| Marc Blucas - "Romancing the pants off Katie Holmes in 2004's First Daughter" #1 I'll start you off with some pictures: him and his mama and this is his story: When college basketball star Marc Blucas did not make the NBA,he decided to apply to law school. The day before he was scheduled to take the Law School Admission Test, he unwound by watching Rob Reiner's courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992) and realized that what excited him about the film was not the law, but the acting. A few years later, Blucas was a television veteran with several feature films under his belt and a coveted spot in Vanity Fair's prestigious Hollywood Issue. Born Marcus Paul Blucas on January 11, 1972, the actor grew up in the small town of Girard, PA. he son of a school superintendent and an education administrator, he made his stage debut as a cupcake in his third grade class' production of Hansel and Gretel. At 6'2" tall, he was the star center on the Girard High School basketball team. An All-State athlete, Blucas averaged 20.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game and lead his team to two 2A championships. In his senior year, the team went undefeated and was ranked among the best high school basketball teams by USA Today. Blucas earned a full scholarship to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, where he majored in business with a minor in speech communication and played shooting guard and small forward for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. He competed in four NCAA tournaments and won the Murray C. Greason Sr. Athletic Academic Award and the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship in his senior year. When Blucas was not picked in the NBA draft, he joined the Manchester Giants and played pro basketball in England for one season. After starting a company that was targeted to assist athletes in endorsement and contract negotiations, he intended to go to law school but tried his hand at acting instead. Blucas had already appeared opposite Marg Helgenberger and Kris Kristofferson in the television movie Inflammable (1995), when a friend at Wake Forest informed him that the producers of the mpre pics: Whoopi Goldberg comedy Eddie (1996) were looking for a baby-faced basketball player to appear in the picture. He was a perfect fit and made his feature-film debut as a benched player on the New York Knicks. After working as the technical advisor on NBC's sports biopic Never Give Up: The Jimmy V Story (1996), Blucas was able to expand his part as an athlete in Pleasantville (1997) by coordinating the film's basketball sequences. He then dedicated himself to honing his craft through workshops and acting classes, before resurfacing as Jerry O'Connell's best friend in the NBC miniseries The '60s (1999), and as Carmen Electra's ex-beau in Jeff Abugov's The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999). He also appeared on MTV's Undressed, the WB's Clueless, and HBO's Arli$$. Blucas' breakthrough role came in the fall of 1999, when he was cast as a regular on Joss Whedon's hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Portraying Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) demon-hunting boyfriend, Riley Finn, he became a recognizable actor with a sturdy fan base. Blucas left the show in 2000 (with the promise that he would be back) in order to pursue film work. After starring in the baseball-themed Summer Catch (2001) with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jessica Biel, he began a back-to-back shooting schedule that included Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) with Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, John Sayles' The Sunshine State (2001) with Angela Bassett and Edie Falco, and Randall Wallace's We Were Soldiers (2002) with Mel Gibson and Chris Klein. He also joined the casts of the Gwyneth Paltrow comedy A View From the Top (2002), the thriller They (2002), and the period piece I Capture the Castle (2002). While still swearing to fans that he will return to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as soon as he can, Blucas signed on to director Alex Steyermark's Pray for Rock 'n' Roll, which stars Gina Gershon, Jennifer Esposito, Jane Adams, and Shelly Cole as a struggling Los Angeles-based girl band. Despite his onscreen success and his busy schedule, the actor still makes time for basketball. He plays on an adult team and serves as a referee for a Los Angeles youth league. This is Marc in Sunshine State In I Capture the Castle In Summer Catch Last but not least Buffy pics Post something nice -- I've read too many disappointing and nasty things about Marc on this site, lets keep it positive. | Some info on First Daughter First Daughter (2004) Release Date: January 9th, 2004 (wide) Release Date Note: (6/23/03) It's so much fun watching