Snyder will be toning his movie - which had been previously described as a hard R - down, the director insists he can get away with what he wants in a PG-13. 'If you can make Taken PG-13, you can make this movie PG-13,' he told me. 'That's what I believe. Because it's more fantastic. No one really dies in the movie.'
'I think Sucker Punch is a smart movie,' he said. 'It absolutely is challenging, and it's fudgeing hardcore. [A]t the end she gets... it's dark! But it's fudgeing actiony like nobody's business. We hope the action we're creating is off the charts, and it's not stupid.'
That action, while it may be against fantasy creatures (or WWI soldiers, Snyder revealed. The imaginary worlds seem to be all over the place in a very cool way), is rooted in reality. Says Snyder, 'I like fight choreography and I like being able to see what's happening in action. When the girls are fighting, [like] they're on their way to kill a baby dragon, they've killed all of these orc-like creatures and they're entering a door [and] it's this classic, real Navy SEAL style room clearing. They have machine guns but they're fighting mythic creatures, impossible creatures. The hand to hand stuff is all brutal, because Damon [Caro] did all the [fights] in Bourne and it has that vibe to it.'
Director Zack Snyder, the eye-popping filmmaker behind “300” and “Watchmen,” has hired none other than Vanessa Hudgens to star in his next action flick, “Sucker Punch.” But without any real action-hero experience, was it just a matter of assuming the singing/dancing “High School Musical” star can do anything that’s physically demanding if she’s already twirled around a dance floor with Troy Bolton?
“No, I didn’t even look at it that way at first,” Snyder explained, echoing Hudgens’ own excitement for the film about a group of institutionalized young girls using fantasy to escape. “She rehearsed, she did the audition for the scene. I wasn’t sure at first – [the casting people] were like ‘Oh, Vanessa’s coming’ and I was ‘Oh, okay - that sounds cool’ but I didn’t know what to think.”
“Then I saw the tape and I literally went ‘Wow, she’s good,’” Snyder recalled. “She’s really good. Then I talked to her about what she’d have to do.”
What Hudgens has to do is join co-stars Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung and Abbie Cornish in intense physical training. And then put her “HSM” past behind her as she kicks some ass, King Leonidas-style.
“You’re going to see her shooting machine guns, fighting, beating the sh-t out of people,” Snyder, who has Blu-ray releases coming for the action-packed “Watchmen” and “300” in the weeks to come, revealed. “It’s funny - we sat her down for her physical evaluation, and she was really athletic. She’s a dancer, so all the choreography is gonna be fun for her.”
“It’ll allow her to stretch herself and do whatever she wants, and not be too exposed by the movie - but also, on the other hand, do things that people have never seen her do,” he added, saying that since Hudgens isn’t the film’s main star, she’ll have enough freedom to experiment a bit. “She has a big part, but she’s not the center of the movie.”
It also didn’t hurt Hudgens that Snyder knew casting her would make him, like, the coolest dad ever. “My daughter is about to turn 16… I have another daughter who’s 14; Eli is 12 and Autumn is 12,” the filmmaker said with a grin. “They love ‘High School Musical.’ They try and be cool about [their dad hanging out with Vanessa]; they try and be like ‘Yeah, whatever.’ But the truth is: They’re really into it.” Shooting for “Sucker Punch” will start soon, with a 2011 release currently in Snyder’s sights.

Jamie Chung and Jena Malone have snagged starring roles in "Sucker Punch!" Zack Snyder's all-female action fantasy for Warner Bros.
Chung and Malone join Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Abbie Cornish in the pic, which Snyder is directing and producing with his Cruel & Unusual Films partner, wife Deborah Snyder.
Set in the 1950s, "Sucker" centers on a girl confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternate reality to hide from the pain and in that world begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out.
Several actors have been in talks and negotiations to star in the movie, including Amanda Seyfried, Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone, but have fallen away because of scheduling conflicts.
Chung, replacing Stone, plays Amber, a country girl with a big heart. Malone, taking Wood's part, plays Cornish's younger sister. Both characters are inmates.
