Ahhh, Season 5. Where do I start?
As I mentioned in the S3 & 4 threads, I'm not a fan of this season at all. The writing was a real downgrade from S4. (And, it was only going to get worse after that, unfortunately.) And, before anyone says anything, my dislike for S5 isn't entirely based on the absence of Brenda. Of course, one of the after effects of Brenda leaving was that Kelly was "officially" the lead female now, so "The Perils of Poor, Pitiful Kelly Taylor" was in full force this season, even more so than it was in S3 & 4. (And, once Jim & Cindy left at the end of S5, that allowed Kelly to become the lead character, period, now that there was only one Walsh left.) Instead, my hatred of S5 comes from the Dylan fan in me. S5 was absolutely terrible to poor Dylan. While S4 saw some of the "old" Dylan creeping back in (after the complete character lobotomy he received in S3), that little "progress" was completely destroyed in S5. In the early part of the season, we got to see Dylan act like a selfish, drunk a-hole who treated everyone around him like crap. Oh, joy. And, then, once Downward!Spiral!Dylan turned into Sober!Dylan, the end result was a selfish, careless jerk-off who only cared about getting back with Kelly, screw all his "friends." (And, Brandon, who I can safely say, was not his friend anymore, by this point.) Is it any wonder that Luke wanted to leave the show by this point? Of course, the "big" story this season was Valerie, the daughter of the Walshes' friends from Buffalo. As far as Val goes, I'm mixed on her. I think she had the potential to be a very engaging & complex morally ambiguous character, but the writing by this point just wasn't strong enough to fully explore Val's complexity, and in the end, what we got was a potentially interesting character being constantly stuffed in the two-dimensional villain box to serve as a foil to the "virginal" and "Stepford-esque" Kelly. (Kelly/Valerie=Virgin/Wh0re? You betcha'.) However, while I won't give any credit to the writers, I will give credit to Tiffani Thiessen. Despite the (lack of) quality of the the writing she was getting, Thiessen continued to put her best effort into her performance, and she was successfully able to prove to me that she was a far better actress than her "Saved By the Bell" background indicated. In fact, I probably would've outright hated Val if it wasn't for Thiessen's performance. (And, as an aside, Thiessen's acting in this show has always made me wish that she, instead of Rose McGowan, ended up playing Paige Matthews on Charmed. Nothing against McGowan, but I think Thiessen's a better actress. Plus, in my fantasy of how "Charmed Shoulda' Went," she would be "replacing" Alyssa instead of Shannen, so we'd be seeing Brenda & Val working together as witches. How more awesome could you get?) Anyways, on to the questions: Favourite episode? The Christmas episode and "Hazardous to Your Health." Christmas episodes are usually good (even in crappy seasons), and Dylan & Val with Jonesy in Mexico was one of the the only real highlights from this season. (Plus, that episode is the last time we see the "real" Erica. Her next appearance after that will be as a teenage prostitute in S8. Just wonderful. ) Worst episode? Gee, where do I start? Since I dislike so much of this season, I'll group the worst episodes by story arc: the Downward!Spiral!Dylan episodes, the Finley episodes, and the "Dylan & Kelly are Soulmates!" episodes. There, that was easy. Favourite SL? Dylan & Val with Jonesy. Seriously, Jonesy was one of the few bright spots in this dire season. (I'll also give a shout out to Andrea's affair. That storyline was very OOC for her, but I hate Andrea/Jesse so much that I actually didn't care. As I said in the S4 thread, Andrea deserved way better than Jesse.) Worst SL? Downward!Spiral!Dylan, Finley, and "Dylan & Kelly are Soulmates!" (for obvious reasons). I'll also give a "shout out" (lol) to Burned!Kelly (one of the many damsel-in-distress SLs that would come to define "The Perils of Poor, Pitiful