I did like that he comforted her after that confrontation.

I think in that time, Dylan was sort of a mess. I hate to say it but it seems like in the beginning of S5, both Dylan and Val just used each other for sex; not so much in negative way (except that it hurt Steve). The reason why I don't think it's negative is because neither of the minded. They knew they weren't in love with each other....but the good news is that later in S5, I think Val grew fond of Dylan and wouldn't mind being with him.

^That's what I got from it as well. Val wanted something more...while Dylan didn't know.

When you're as messed up as they both were in the beginning of S5, using each other for sex takes on a very visceral, self-destructive tone (which is totally fine by me - I loved the storyline) and it was mixed in with other ways they were attempting to self-medicate (drugs, etc). Well, I guess, then, it's just representative of their inner destruction, because we're allowed to see how much they're trying to remove themselves from being able to feel love for another person.

But, like you guys said, it doesn't work in the end. She grows attached and Dylan, coming to understand the motivation behind her own ways, does start to give a damn. It's in both their nature to give a damn.

Perhaps too huge a portion of daddy issues for him to deal with that season/at that point in his life.

And I think towards the end of S5 when the whole triangle happened again, I think Val was really jealous (and hated) Kelly. The gloves are off in S6.

So true. I mean, she was casual about it but damn it if I don't love her reactions to things she couldn't even dream of having to compete with. Like, 'what's all this seminal link crap? Huh, what?' Best when Charlie's there to explain the situation to her or otherwise watch (and especially since he wants a threesome! lol)

Dy: "I just can't get over it. I mean, Kelly Taylor on the cover of a magazine ..."
V: "You can work miracles with an airbrush."

That's her whole reaction to the cover girl plot.

^ "They should call you the terminator...who else is able to knock two guys with one shot?" (or something like that).

Sorry, I'm talking much about Kelly/Val here.

I think that Val and Dylan could've helped each other mature if they weren't so easy in giving into their own bad habits such as drugs.

ITA I think that was the moment when he realized she was much more than just a chick who liked playing bad-girl. She moved him because he recognized someone who was struggling as well, imo.

I think he always knew, actually. He just didn't count on it being necessary to find out what that "much more" entailed. Dylan tried to nip that possibility in the bud early on when he told her he didn't want anything to do with her if she lived at the Walsh house. "You're Valerie?" So much for his anonymous one-night-stands with no accountability.

That mirroring was part of the attraction. Both disenchanted with the "phony", judgmental people around them, both with dead fathers, both trying to escape from themselves (Dylan more so -- I think Valerie had a different stake, more to do with controlling how people react to her).

Apart from moving him, Dylan was also in a unique position of vulnerability with her early on. This woman who's supposed to be emotionally disposable is the only one who knows the secret he's carrying, that he lost all his money in a scheme and for some reason needs to pretend, for his friends, that it didn't happen. She already knows that he fears being disowned by those who supposedly don't matter anymore.

I hadn't seen it that way and it totally makes sense Especially when Dylan is just the kind of person who can see through people's bs and shields right away (except when too much emotional baggage is involved...aka, anything that has to do with his parents), so it's no surprise he sensed the deal with Valerie right away but at the same time he didn't have the emotional strenght to care enough.

ITA Gosh, this makes me remember how much I felt for Dylan in the scene where Val discovers that he's the one who took money from the After Dark's income. Dylan was incredible vulnerable at that point and his friends had no idea about what was going on

Thus his nervous laughter and attempt to turn things around ("Jokes on you, kid"). When she like mock-chokes him and he looks scared for a minute, I think the consideration flashed before him as to whether there was another angle to Valerie that was less predictable, lol. "You think so, huh?"

Yeah and I think that Dylan felt like an outcast from his friends (before the intervention in S5) and that Val was the only one who can sympathize his pain. That's probably why he didn't care that she was a bad influence on him.
