Jake mattered to me only inasmuch as he was strategically used to show Kelly's desire/openness to falling in love (and what she's like in a soft, vulnerable state with all her snarky walls down), right before Dylan was cast away to get to know her better over the summer.

If you're talking about an exact reference line, "You know, winning Most Beautiful is not the most important thing in my life either ...", comes to mind, but this is when she's still trying to convince Dylan to project the image people want from him. She hasn't broken free of her need yet; not until the end of the episode, but she's frustrated by it.

That must be part of it too yes. It was short but the first on screen love interest for Kelly (besides Brandon, allthough i didn't think it was this serious for Kelly back then as Jake was) and intense. Like you said it showed a different side of her which is always interesting to find out with characters. And now i love watching those episodes back too since he's my favorite guy on MP, and she's my favorite girl on 90210. He's the badboy type with the big mouth but a good heart, who you have to get to know better to know what he's really like and doesn't let people in too easily just like Dylan. I can relate to Kelly here, that must have to do with it too.

Somehow i don't like it too easy.