studios pace around each other, like the start of a catfight! After Fox claimed such an early January date, Warner Bros. has one-upped Fox in return, placing their movie on the *7th* of January, just two days before this movie. If things go well in production, I suspect Fox's counter move will be to take a November or December date, possibly at the last possible moment (to catch WB unaware... unless, of course, someone there reads this . Title Note: (3/13/03) Since this film is competing with another movie called First Daughter (at Warner Bros), which is also aiming for a 2004 release, it's likely that one of these films will eventually get a title change. With Warner Bros. aiming to get their movie in theaters first in January, it currently looks like this will be the one to change its title, but that's presuming that both actually get produced in time for 2004 releases as their studios are hoping. (3/15/03) Or not! Fox is also aiming for January; they've even set a date. The game is afoot. (5/8/03) That other movie is no longer calling itself 'First Daughter' (since this movie had the title first, anyway). Distributor: 20th Century Fox Production Company: Regency Enterprises (Down with Love, Man on Fire), Davis Entertainment (Garfield, I, Robot) Cast: Katie Holmes (Samantha Mackenzie), Marc Blucas, Michael Keaton (President Mackenzie); other cast not announced yet. Cast Notes: (3/13/03) When actor Jerry O'Connell (Tomcats, Kangaroo Jack) first sold his script for this movie to 20th Century Fox in 1999, he was expected to star as the young Secret Service agent, but he's since dropped out of the role (in the four years since, he's sort of grown past the part?), and will instead just serve as the film's executive producer. (3/21/03) Anderson Jones of E! Online reports that Katie Holmes may be the top contender to star (quoting Jerry O'Connell). (4/25/03) Katie Holmes has indeed signed on. Director: Forest Whitaker (Hope Floats, Waiting to Exhale) Director Notes: (3/13/03) Brian Robbins (Varsity Blues, The Perfect Score) was long attached to direct this film (like since 1999), but he's since dropped out and been replaced by Whitaker. Screenwriter: Jerry O'Connell (screenwriting debut); rewrite by Jessica Bendinger (Bring It On; cowriter of The Truth About Charlie) Similar Film Note: (7/19/02) There's another "First Daughter" project in development at Alcon Entertainment (which has a distribution deal with Warner Bros.), with a script by Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman. (3/13/03) That project, which has Mandy Moore attached to star, is now competing neck-and-neck with this one for a 2004 release. It's also worth mentioning that there was another (made-for-cable) movie called First Daughter, which aired on TNT back in 1999. Premise: When Samantha Mackenzie (Holmes), the 18-year-old daughter of the president (Keaton) of the United States, demands that she be allowed to go to college without having to be followed by a fleet of secret service agents (with their suits, sunglasses, ear-pieces and very unhip attitudes), her dad agrees... while actually assigning one (Blucas) of the youngest Secret Service agents to follow her around on campus disguised as a student anyway. The president's plan goes smoothly until the young agent falls in love with this girl he has to spend all day following, and she falls in love with him too, until... she finds out whom he really is. Can their love outlive the deception that gave it fruit? Filming: Production started on June 2nd, 2003 in Los Angeles. This project was first announced as being scheduled to start filming in 1999 for a 2000 release (but that obviously didn't happen). Genre: Comedy, Female, Romance, Teen Character Descriptions: FilmJerk.com __________________ "Look at me -- I'm dancing crazy!" "I start babbling, he starts babbling, and it's a babblefest" | |||

The first scheduled release date was April 19th, 2002, followed by August 16th, 2002; October 18th, 2002; and most recently, January 24th, 2003. Wonder why they flinched so many times? MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for language/sexual references) Running Time: 85 minutes Distributor: Miramax Films Production Company: Brillstein-Grey Entertainment (Connie and Carla, My Baby's Mama) Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow (Donna), Christina Applegate, Candice Bergen (Sally), Marc Blucas, Rob Lowe (Steve), Mike Myers (John Whitney), Jon Polito (Roy Roby), Kelly Preston, Mark Ruffalo, Stephen Tobolowsky (Frank), Jessica Capshaw, Chelsey Cole (Young Donna), Stacey Dash, Chad Everett (Jack Thorton), Duane King (Dan), Joshua Malina (Randy), Lindsay Price Cast Notes: (3/21/03) Although they had been announced as being cast when this movie was shot way back in 2000, it appears that Regis Philbin, Christian Slater and Robert Stack are not in the