I'm so excited to see this movie. The trailer looks amazing. I think both Leonardo and Kate will be terrific in the movie.

My question is about the Oscar rules. Since the movie is opening on December 26th, it's still eligible for Oscar nominations for 2009, right? I mean, I think the restrictions are up to December 31st midnight?

Do you guys think the December(late) opening of the film will hurt the chances of Leo and Kate and the movie being nominated for Oscars? I mean, I don't think the voters have enough time to screen the movie, perhaps, due to it's late arrival? Aren't the nominations ballots due on December 1st?

But it still qualifies for Oscar nominations, right? I keep reading some articles mention that a ton of movies are going to be released in December in order to create more Oscar buzz. So maybe it's a good thing? Or a bad thing? I'm not sure.

I might be late to the conversation, but did you guys read this review of the film? It will take me a while to look back at the four prior threads. But, someone went to see an early screening of the film. And she posted a review of it.

It MIGHT contain spoilers. But it honestly talks mostly about the actors' performances, especially Leo's, scroll down:
Dramas | Your Movie Reviews

Here are some bits on Leo's performance, with no spoilers at all:

Quote:
"A show-stopping Leonardo DiCaprio becomes Frank Wheeler - the point of view which the story is mostly told from - with remarkable power and an insight we only get from the greatest kind of actors. Allowing the audience to become fully immersed in his psyche, letting us feel everything with him.

It is a highly accomplished piece of acting from the lead actor that I cannot imagine being ignored come this award season.

Leo DiCaprio uses his expressive face to brilliant effect as Frank. He was terrific in "Aviator" , "Blood Diamond", "This Boy's Life" and others and has rightfully earned his place as one of the finest actors of his generation. Having said that, this is a whole new layer to DiCaprio that none of us have seen before. He brings a new, mature type of authentic subtlety to his craft. He doesn't resort to any big physical transformation. It's all internal. This is a new height for him, and easily the greatest acting of his career. A performance of great emotional intensity and depth that I can say without hesitation, will be remembered for generations to come.

Expect Oscar nominations for lead actor, lead actress, adapted screenplay, score, cinematography, direction and picture. With an almost sure win for DiCaprio (giving one the greatest and most layered portrayals of the last 20 years) as well as probable wins for Newman and Deakins."

Those will be the freshest performances in the voters mind which is why a December date is a good thing. But for it to start out limited...imo that's a mistake but I'm no distributor.

I love the new scenes! And the trailer is good, though I didn't understand the Swedish... I should ask my grandma to translate. Haha. She came to America from Sweden when she was 12...

Thanks so much for the article link!

Dec. 26, 2008: Nominations ballots mailed.
What does that mean exactly? Do the voters basically receive ballots already filled with options for nominations? Meaning, list of names of movies and actors for 2008? Then they just choose which ones they prefer? Or it's more like a completely blank ballot that they fill up?

Limited release might be a mistake in terms of the general public not being able to see it. But I think the actual voters usually get movie packages in mail and simply watch the films at their own time at home perhaps? Instead of them actually going to the big film premieres and such? Or am I wrong? I don't know too much about how the voters actually view the films. Why do you think the limited release is a mistake?

Thanks for the link For those of you who can't understand the Swedish commentary, this is what the woman says (it's a fairly direct translation, so I apologize for my grammar in this. ):

"11 years after Titanic, one of the most romantic and celebrated movie couples are reunited on the movie screen. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet; in Revolutionary Road, which will first be shown in theatres on January 30th next year. They once again play lovers. This time during the 50's. The two of them live with their children in a suburb, but underneath the polished and confident surface, frustration is mounting. Here, Aftonbladet TV can show you the first pictures from the movie."

I have to say I like the trailer. Getting more and more excited about this!

Those icons are so awesome! Too bad we can't use them yet, cause they are still considered spoilers and then we can't use them and I so loved the trailer! I loved this one more than the other one too, I seriously can't wait to see it!

Because of this right here: Today, according to Rules 2 and 3 of the official Academy Awards Rules, a film must open in the previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January 1 to midnight at the end of December 31, in Los Angeles County, California, to qualify.Wikipedia

idk, I'm thinking that every possibility is listed in the ballot with a check box by it. The studios, theaters, the academy, they all know way ahead of time which titles will be eligible. So I don't see a problem with all of the ballots being mailed out before the end of the year, before all of the films are released yet. I don't think any of us know for sure. This site says the Oscar voting procedure can only be assumed to be legitimate by the public and will forever be locked behind all that traditional secrecy. It's a fascinating read.

A limited release has nothing to do with the awards and everything to do with the box office. It can't do that much business opening weekend if it's only available in NY and LA. And then when it doesn't do well they'll just say that it didn't appeal to the general public. I don't want to see distributors excuses, instead I'd like them to really try here. Has there been that many films that have had limited releases then expanded their screen count that made over fifty mil?
