Shutter Island (S&S) #2: Because we can't wait for the anticipated Leo & Marty reunion

Shutter Island (2009)

About Shutter Island

It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Recent News:

New Release Date: February 19th, 2010

UPDATE - Paramount has released a statement regarding the new release date:

Quote:
“Our 2009 slate was greenlit in a very different economic climate and as
a result we must remain flexible and willing to recalibrate and adapt to
a changing environment. This is a situation facing every single studio
as we all work through the financial pressures associated with the
broader downturn. Like every business, we must make difficult choices to
maximize our overall success and to best manage Paramount’s business in
a way that serves Viacom and its shareholders, while providing the film
with every possible chance to succeed both creatively and financially.”

“Martin Scorsese is not just one of the world’s most significant
filmmakers, but also a personal friend. Following a highly successful
2009, we have every confidence that Shutter Island is a great anchor to
lead off our 2010 slate and the shift in date is the best decision for
the film, the studio and ultimately Viacom.”- Brad Grey, Paramount
Pictures Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Manny The Movie Guy - You Won't See Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" in October! The Film Has Been Moved!

Quote:
If you've been jonesing to see the new collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, you may just have to wait a little bit longer.

Paramount Pictures has moved "Shutter Island" from Oct. 2 to Feb. 19.

Why? The studio said economic reasons made them move the film six weeks before its release date.

Paramount Pictures chairman-CEO Brad Grey said in an official statement:

"Our 2009 slate was greenlit in a very different economic climate and as a result we must remain flexible and willing to recalibrate and adapt to a changing environment."

"This is a situation facing every single studio as we all work through the financial pressures associated with the broader downturn. Like every business, we must make difficult choices to maximize our overall success and to best manage Paramount's business in a way that serves Viacom and its shareholders, while providing the film with every possible chance to succeed both creatively and financially."

Well, I was one of the Scorsese fans jonesing for this film. Based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, I was also pinning my Oscar hopes to "Shutter Island."

But alas, we have to wait four months from its original release date. Oh, and being released in February doesn't bode well for the film. It's traditionally a "burial ground" month for movies. But then again, "Silence of the Lambs" was released in February, and we all knew how well it did at the Oscars.
Shutter Island Pushed Back To 2010 [UPDATED] - Screen Rant

Quote:
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Paramount has pushed back Martin Scorsese’s latest film, Shutter Island, from October 2nd this year, to February 19th, 2010. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) novel is the second high profile project to be pushed back from Fall this year to February next year. Earlier this month they moved The Wolfman to February 19th (a week before Shutter Island’s new date).

The reasons for Shutter Island’s release date move - a film that some people already have on their predicted Oscar nominee list - are many, but the main ones are a lack of financing (for the home video market) and DiCaprio’s lack of availability to promote the film internationally. An insider (of Nikki Finke’s at Deadline Hollywood) is saying that the studio is hoping that Shutter Island’s chances will be helped with the new date because of the multi-Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs being released in a similar February date back in 1991. And now that the Academy has expanded the amount of Best Picture nominees from five to ten, it will be easier for the film to get an nomination.

That last part I can buy, but the Silence of the Lambs things sounds like a bit of a stretch to me… in no way a guarantee.

Along with the DiCaprio promotion availability problem, and the Oscar nomination attempt for 2011, there could be a couple of other reasons for this move: The studio thinks it will make more money early next year and wants to spend their money on other projects before the end of 2009. And expanding on the Oscar nomination thing, they may think there are other Oscar-worthy films this year that will be severe competition. I think it’s probably a combination of all of those mentioned.

However, even if the studio has their legitimate reasons to change the date (I’m sure they do, or else they wouldn’t have done it), it still comes as a bit of a surprise to me. With Shutter Island being Scorsese’s next movie (a multiple Oscar nominee, and winner a couple of years ago with The Departed), and this being his fourth time working with DiCaprio, I thought for sure they would have pushed this for at least the directing nomination, if not the acting one, too.

There’s also the fact that the movie is only a couple of months away, and NOW they’re suddenly changing the date…

Of course, that’s me saying that without having seen the movie, so maybe it’s not as good as the trailer (and the director/cast) makes it look. Whatever the reason, I’d say they’ve taken some of the juice out of the anticipation for the movie that they built up thus far, particularly with that creepy trailer that appeared a couple of months ago.
Scorsese's Shutter Island Bumped to Feb. 2010 - News in Film

Scorsese’s Shutter Island Bumped to Feb. 2010

Published by Jeff Leins on: August 21st, 2009

Shocking news today as Paramount announced they were pushing Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island from this October to February 19, 2010. This removes the Leonardo DiCaprio movie from awards consideration (for this year, any way) and into a slot usually considered the dumping grounds of studios who lose confidence in a property.

Nikki Finke, who broke the news this morning, says it was purely a business decision by a studio struggling to find financing to market the film. It would cost Paramount around $50-60 million to release it into the busy fall schedule and the cash flow simply isn’t there.

Paramount CEO Brad Grey made a statement essentially saying because they’ve had such a good year they can afford to push the film and worry about paying for it later. (You can check Finke’s post for the official PR verbage.) “This is a situation facing every studio,” Grey said. Indeed. The shift is very similar to Universal shoving The Wolfman back to February 2010. Both have trailers out to audiences already. (See Shutter Island’s trailer here.)

Another source told her “that’s when Silence of the Lambs came out” back in 1991. That’s how you want to make your decisions. The release date of an 18 year old film. The only way they’re remotely related is that film was the rare exception; an early release managing to win Oscar(s) many months later. With the Academy expanding the “Best Picture” to 10 nominees, they’re pretending Shutter Island has a shot at the statue. I’m inclined to believe if Paramount thought an Oscar was possible they wouldn’t be dropping it in February to begin with.

As the Risky Business Blog pointed out, Paramount bumped The Soloist and Defiance last year, which freed up things for their Curious Case of Benjamin Button to make a run. They could be looking to do the same with Peter Jackson’s Lovely Bones and Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air. If you’re into that kind of thing, Oscar betting just got a little more interesting.

Fox Searchlight swiftly shuffled Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It into Scorsese’s old weekend. It will now open on October 2, 2009.

The move also resembles Warner Bros’ decision to push Harry Potter to this summer, though the circumstances were quite a bit different. WB was riding high on Batman dollars and a summer bow ended up being the right call for a record-breaking opening. Snatching up Potter’s old place was Twilight, which became a major hit.

Future Title ideas:

Because the trailer made us more excited for the movie then we ever though possible
Because we can't wait to see the Leo shower scene *thud*
Because its going to be so hard to wait for 2010, but for Leo its ALWAYS worth the wait.

Scroll down towards the bottom: Film features: Leonardo DiCaprio On Shutter Island | TotalFilm.com

I've never heard of the magazine but I'm guessing you can get it at Borders. I'm wondering if the magazine didn't have time to pull the article with the swift release date change. Or maybe the article mentions that SI won't be out 'til February...

Well there you go

I love how he talks about Marty So great!

Quote:
DiCaprio told Total Film magazine: "It's like a little cool learning workshop before we start to make the movie. It's a film course, you get a crash course, like an education. He's the best teacher. I'm sure that there are professors out there but I would challenge anyone to know as much about movies as him.

"I would see Marty up there against anyone in the world as far as film knowledge is concerned because it's weird. He knows not only the film but the editor and second assistant director of an obscure French film. It's weird because that's what he does, that's all he does, that's who he is. He's a man of film."

Im guessing the original House of Wax right? Not the one with Paris Hilton?