finished film as it's being released. It's likely that their roles were edited out as the film went through the test screening process. Perhaps they will show up on the DVD. Director: Bruno Barreto (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, Bossa Nova, One Tough Cop, Four Days in September, Carried Away) Cast Notes: 1/16/01 - Surprisingly, according to the 1/9/01 issue of The Hollywood Reporter, Mike Myers has signed on for a role. The specifics of the role aren't known. (1/18/01) Army Archerd reports in Variety that Robert Stack "reprises his terrif pilot performance from Airplane." Screenwriter: Eric Wald (feature film debut) Premise: This is the story of a young woman (Paltrow) from meager beginnings who dreams of becoming a flight attendant as her chance to see the world. | I Capture the Castle (2003) Release Date: July 11th, 2003 (LA/NY); expands to other cities at later dates Release Date Note: (4/12/03) The original limited release date for this movie was May 9th, 2003, but Samuel Goldwyn Films is now looking for a new date. (5/7/03) July 11th is that date. World Premiere: January 11th, 2003 (Palm Springs International Film Festival) (note: there had been industry screenings at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 2002) Title Note: (2/6/03) Some sources mistakenly list this film as 'I Captured the Castle', but the title is definitely 'I Capture the Castle.' MPAA Rating: R (for brief nudity) Nation of Origin: United Kingdom Running Time: 111 minutes Distributor: Samuel Goldwyn Films/Fireworks Pictures Distributor Note: (2/6/03) Back when production looked like it would happen in 2000 (instead of 2001), Miramax Films had been in negotiations to distribute this film in the U.S., but they eventually dropped out. Production Company: 50 Cannon Entertainment, BBC Films, Distant Horizons (The Dish, Perpetual Motion, Take 3 Partnership (The Heart of Me), Trademark Films Cast: Romola Garai (Cassandra Mortmain), Marc Blucas (Neil Cotton), Rose Byrne (Rose Mortmain), Henry Cavill (Stephen Colley), Sinead Cusack (Mrs. Cotton), Tara Fitzgerald (Topaz Mortmain), Bill Nighy (James Mortmain), Henry Thomas (Simon Cotton) Cast Notes: (2/6/03) I've been unable to find any casting information for Thomas, the son of the Mortmain family. Is it possible that the Stephen character (a family servant in the novel) has been expanded/changed to replace Thomas? Director: Tim Fywell (feature film debut; has directed several TV/cable projects) Director Notes: (2/6/03) Back in the late 1990s, Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) had been in talks to make this his next film after Pushing Tin. Screenwriter: Heidi Thomas (feature film debut) Screenwriter Note: (2/6/03) Back in the late 1990s, another screenwriter who had turned in an adaptation draft of the novel was Amy Jenkins (Elephant Juice). Based Upon: This movie is based upon the 1948 novel, "I Capture the Castle", by British author Dorothy "Dodie" Smith (1896-1990), who also wrote the 1956 novel "The Hundred and One Dalmatians, the Great Dog Robbery" which inspired the many Disney movies. "I Capture the Castle" was Smith's first novel, and was also adapted as a stage play. Premise: Set in the 1930s, this is the story of 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain (Garai), an aspiring writer who lives with her sister, Rose (Byrne); her brother, Thomas; her acclaimed writer of a father (Nighy) who's spent 12 years trying to write his second; and his nudist wife (Fitzgerald) in a crumbling castle in a remote region of England. When the castle's rightful heirs arrive in the form of two American brothers, Neil (Blucas) and Simon (Thomas) and their mother (Cusack), Cassandra's parents see it as a chance to improve the family's fortunes (since they're essentially squatters) by marrying off the two girls to the two wealthy young men, but the proposed pairing offs are not without conflict... Filming: Production started on September 24th, 2001 on the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom on a budget of $8 million, and wrapped up later that same fall. Here's the BBC's official announcement about the production. | The Alamo (2003) Release Date: December 25th, 2003 (wide) Release Date Note: (3/7/03) Touchstone was originally aiming for a December 12th release date, but they have now pushed it back two more weeks to Christmas Day. MPAA Rating Note: (8/20/02) Nothing's official until the MPAA sees the final cut, but Disney is definitely aiming for a PG-13, and is likely to make the editing decisions necessary to make sure it doesn't get an R. Distributor: Touchstone Pictures (Disney) Distributor Note: (1/8/03) Most of Imagine's films are distributed by Universal Pictures, so this is a bit of a departure. The only other Imagine film thus far released by Touchstone was Ransom, directed by Ron Howard (who was