Kelly Taylor."), Ray/Donna (Ray was the first out of many terrible non-David Donna boyfriends we would have to slug through for at least half a season.), and Dylan/Kelly/Brandon. (Do you know how painful it was to watch Dylan & Brandon go from being best friends to worst enemies overnight?) Favourite character? None. The only characters I didn't utterly despise in some way were Clare, David, Donna, and Steve, but, then again, I've always been "neutral" on them. Character that annoyed you the most? Kelly & Brandon, tied. They were both unbearable this season. (I'd also mention Dylan, Andrea, and Val, but then again, Dylan & Andrea were in the process of getting written out of the show by this point, so I pitied them as victims of complete character assassinations more than anything. And, I already mentioned my thoughts on Val.) Favourite couple? None. The only couple that didn't totally piss me off was Clare/David, but I think Clare is much better with Steve, IMO. (From what I saw of Clare/Steve, anyways.) Couple that annoyed you the most? Kelly/Brandon, Kelly/Dylan, Andrea/Jesse, Ray/Donna, I hated most of the couples this season. (I'll give Dylan/Val a break, since they weren't really a "couple," and Tiffani & Luke had hot chemistry. That doesn't make their "relationship" any less "icky," though.) Best friendship scene? None I can think of. There really wasn't a whole lot of friendship this season, IMO. Best angst scene? Drunk!Dylan calling Brandon out on his crap in "Things That Go Bang in the Night." While I abhor Downward!Spiral!Dylan and the way Dylan and Brandon became worst enemies in mid S4-onward, I think Brandon really needed a reality check by this point after the way he dumped all over his sister and former best friend. Worst scene? It's hard to choose, but I'll go with every Brandon/Dylan scene in "Sweating it Out," and all the K/D and K/B crap from "Hello Life, Goodbye Beverly Hills." The Dylan/Kelly/Brandon triangle seriously makes the Brenda/Dylan/Kelly one from S3 look like quality TV, which says a lot about the quality of writing this season. Favourite guest star? Jonesy. Really, he was one of the few bright spots this season. |

Just the western stuff in "The Real McCoy" it didn't really interest me. Favourite guest star? Milton Berle as Saul Howard in "Sentenced to Life" |

Okay here we go:
Favourite episode? "Rave On", "Who's Zoomin' Who (Loved all Kelly/Jackie/Erin and Kelly/Cindy scenes), "Rock Of Ages", "Up in Flames", "Injustice for All", "Stormy Weather", "Alone At the Top", "Love Hurts", "A Song for My Mother", "Girls on the side", "Hello Life, Goodbye Beverly Hills". Worst episode? The Real Mccoy, i'm not into fantasy episodes/scenes. Favourite SL? Kelly and the fire/insecurities with the modelingwork, Kelly/Brandon/Dylan Triangle. And the on campus rapist. Worst SL? Probably Andrea/Jesse, and Dylan/Val/Mexico, i wasn't too interested. Favourite character? Kelly, Dylan, Brandon, David & Donna. Character that annoyed you the most? Finley probably. Favourite couple? From the official couples Kelly/Brandon. From the none official couples, but still sort of (near the end) Kelly/Dylan. Couple that annoyed you the most? Valerie/Dylan, i know they werent really in love or anything, but they slept with eachother and spent a lot of time together. I didn't care for that. She definitely didn't help him staying on the right path. Best romantic scene? Dylan literally sweeping Kelly off her feet in "Hello Life, Goodbye Beverly Hills". Best humorous scene? Kelly/Donna/Clare and the snoring situation. Can't really think of another one rightnow. Best friendship scene? Dylan running outside to support a crying Andrea, after her affair ended. That was sweet of him. Best angst scene? Kelly trapped in the fire, and most of the Kelly/Brandon/Dylan triangle situation at the beginning and end of the season. Worst scene? Dylan kissing that woman he brought home in front of Kelly, Kelly saying it's over ("Under The Influence") Favourite guest star? Don't really have one. __________________