Chung, repped by Gersh and Kritzer Levine Wilkins Entertainment, next appears in Summit's horror remake of "Sorority Row" and the ensemble indie drama "Burning Palms."
Gersh-repped Malone next appears in the Iraqi war drama "The Messenger."

The $100 million budgeted film for Warner Bros. is scheduled to begin production in June. Zack Snyder has already piqued the interest of his slavish dude audiences by saying he's casting Amanda Seyfried in Sucker Punch, a movie about chicks who break out of an insane asylum. But just wait until you hear who else he's trying to cast. Seyfried is pretty much locked down, and now Snyder and company have offers out to Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, Emma Stone, and Vanessa Hudgens.
This is coming from Entertainment Weekly, which isn't saying just how close any of those woman are to actually taking the part. In the movie Seyfried would play the lead character, Baby Doll, a young woman who fantasizes about busting out of the insane asylum and casts her fellow inmates in the fantasy. Because it's Zack Snyder-- and also because the premise sounds totally bananas-- all kinds of gonzo action is guaranteed to follow. I for one can't wait to see Vanessa Hudgens launch a roundhouse kick.
Who Will Be Throwing a SUCKER PUNCH in Zack Snyder's Next Movie?
It's been a while since a good ensemble cast of women got together for a movie that wasn't about how women relate to men. The best we get is crap like "The Craft" and "Bad Girls" and while I'm holding out hope for "Bitch Slap" later this year, the guy who may lead the feminist charge could end up being Zack Snyder of all people. His next film (after "Guardians of Ga'Hoole"), "Sucker Punch" sounds great (click here to watch Snyder's interview with Steve where he talks about the film). Now it sounds like it's getting a great cast on board, or at the very least, a cast that can surprise you.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Evan Rachel Wood are all in talks to star in the film. It also provides a slightly more detailed synopsis of the plot:
Set in the 1950s, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. Waves of "Pan's Labyrinth" are washing over me with that synopsis and it feels amazing. But what of the cast? Seyfried would play the lead with Hudgens, Cornish, and Wood playing her fellow inmates who also travel in that alternate reality. To give you an even better sense of the film, Hudgens' character is called "Blondie", Cornish is "Sweet Pea", and Wood is "Rocket". Again, this a whole heap of awesome.
If I have one minor reservation, it's Wood. Aside from starring in two films I outright loathe ("Thirteen" and "Across the Universe") and I thought she was the weakest aspect of "The Wrestler". I don't want to dislike her so I'm hoping that the next film I see her in (presumably Woody Allen's "Whatever Works") I'll begin to get excited for what she'll do in this film.
UPDATE: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Emma Stone is also in talks to star in the film, which would be another great addition to this cast.
Okay, not much but this is a recent video interview with Josh, I assume just before Paramount passed. The only new thing is that he says that Vanessa has agreed to do it so if a studio picks it up, it will be a go. It appears she's the only one attached so far so they're using her to pitch it to the studios.
Like I said earlier, Lorenzo has a first-look deal with paramount so he always has to approach them first with any project, and going by the developments there, it might end up being a good thing they passed. Thinking about it, he is producing Salt with Angelina Jolie for Sony/Columbia, this means that Paramount passed on it for him to approach Sony and for Sony to pick it up. I'm hoping WB or Fox or even CBS will pick up D@17.
Vanessa is getting good press with just Beastly filming which hopefully will spike up as soon as we start getting sneak peeks from SP. Hopefully, developments will be sooner than later.
Believe me, I share your frustration and excitement. The reason for my silence is that I'm not really allowed to say anything more at the moment. However, progess has been made since I did that interview. Things are looking good. There's a big meeting coming up next week with a certain studio. Hopefully I will have something to announce then. After a few rumors made the rounds, it turned out that foxy young Disney thing Vanessa Hudgens (best known for HIGH SCHOOL MUSICALs and naked photos) wasn't actually going to be part of the TWILIGHT sequel. Does she have a potential franchise of her own in her future?
Possibly, but right now it's just more rumor -- but at least it comes from a better source. According to comic creator Josh Howard, his Viper Comics title DEAD @ 17 is in the works as a feature film.