originally supposed to direct this film, when Touchstone signed on). Production Company: Imagine Entertainment (The Missing, Intolerable Cruelty) Cast: Dennis Quaid (Sam Houston), Jason Patric (Jim Bowie), Billy Bob Thornton (Davy Crockett), Emilio Echevarria (Generalissimo Antonio Miguel Lopez de Santa Anna), Patrick Wilson (William Barret Travis), Marc Blucas (James Butler Bonham), W. Earl Brown (President David Gouveneur Burnet), Stephen Bruton (Almerson Dickinson), Rutherford Cravens, Blue Deckert, Nick Kokich (Daniel Cloud), Jordi Molla (Juan Seguin), Matt O'Leary, Wes Studi (Chief Bowl) Cast Notes: (4/12/02) Michael Fleming of Variety reports that Howard's A Beautiful Mind star, Russell Crowe, may take a small role as part of the ensemble cast. (6/5/02) Another name for the mix is Billy Bob Thornton, who may be considered for the role of Colonel Davy Crockett, according to Lights Out. (6/27/02) That same site reports that Crowe is now signed, as is Ethan Hawke. (7/12/02) Now that it's a big question mark about whether Ron Howard will direct, Crowe's attachment is "iffy" at best. If Howard doesn't direct, you can expect Crowe to drop out. (7/19/02) IGN FilmForce reported this week that Viggo Mortensen met this week with Ron Howard, possibly about the central role of Jim Bowie. (7/31/02) With Howard's departure, the role of Sam Houston is now up for grabs again then. (10/5/02) "Variety" reported this week that talks are still active with Russell Crowe about the role of Sam Houston, but mentioned that if Crowe indeed turns it down, the top choice might then be Viggo Mortensen. (11/19/02) Crowe did indeed drop out, with the role of Sam Houston going instead to Dennis Quaid, who will be filming this movie even as he's still working on Tomorrow (where he has a larger role). Quaid, of course, was the star of Hancock's first movie, The Rookie. (12/29/02) Ethan Hawke has dropped out, replaced by newcomer Patrick Wilson. (1/8/03) The fourth and final of the largest roles, Jim Bowie, which Viggo Mortensen had once been in talks for, has gone to Jason Patric, who's currently celebrating critical praise for Narc. (1/16/03) Emilio Echevarria, who was so great as the bum/assassin Chivo in Amores Perros, has joined the cast as Generalissimo Santa Anna. It's good to see they went with an actual Mexican actor rather than... you know, some British guy like Gary Oldman or something. (1/17/03) IGN FilmForce continues to be an excellent source of news about this project with the news of a few more cast names, including Native American actor Wes Studi, who will be playing Chief Bowl. Director: John Lee Hancock (The Rookie) Director Notes: (7/7/02) Ron Howard (Ransom, Apollo 13, EdTV, Backdraft, Far and Away; his latest film before this was A Beautiful Mind) had been long attached to direct this project, but he's dropped out due to frustrations about the many production delays (he had originally wanted to make this movie as soon as possible after the successful release of A Beautiful Mind). The search for a new director has begun. (7/12/02) Michael Fleming of "Variety" reports that Ron Howard may end up directing after all, but if he doesn't, the top contender for the job is John Lee Hancock (The Rookie). (7/31/02) Fleming confirms that Hancock won the job. (2/23/03) Just to update the Ron Howard situation, the movie that he will be directing next instead of this is another western: The Missing. Screenwriter: John Sayles (Lone Star, Limbo, Eight Men Out; next up before this is Casa de Los Babys); rewrite by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Rules of Engagement, Abandon; Havoc is next) Based Upon: The true story of the "Last Stand of the Alamo" in 1836, which featured such famous historical figures as Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, and lasted for an amazing 13 days against stupendous odds (though they still lost). The story of this siege has been adapted to film many times before, the most famous of which was probably the 1960 film starring (and directed by) John Wayne. Check out this IMDb list for more. Previous Screenwriters: (10/23/01) Before Sayles signed on, other writers to work on this project were Kevin Jarre (Glory) (2000/2001) and Les Bohem (Dante's Peak) (1998/1999). Premise: Compared to Braveheart, this is the story of a small force of less than 300 men who, in 1836, fortified a fort called the Alamo in San Antonio in Texas (before it joined the United States of America), determined to defend it from the daunting power of the far larger Mexican Army, led by General Santa Anna... (3/20/02) Variety reports that the script includes details not included in the John Wayne movie, like more on the Mexican point of view, William Barret Travis' "serial marital infidelities", Jim Bowie's slave trading, and Davy Crockett's "overall political incorrectness". (Brown plays