baseball player Eddie Waitkus.

Certain that this passenger is his father, disguised under an alias he knew his son would understand, Dylan sets out to speak with the flight crew. One staff member gives him a lead that Mr. Waitkus is from Tolleson, Arizona. This of course begs the question of how it is that Jack is still high profile enough for a flight attendant to remember this, but not nearly as alarming as the fact that Kelly then makes out with a copy of Mr. Waitkus’s electric bill by telling the company she’s his wife. Wouldn’t she need a fake ID at least? Anyway, moving on … it’s about at this time, with an exact address in hand, that Dylan starts to get angry, expressing the fact that Jack could have called just once in the past 7 years and he could have maybe helped him hide.

Dylan and Kelly later drive up to Jack’s house and sit in their car until he arrives home. Eventually, he appears, and it’s revealed that he has a wife and 6 year old son. Dylan decides not to approach him, remarking that, “There’s no place for me here”. Feeling defeated and back in Beverly Hills, one talk with Kelly clearly reveals his hurt. Dylan explains that “a million conversations” could never change what’s been taken away from him (a father, his wife, general sense of trust). He’s exhausted by the possibility that understanding the truth could make so much of his life “seem even more pointless”, seeing how he’s blamed his father’s death for his continued tendency to drink, isolate himself, and never finish any goal he sets (S4 refutes this notion quite a bit, though). Dylan confesses that he’s not sure he’s ready to find out who he is without that “crutch” at his disposal. Kelly still insists on ‘closure’, however, so she calls Jack against his will.

When Jack shows up at Dylan’s door, he confirms that he’s been in the Witness Protection Program since 1993, “under the thumb of a U.S. Marshal.” With glassy eyes, Dylan tells him that his new life looks “a lot better than the urn [he] picked out for him”. He then asks if he was supposed to see the explosion and Jack responds that an FBI agent grabbed him just before and threw him in a van. He knew they’d do that, but not when or where. Jack apologizes for taking a deal that meant walking away from every part of his life, and Dylan’s sarcasm turns quickly to anger. He throws his father out, despite the fact that he can only stay a week.

Amidst confronting Kelly about what she did, she protests, “Just go to him, Dylan. Tell him everything you’ve ever wanted to tell him, even if it’s just goodbye.” He heeds this advice and shows up at the Palm Wind Motor Lodge, where Jack insists that he’s ready to listen to his son’s grief. “Well you better step back cause I’m pretty pissed”, Dylan says rather calmly. His father asks him what he’s been up to since he got back from Europe in S9. “Easing into things … easing out.” The conversation sounds promising until Dylan discovers that Jack’s wife, Lisa, and son, Jack (his namesake), know about everything in his past except for the fact that he has another son. “I had forgotten where your priorities are”, Dylan quips, before leaving.

Jack calls him the next day and asks that they meet. “I want us to be together”, he says. […] “But we don’t have time for your incredibly justified anger to pass.” As it stands, the choice is between Jack leaving the Witness Protection Program or Dylan coming in. Welcome to the ‘Honeymoon’ phase of their reunion. Jack is sure that the guys he testified against are either dead or in jail. Dylan is less sure, but attracted to the idea of starting over. They find a private security firm that can provide adequate protection for them as Jack leaves Witness Protection. They even have plans for Dylan to fly out immediately and meet his step-mom and half-brother the next day. Dylan becomes rather ecstatic for one scene and thanks Kelly for helping him, seeing as he’s now “happy for the first time in a long time”.

Cut to the office of the FBI again. Christine calls Dylan in to alert him that Jack’s in danger. They picked up on a recent dialogue between two guys he had testified against that found out he’s alive. After acknowledging Christine’s switch of memory from the last time they met, Dylan considers the merit of her warning. Namely, that asking his father to have a free relationship with him might cost him his life … for real. Ultimately, Dylan decides he must say goodbye. He trusts her because she plays the audio tape for him. Plus, he had already suffered the guilt in high school of believing that his father’s efforts to rebuild their relationship was the very move that got him killed.

Dylan’s final words to Jack: “I’ve hated you for a long time. You don’t know what it’s like to hate your father. It ruins everything. … I don’t hate you anymore.” Reluctant to let him go, Jack hugs his son and they both tear up. He leaves again, to his life as “Eddie Waitkus”, and that concludes the 10 year father/son McKay saga. Amazingly, Dylan makes no mention of Erica, the half-sister and daughter of Jack he discovers in S4, or Antonia, daughter of Toni Marchette, the man responsible for Jack’s “death” in S3, whom Dylan married and became a widow to in S6. He could have also mentioned Toni’s suicide in S9. Perhaps we’re supposed to assume this all happened off-screen. Speaking of off-screen, apparently no phone call to Iris either. “Yeah, mom? Guess what …”

From a personal perspective, it felt like the story in this three-episode arc was originally meant to develop into something larger, and then the idea got aborted at the last minute. Ultimately, it was used to further the well-hinted-at Dylan/Kelly reunion and give Dylan believable peace of mind before the show ended its long run.

I at least wanted Kelly or Steve to ask Dy about it, so that if he had an off-camera (read: cop-out) discussion with Jack along those lines it could at least be acknowledged. But, alas ...