As Howard mentions during a recent podcast with Comics on Comics (via LITG), producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (TRANSFORMERS, GI JOE) has a movie in the works based on the comic property, and they're pursuing Ms. Hudgens for the project. Mike Dougherty (X2, SUPERMAN RETURNS) is working on the script.

I reckon there was some credibility to the claims that Vanessa Hudgens auditioned for New Moon and I fear she only received the knockback when a disclaimer about her casting went public, the poor thing. All’s well that end’s well, however, and it seems like she’s now on the list for something a whole lot more interesting.
Rich Johnston at Lying in the Gutters linked to a Comics on Comics interview with Josh Howard, creator of the Dead @ 17 comics. In the interview, Howard mentioned that Lorenzo di Bonaventura was producing a cinema adaptation of his series and that Vanessa Hudgens was being pursued to star. Better still, he also spilled that Mike Dougherty is writing the screenplay.
Aside from Lex Luthor’s truly underwhelming “evil plot” (I know Lex has a thing about real estate, but come on) I think Superman Returns, which Dougherty co-wrote with Dan Harris, was really very good indeed and their previous collaboration with Bryan Singer on X2 is amongst the greatest films of the superhero genre. Dougherty’s last project was the much hyped but seldom seen Trick’r Treat, a cruel victim of Warner Bros. seemingly indecipherable distribution illogic. Seeing as he graduated to director there with an impressively increased reputation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him taking the reigns on Dead @ 17 as well.
The comic’s premise sounds eminently franchisable: It’s Buffy meets Nikita as as 17 year old Nara Kilday (er… interesting name) is killed, resurrected and set to the task of slaughtering evil monsters and the like. I haven’t read a single panel of the thing so maybe I’m missing the new idea.
Nara has a friend called Hazy Foss, by the way. Where did Howard get these names from?
Judging Ms. Hudgens’ acting abilities on the strength of the projects she’s been shackled too so far would be cruel. It isn’t her fault that all she’s been shoveled little more than lowest common denominator dreck and films that have been less artistic endeavour than money laundering exercise. If she continues in this vein now that she’s being hunted for stuff at least one rung up the ladder, then I’ll change my idea of who is to blame.

Moviegoes won't see the mad-house girls of "Sucker Punch" until 2011, but director Zack Snyder has comely young inmates -- including Abbie Cornish, right -- in training already.
After the bloody hyper-reality of "300" and the alternate-universe intensity of "Watchmen," filmmkaer Snyder is ramping up for "Sucker Punch," a surreal action film about a young woman who hopes to brak out of an pyschiatric unit with the help of the her four new wild-child friends, who may just be in her head.
The stars of the film are Emily Browning (“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”), Jamie Chung ("Dragonball Evolution") Jena Malone (“Into the Wild”), Cornish (“Stop-Loss”) and, joltingly, Disney's very own Vanessa Hudgens of "High School Musical" fame.
Cornish, who plays the leader-of-the-pack Sweetpea, said that Snyder (below, left) has the starlets working out like Spartan warriors.
“Sometimes," she said, "I forget I’m an actor. We’re training so hard." How hard? She said their five-day-a-week morning is “doing martial fighting, swords and choreography -- just kicking butt with guns and everything imaginable. And then we do a training session in the afternoon. It’s like being a stunt person, really, not an actor at all. “
Zack Cornish has been generating some Oscar buzz with her radiant turn as Fanny Brawne in Jane Campion’s "Bright Star," which weaves a tale out of the 19th century romance between Brawne and doomed British poet John Keats. Don't expect any corsets in "Sucker Punch," though, which sounds like some high-octane mash-up of "Fight Club" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
"The film is a dream in a way, “ explains Cornish, which is set in the 1960s. “It operates on three levels. A reality, then a sub-reality where the psych ward world shifts into this strange high-roller's brothel. Then there’s this dream world where it goes into these crazy action sequences that are totally removed from time and space.”
Cornish added that It’s still Sweatpea in the dream world, but “just all of a sudden she becomes a crazy killing machine and she’s decked out in a really cool outfit.“
