It's a Back Story. They were discussing Brenda's smoking. Kelly was super judgy and nervous about it.

The first half of S3 felt weird with these two, among other things because their roles somehow seemed reversed compared to S1. Brenda was interested in more guys while Kelly wanted only Dylan. Brenda was very social and wanted to go to the parties or organize them even, while Kelly was doing, um, social distancing , and was sulking in. Brenda was smoking, Kelly was preachy. Just remember B.Y.O.B. when Brenda was criticizing Kelly drinking. But it felt so much better because she was genuinely concerned about her and the consequences. Kelly was just like a poster child against Brenda smoking. And it felt like she just needed an excuse to roll her eyes at her.

I liked Brenda's feisty attitude in that episode.

I noticed that, too

If you ask me, it was all part of the crew's concentrated effort to make the audience hate Brenda because they were already contemplating fazing out Shannen.

Oh, I think that was pretty obvious.

It was really not ok of Brenda to spill out her friends' private stuff on TV just like that. I was about to say that she would never do such stuff, but she actually did spill out Kelly's secret before, in Baby Makes Five, when Kelly confided in her and Donna about Jackie's pregnancy, and they both had to open their big mouth.

Kelly was also exposing Brenda's secret in a sneaky way when she brought Tim (Cardio Funk guy) to Peach Pit knowing Dylan would be there. Also, used all that Brenda told her about Rick to throw it in her face when Brenda and Rick met her and Dylan - all while keeping her secret about getting together with Dylan behind Brenda's back.