the first president of the Republic of Texas) Genre: Action, Historical, War Filming: Production started on January 27th, 2003 in Texas on a budget of $90 million (trimmed down considerably from the budget of $125 million Ron Howard was pushing for). The production built a recreation of the original Alamo/fort near a small town not far from Austin. Filming wrapped up on June 13th, 2003. Filming was originally scheduled for the summer of 2002, then for September, 2002, and then for December, 2002. At one point, Howard was considering also doing some filming in North Carolina, but those plans were scrapped. Dennis Quaid will be scheduling his role as Sam Houston in this movie to synch with his obligations to the disaster movie, The Day After Tomorrow. | Hey, I know him! I got his autograph! My aunt and uncle are flight attendants, and they saw him on a flight, and they got his autograph for me! It's upstairs. He wrote it on a napkin, it was so sweet! Apparently, according to my aunt and uncle, he's a really really nice guy. Really tall, too, my uncle says. People recognized him at the airport and they were like "Hey you were on Buffy" and he was like "Yeah, hey dude!" Just wanted to jump in and say that. | Marc Blucas Talks About "The Alamo" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" by Rebecca Murray Marc Blucas at the World Premiere of "2 Fast 2 Furious" ©Rebecca Murray - All Rights Reserved. I caught up with busy actor Marc Blucas at the World Premiere of "2 Fast 2 Furious." Though I interrupted him while he was talking to friends, Blucas was gracious enough to talk about his current projects - "The Alamo" and "I Capture the Castle." MARC BLUCAS Why didn't you come back for the “Buffy” series finale? I was in Texas doing “The Alamo.” How is “The Alamo” going? It was unbelievable. We just finished. One of the best, most professional experiences of my life. I've never been on a horse in my life. I think I'm on horse more than I am on foot in that movie. I had an unbelievable horse-chasing scene. It was one of those moments as an actor where.. You know, there's not many times where you are alone and you get an opportunity to be in a full-on action sequence by yourself. Usually you are always in scenes where there is dialogue and other actors, and you are sitting around a dinner table or sulking over your girlfriend, or something along those lines. But this was just an opportunity to - and again, not growing up on a horse - to be trained by the best. These were cowboys, these were not like LA stunt riders. They were full-on real cowboys. They finished this movie and they go back to the ranch. So it was a great group of guys. How long did you have to train? We were there for five months so in all my days off or any time I wrapped early or started late I was riding. But you know, there was a few moments where the saddlehorn wasn't my friend. We almost went flying overboard a few times (laughing). What was the set like? It was the biggest set ever built in the United States. It was on 53 acres. It was on a 2000-acre ranch so you didn't see a house, you didn't see a power line, and you didn't see a car. You couldn't help but be transported to 1835, that's just what it was. It is historically to scale. It's historically perfect. It's phenomenal. John Lee Hancock's vision for this movie, and Ron Howard/Brian Grazer, deserve unbelievable amounts of credit. I'm so excited to see this final product because, present company excluded, it was a brilliant cast and a great crew. Are kids growing up who don't know anything about the Alamo really going to learn from watching this film? I'm obviously biased, but I think this is going to be the new history lesson. I grew up in Pennsylvania where you get about 2 paragraphs about the Alamo and that's it. Instead of just brushing over a very important part of American history, you have an opportunity to watch a 2 - 2 ½ movie and get it right because it is historically perfect. We had two historians… I mean, there's still blanks we had to fill in, but between now and the John Wayne “Alamo” movie, between then and now we've had an opportunity to fill in so many blanks and learn so much more that we were able to make this a much more accurate film. And you've also got “I Capture the Castle” coming out. Yeah, that's coming out in a few weeks. That one has moved around a lot. Right. Who do you play in that movie? I play a guy named Neil. Henry Thomas and I are American brothers who inherit a castle. We go over there and meet a family who is kind of on their last legs and trying to keep it together and are out of money. It's such a talented cast. David Parfitt who produced “Shakespeare in Love” produced it. Tim Flywell directed it. We go over there and we meet the daughters of the family and romantic turmoil ensues. Everybody falls in love with the wrong