one of the only episodes after the Hawaii vacation that actually made sense for the characters. Plus, it was nice to see Andrea back (and quite cruel of the writers to break her and Jesse up off screen I wonder how the Jesse actor felt about it?)

Oh come on, that is not fair to Daniel Cosgrove, who's a better actor than Jason and Luke, IMO, and possibly also better looking. It's not his fault he's got to play such a dull character.

And I don't think he was trying to look cool here or James Dean-like here at all. He was hiding from Kelly that he was smoking (an another super-exciting S9 plot :eyeroll: ). I think he was supposed to be sort of comical, but it's hard to say just from the caps.

I'm not explicitly blaming Cosgrove. However, I definitely think the writers were pushing him from beginning to end to very obviously be the 'new' Brandon. [This makes sense of the interview in which Jason says he knew that Mr Spelling was very hurt about his premature departure. I can imagine he created Matt in some sort of revenge mood towards Jason/Brandon.]

Matt, to me, was a product of the company NEEDING this show to keep going. He lacked personality because he was there to attempt to fulfill a void for the writers. Cosgrove didn't need to make an effort because he was in the latter stages of a show that had long outstayed its welcome. He was a result of the desperate attempts of the writers to give Kelly a new guy to have an on/off relationship with as an excuse to have another boring love triangle in time for Luke to return.

That obviously didn't work, because Daniel doesn't have 10 years of chemistry with Luke. Jason did.

Andddd this is the problem when a show goes on for longer than about 4-5 seasons. They just end up recycling everything.

Valerie was the biggest risk the show ever took, because at least they tried to make her very different from Brenda instead of a carbon-copy of her. Tiffani was Shannen's replacement, but she didn't feel like she was there to be the new Shannen. The show did a decent job of carrying on as if Val had always been there in a way (and didn't go out of its way to destroy Brenda's past, except in some areas where the Dylan/Kelly relationship ending up coming back again for a short time).
