Good choice of title.

I did love that opening season 2 episode. Brenda was terrified and Kelly was genuinely being a good friend, also warning Dylan that he needed to step up in his consideration for her. (Although I do think Dylan deserved an equal amount of consideration because it would've changed both of their lives.)

Well, it was not his body, so I do think Brenda deserved more. However, he deserved more than he got from her for sure, because his reaction was GREAT. He was there for her, he was sweet and understanding. Even his comment about the pill was not so out of place. Kelly berated him for being a typical guy, and I guess she was right, but it was not such an unreasonable thing to ask, given that they were at the doctor's already.

Then again, dude, just use the condoms

Birth pill does bring a certain hormonal disbalance to the body. And again, it was not his body.

It's heartbreaking that Dylan actually listens to Kelly's quick advice and makes sure he listens to Brenda in the aftermath of the incident, yet she still dumps him.

Reminds me of that episode where Kelly is preparing Brenda for using birth control, "wanna pick out names? How about Dylan Jr or Brendina?"

It was irresponsible of Dylan to not use protection, especially after the episode where the girl who had AIDs gave the class a strong talk about the importance of safe sex.

Kelly had great lines to Brenda in that episode. "Do I get pinned or something?"/"Yeah, preferably to the mattress." or "You sound so clinical."/"Clinical would be 'When should I schedule the procedure?"

So funny and witty, and so useful at the same time.

I think they used it, and that was the whole point of the AIDS plotline. Brenda/Dylan were like a poster couple for the safe sex. They even have a talk about it in BBB. He's shocked that she might be pregnant, and asks how it is possible. I guess he would not have asked hadn't they used condoms. She replies she does not know and that he said they did everything right. He says they did. IDK, maybe they were not THAT responsible, but I think they always had protection.

Yeah and I do think that Brenda talking to Kelly about it made her come to terms with her actual feelings about the idea of growing up too soon. Kelly had a lot of sexual experience at a young age and basically looked after herself because Jackie was so messed up during her adolescence. Brenda grew up in a sheltered family and didn't really know what it meant to be so grown up at that age, until she moved to Beverly Hills.

I think, to have a friend like Kelly, it really helped Brenda figure out herself in a lot of ways.

Well, Brenda often acted more grown up than Kelly. Despite her parents' remarks, she did not give in so easily to the peer pressure. She also had a lot of understanding for other people's circumstances, she was a better listener than Kelly etc. It is interesting that no one ever brings up that Brenda actually had a bigger tragedy than Kelly before moving to Beverly Hills - death of her beloved aunt. Kelly never had the death case in her surrounding. Sure, Brenda had a family support in that case and many other, while Kelly was much or less alone with her problematic mother. But given all the money of her family, she sure as hell had help, nannies while she was growing up. Otherwise she would have been on the street, and the kids in school would know about Jackie. Kelly did look after herself, but she must have had a professional help too. Things are easier when you're rich.

And it's not like "being on her own" made her necessarily do more mature stuff. I think that was the point of the early seasons, actually. She missed the guidance when it comes to sex, alcohol, things to do for popularity etc. And it is perfectly understandable she was disoriented. I just think that in all later appraisals of her early "maturity" it is often omitted that just because she got some experiences early, it does not mean it made her more mature (I am not saying you're doing that, just making a general point). Sex is a perfect example. She was a great guide to Brenda technically, when it comes to contraception, and we all love her for that, but could she really tell Brenda that she is not obliged to have sex when she thought that partner expected it? No, because Kelly herself did not have that level of maturity and self-confidence yet. That is something Brenda came up with on her own. And she helped Kelly figure that out too. Not vice versa.

Indeed, but I think that goes both ways. Brenda definitely helped Kelly to figure out what she wanted and who she wanted to be too. There were so many occasions. Think just of B.Y.O.B. when drunk Kelly slept with Steve, and Brenda talked to her about drinking and consequences. Not judgementally, simply about seriousness of drinking (Kelly was in denial, claiming that her mother drinks and she just sips). And Kelly admitted it was not all so cool to drink at the parties, and she did not want to be bothered by Steve again. Not because Brenda thought it was wrong or something, but simply because she did not want it. Brenda helped her a lot with cleaning her reputation, getting confidence in people around her, and figuring out that just because popular people are expected to do some stuff, they do not REALLY have to do them. Brenda was the one who helped her fight societal expectations. No one else. Brenda was the first person to open her up.