person. It's a gorgeous, great little movie. I'm really proud to be a part of it. So if you hadn't been filming “The Alamo,” would you have been back for the “Buffy” finale? I don't know. I know that Joss [Whedon] knew that I was there. And so whether or not that was in the mix or not, I have no idea. I would have loved to have been a part of it. It was a thrill to have been a part of that show and one of those things that will always be a feather in my cap because it's so well respected. I was blessed to be on it. | this is from info posted at Riley/Marc Blucas - Buffyguide.com The Players Riley Finn / Marc Blucas Riley's Bio Riley Finn was born and raised in Huxley, a small farm town in Iowa. Not a whole lot is known about his history, but he was a Psychology graduate student at UC Sunnydale, a teacher's assistant to the late Professor Maggie Walsh, and Special Agent 75329 in the Initiative, a mysterious military operation which captures and experiments on demons. Riley is as sweet and affable as they come, but can also take charge and hold his own in a fight, due to his Initiative training. He likes to take long drives, can't dance, and likes cheese. He was Buffy's last boyfriend, and had trouble dealing with the fact that his girlfriend was stronger than him and had a bigger and better demon-killing track record than him. As Buffy became distracted with her growing dedication to her Slayer calling and with family issues, Riley felt he was unimportant to Buffy, and decided to rejoin the military, leaving Sunnydale and Buffy for good. He returned for one episode in Season 6, needing Buffy's help with a mission, and brought with him another demon-fighting agent — his wife, Sam. Marc's Bio Marc Blucas, 31, was born and raised in the small town of Girard, Pennsylvania. His life-long dream was to be a basketball player — he played all through high school, and played at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, though he didn't gain much attention there until his junior year. He ended up winning the Murray Greason Award, which honors the individual who's sacrificed the most to the team, and the Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarship, both in 1994. Unfortunately, he wasn't drafted to the NBA after college, though he did play for the Manchester Giants in England for a year. He returned to the U.S. to enter Law School, but realized the night before his LSAT (Law School Admission Test) that he wanted to be an actor. He'd always thought that the movie A Few Good Men made him want to be a lawyer, but when he watched it again that night, he realized that it made him want to be an actor. He started auditioning, and got a few bit parts in movies such as Eddie and Pleasantville (see links below for a complete filmography). Eventually, he landed a Buffy audition, and even though he auditioned with a severe back injury and thought it went horribly, he landed the job — and then became a regular within half a season. Marc loves food — virtually everything but raw onions; his favorite movies include A Few Good Men, Top Gun, and Usual Suspects ("I'm a sap... I'll site and cry at Rambo); his favorite TV shows are The Dukes of Hazzard, A-Team, and ER; his favorite book is Where the Read Fern Grows ("I read it in the eighth grade and it stuck with me"); his favorite color is blue; and his favorite NBA team is the San Antonio Spurs — a friend of his plays for them. He listens to everything from Stevie Wonder to Creed to Bon Jovi to Pearl Jam, and if he could be a superhero, he'd be Superman. | Thanks for all the Marc info. He was my favorite on Buffy. It's nice to read a thread that isn't constantly talking about how much he sucks. I can't wait to see his new movies. __________________ We decide what our lives are going to be. Things happen to us, but it's our reactions that matter. | |||

| The First Daughter Showdown: It’s Katie Holmes vs. Mandy Moore Written 04-23-2003 by ChrisFaile Motion PicturesFilmJerk.com has learned that Katie Holmes ("Dawson's Creek," WB's "Phone Booth") has officially signed onto 20th Century Fox’s “First Daughter,” playing the 18-year-old daughter of the President of the United States. This sets up a showdown between this production and Warner Bros.’ title of the same name, starring Mandy Moore…which also focuses on the President’s daughter. In the 20th Century Fox film, Holmes plays first daughter Samantha Mackenzie, whose life in the spotlight begins to take its toll. Excited about her first year away at the University of Virginia, she demands to be allowed to go to college without having to be followed by a fleet of omnipresent secret service agents. She is elated when her father reluctantly agrees, and the chance to finally be on her own. But, without her knowing, her father assigns one of the youngest Secret Service agents to follow her around on campus