There are obviously many reasons why Dy/K were drawn to each other/stayed together/longed for one another, but I believe that, for Dylan, her being his oldest female friend was part of the appeal. Kelly and Steve, especially by S10, were like family to him. And Dylan's feelings about family has been the character's most dominant motif throughout the series.

It seems everything goes back to it, including his relationship with Brenda and Antonia. He has a way of being heavily influenced by the girl he's with when their signature moments coincide with those of ... well, Jack. When does he first kiss Brenda? Two seconds after having a screaming match with his dad. Then he went on to, in my mind, date her for her parents. I don't even need to explain Antonia.

Then his whole period of starting over with his father and being happy in a whole new way came right when he started seeing Kelly. She's almost like an emblem of that time, and the one person who believed in the possibility that Jack was 'a good man'. This obviously would rate high with Dylan, despite his own conflicted feelings about Jack. Also, it really WAS his father's wish that Dylan and Kelly stay together. Dylan knows this.

Here's a cap from "Dead End" where Dy practically decides right then and there that Kelly is a 'keeper'. Christine had just accepted Jack's proposal and Kel is smiling at them both as Dy smiles at her.

Hey, Dylan already showed that he fuses the two somewhat when he tells Kelly that, "If you hadn't called me that day at the Marina, I would have fried in that car!"

"Well, I guess we're both basketcases, then."

"No ... we're Soulmates." Even if he's using the term loosely, at that point it's not unreasonable to assume that Dylan thinks it was fated that Kelly save him from certain death. Not that I buy the soulmate thing, but you know ...

Further clarification: If Kelly believes that Jack is a good man, then Dylan can believe that he himself is a good man. She sustains his faith in other people's faith in him ... which amounts to his faith in himself. That's why all those times they weren't together, it looked to me as if he were a man withering away. Hell, towards the very end, he looks so tired and almost too filled with hurt to speak.

Dylan is a man trying to preserve all that he has lost. Kelly is someone he has 'lost' ... but it doesn't have to be that way.

Bee, remember your statement about undisclosed resentment that could have developed between Dy and K between the time he left and the time he returned? Because they didn't uphold their friendship? Well, that's similar to what I've imagined for Dy/K in the earliest years. But it's complicated.

Dylan is a boy who, though he put on a show for Brandon in episode 2 (and only that episode), always had a good sense of who he was -- and deeply resented the falsity of the town he lived in. Therefore, I always imagined that he held some sorrow over what 'Beverly Hills' and social/life circumstance had "done" to his former friends, Kelly and Steve ... both changed to have an amazingly lost sense of identity. He was still amused by Steve's futile efforts at bravado because he understood his insecurities. But Kelly ... he considered 'ruined', though of course he was attracted to her. They began flirting a year prior to the series, somewhat reunited under the false pretenses of their respective "masks", as Steffi put it. This will all come to a head in S3, as we all know , when they have to relate to each other for real, amidst the same environment where they had been 'branded' by others.

Dylan could see right through to Kelly, and that she was potentially 'reachable' (ie, could learn to be/love herself), but for Kelly I believe it took some time for her to recognize Dylan beyond his image. This was because she had so many illusions about herself. As her character developed towards S3, softening and able to begin receiving genuine affection from people, it just felt right to me that Dylan would be the one to pick up on it and be that man for her. It was Kelly's fear of this that kept them so distanced in S1 and S2, apart from the crucial fact that she didn't want to jeopardize her relationship with the Walsh family, who represented a whole new level of security, just like they did for Dylan.

When his friend Jake was going to mess with her (emotionally and sexually), Dylan stepped in like, 'No, not on my account.' He knew that Kelly had come a long way and was invested in her personal growth, even if it had to be from afar.
