I should've known from the Pilot when Kelly only allowed Brenda to sit next to her to stop a fat girl from sitting there, then asked her "are you smart?" (thus basically using her for the rest of the episode to cheat her way through Science) that their friendship would end up messy.

Also, the way that guy sitting behind Kelly is looking at her is funny.

I guess it was a sign that Kelly was shallow etc., but I guess it was also not supposed to be taken very seriously. In a way, I find Kelly's question honest and charming.

Back in S1, diffrences and conflicts between the girls were used to strengthen their friendship. It stayed like that until S3. Then... meh.

^ I loved their interactions regarding Max Caulfield in the pilot. Just very realistic BFF conversations about the potential of dating an older guy and Brenda being naive about the trouble it could cause.

Yep

Let's put it this way - I'm onto a season 3 re-watch and Kelly's characterization is MUCH better in the Pilot episode than it is in early season 3. Not good, because character development is meant to increase, not decrease.

I'm gonna have to go and waffle about my complaints in the season 3 thread. Everything that's happening between Brenda and Kelly since she returned from Paris is NOT good.

In fact, even Brenda's departure on the bus (3x02) was problematic -- did you notice how quickly Kelly started flirting with Dylan? (Even though they'd never had alone time together in the show before?) The ret-con writing was already destroying the B/K friendship.