disguised as a student anyway. Delighted with her boy-crazy, fun-loving, in-your-face roommate, Mia, Samantha is discovering the joys of college when she falls fast and hard for her gorgeous R.A., James Lansome. However, she feels betrayed when she learns James is none other than a Secret Service agent, put in place by her well-meaning, but overly protective dad. According to casting details, Samantha is described as “the all-American teenager, spirited, bright, beautiful, engaging and well-liked.” Producers are still looking to cast the roles of Mia Von Getz (the roommate), Lansome, President MacKenzie and Liz Pappas—although sources indicate producers are close to inking actors for the latter three parts. Further descriptions of the four roles are: Mia Von Getz: Also 18 years old, she is Samantha’s college roommate. Described as a “fun-loving whirlwind,” Von Getz is a middle-class girl, the youngest child of divorced psychotherapists, who is slightly offbeat. The casting notes describe her as “overweight or not traditionally beautiful.” Wanting the typical college experience of parties and boys, she has a passion for just about everything in life. Mia does not suffer the presence of the Secret Service easily, convinced her social future may be mortally contaminated if she hangs out with Sam too much. Used to being the center of attention, Mia is beginning to resent the fact that Sam garners attention simply because of her father. As she says in the script, “ “I’m someone people like hanging out with. And who are you, Sam? You have genetic limelight.” In the end, though, Mia is more than appropriately dazzled when Samantha flies her to the White House in Air Force One. James Lansome: A gorgeous young man in his mid-twenties, he is described as being intelligent, caring, and articulate. Clearly smitten with Samantha, he is a Secret Service agent posing as the dorm R.A. As much as he’d liked to pursue a relationship with Samantha, he knows the idea is an impossibility. Utterly charming, with a winning and warm personality, he quickly captures Samantha’s heart. Crushed when he must inadvertently reveal the truth to Samantha, he is soon transferred to a post in Idaho. Given some time to think, the love-struck James grapples with the question of whether there are things in life more important than his career. President MacKenzie: Aged 40 to 45, he is the President of the United States and Samantha’s dad. His job as leader of the free world has to take a back seat to being the father of a headstrong teenager at times. Caught up in the rigors of an election year, he’s not exactly thrilled by Samantha’s antics at college, but remains admirably composed and supportive. Liz Pappas: The 40-ish Deputy Press Secretary, Liz is a terrific lady. She’s sharp, no-nonsense, efficient and Samantha’s best pal in the White House. Clearly sad to see Samantha leave for college, she tells the First Daughter, “Without you in Washington, it’s just a job. It’s going to suck.” Later, when Sam gets into some scrapes, Liz is there to act as mediator between Samantha and a very upset President. This is a supporting part, appearning in only 5 scenes. Production for the 20th Century Fox project begins in Los Angeles on June 2. Forest Whitaker (a well-reknowned actor who also has been beind the camera for “Hope Floats” and “Waiting to Exhale”) directs from a script written by Jerry O'Connell. Quoting O'Connell, Anderson Jones of E! Online reported that Holmes was a top contender for the lead role earlier this week. Bearing a strong resemblance in concept, the Warner Bros. project focuses on the 18-year-old daughter (Moore) of the president of the United States. Tired of being followed around every moment of every day (sound familiar?), she ditches her Secret Service handlers and sets out on a romantic road trip through Europe with her boyfriend. At press time, both projects are targeting a January 2004 release. “First Daughter” (20th Century Fox) Scorecard Producer: John Davis Director: Forest Whitaker Casting Director: Denise Chamian Start Date: June 2, 2003 Location: Los Angeles Production Company: New Regency Productions __________________ "Look at me -- I'm dancing crazy!" | Ah, yes, Marc. I LOVED him when he was Riley on Buffy, and I especially want to see his turn as Neil in I Capture the Castle - it's one of my favourite books ever, so I'm looking foward to that. Marc is an absolute sweetie, I've had the honour of talking to him while he posted at the Buffy Bronze, and he's ADORABLE. I also wrote to him once, almost right when he first appeared on Buffy, and he sent me a personalized autographed picture. He's a darling, and I'm glad he's getting more popular. He was there and posting with Christian Kane on the Buffy Bronze a long time ago - they're both sweethearts, and I nearly died when he started talking to the fans.
