Vanessa Hudgens Matriculates to Trial Mon., Nov. 10, 2008 3:52 PM PST by Natalie Finn INFdaily.com Her senior was pretty fab, thanks to Troy and all, but Vanessa Hudgens' post-grad plans aren't all singing and dancing. A judge has set a May 11, 2009, trial date in the lawsuit accusing the High School Musical star and her father of backing out of a deal with a guy named Johnny Vieira and his Johnny on the Spot Productions. In court today, the Hudgens family's attorney told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Malcolm Mackey that they were not interested in mediation and would rather take this beef to trial. The defendants did leave the door open for future mediation if so desired. Per the suit, Vanessa and dad Greg broke a contract she signed as a minor, and they still owe Vieira about $70,000 in court-ordered compensation. The producer wants a thorough audit of Hudgens' finances and $5 million in damages.

With Watchmen bowing Friday, director Zack Snyder is already busy prepping his next endeavor, the 1960s-based action fantasy Sucker Punch, based on his own script. Snyder is still putting together his all-female cast, but sources say Amanda Seyfried is in negotiations to play the lead role of Baby Doll, a young woman who has been committed to an insane asylum and fantasizes about escaping with the help of her fellow inmates, who take on fantastical roles in her mind. Offers are out to a slew of young actresses to fill out those roles, including Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, and Emma Stone. The $100 million budgeted film for Warner Bros. is scheduled to begin production in June. Says Snyder, who is also producing the film with his wife Deborah Snyder, "I already did the all-male cast with 300, so I'm doing the opposite end of the spectrum."

Snyder is also producing with his Cruel & Unusual Films partner and wife Deborah Snyder. Set in the 1950s, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Snyder, who co-wrote the script with Steve Shibuya, has described the fantasy world as " 'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns," blending such elements as dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. Seyfried would play Babydoll, the institutionalized girl. If deals are completed, the rest would play Seyfried's fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality. Hudgens would play a character named Blondie, Cornish would play Sweet Pea, and Wood would play Rocket. The shooting schedule is still being worked out. Hudgens, repped by WMA and Untitled, is best known for her work in the "High School Musical" franchise while CAA-repped Cornish's credits include "Stop-Loss" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

Ideal Sucker Punch Cast Is Revealed By Katey Rich: 2009-03-03 21:13:37 Zack Snyder has already piqued the interest of his slavish dude audiences by saying he's casting Amanda Seyfried in Sucker Punch, a movie about chicks who break out of an insane asylum. But just wait until you hear who else he's trying to cast. Seyfried is pretty much locked down, and now Snyder and company have offers out to Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, Emma Stone, and Vanessa Hudgens. This is coming from Entertainment Weekly, which isn't saying just how close any of those woman are to actually taking the part. In the movie Seyfried would play the lead character, Baby Doll, a young woman who fantasizes about busting out of the insane asylum and casts her fellow inmates in the fantasy. Because it's Zack Snyder-- and also because the premise sounds totally bananas-- all kinds of gonzo action is guaranteed to follow. I for one can't wait to see Vanessa Hudgens launch a roundhouse kick.

Who Will Be Throwing a SUCKER PUNCH in Zack Snyder's Next Movie? It's been a while since a good ensemble cast of women got together for a movie that wasn't about how women relate to men. The best we get is crap like "The Craft" and "Bad Girls" and while I'm holding out hope for "Bitch Slap" later this year, the guy who may lead the feminist charge could end up being Zack Snyder of all people. His next film (after "Guardians of Ga'Hoole"), "Sucker Punch" sounds great (click here to watch Snyder's interview with Steve where he talks about the film). Now it sounds like it's getting a great cast on board, or at the very least, a cast that can surprise you. The Hollywood Reporter says that Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Evan Rachel Wood are all in talks to star in the film. It also provides a slightly more detailed synopsis of the plot: Set in the 1950s, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Waves of "Pan's Labyrinth" are washing over me with that synopsis and it feels amazing. But what of the cast? Seyfried would play the lead with Hudgens, Cornish, and Wood playing her fellow inmates who also travel in that alternate reality. To give you an even better sense of the film, Hudgens' character is called "Blondie", Cornish is "Sweet Pea", and Wood is "Rocket". Again, this a whole heap of awesome. If I have one minor reservation, it's Wood. Aside from starring in two films I outright loathe ("Thirteen" and "Across the Universe") and I thought she was the weakest aspect of "The Wrestler". I don't want to dislike her so I'm hoping that the next film I see her in (presumably Woody Allen's "Whatever Works") I'll begin to get excited for what she'll do in this film. UPDATE: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Emma Stone is also in talks to star in the film, which would be another great addition to this cast.

Snyder has called the film “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, an R-Rated $100 million budgeted 1950’s-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Seyfried) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Hudgens (”Blondie”), Cornish (”Sweet Pea”), Wood (”Rocket”), and Stone would play Seyfried’s fellow inmates who also travel into the alternate reality. I don't want to get all gushy and fangirly, but this might just be a film for the girls who identified with this. It might even be a film that embodies the Bechdel Rule. It's an R-rated, $100 million dollar action movie set in the 1950s, and it centers on a girl imprisoned in a mental institution by her evil stepfather. Due to be lobotomized, she loses herself in a fantasy world where she dreams about escaping with her fellow inmates. Or, as Snyder describes it, it's "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns." Entertainment Weekly reports that Amanda Seyfried is in negotiations to play the lead, and that Evan Rachel Wood, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Emma Stone are also in talks. Production doesn't start until fall, so we could see a few of these faces shift, but I'm liking the line up so far. But seriously, how cool is this? It's the exact opposite of the chick flicks we've been inundated with of late -- and while I don't think violence and ass-kicking automatically make a film feminist, it's a step in the right direction. Even Snyder is cheekily aware of that: "I already did the all-male cast with 300, so I'm doing the opposite end of the spectrum." After a few rumors made the rounds, it turned out that foxy young Disney thing Vanessa Hudgens (best known for HIGH SCHOOL MUSICALs and naked photos) wasn't actually going to be part of the TWILIGHT sequel. Does she have a potential franchise of her own in her future? Possibly, but right now it's just more rumor -- but at least it comes from a better source. According to comic creator Josh Howard, his Viper Comics title DEAD @ 17 is in the works as a feature film. As Howard mentions during a recent podcast with Comics on Comics (via LITG), producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (TRANSFORMERS, GI JOE) has a movie in the works based on the comic property, and they're pursuing Ms. Hudgens for the project. Mike Dougherty (X2, SUPERMAN RETURNS) is working on the script. DEAD @ 17 (soon jumping to Image Comics) involves a murdered teenage girl who returns from the grave, a prophesied savior who uses her new abilities to fight evil. While looking hot, of course.

The story is pretty much everywhere, so I'm not going to link to it. But in a recent interview, I was asked about the status of the potential Dead @ 17 film. I was very careful about how I worded my response, but the whole thing has taken on a life of its own. Yes, Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Michael Dougherty are involved, and yes, an actress has been approached, but that's pretty much it for the moment. It's still early, nothing is set in stone. Believe me - I've been down this road a dozen times before. Names have been attached before only to have it all fall apart at the last minute. I'm pretty confident in where things stand at the moment, but we'll see.

Vanessa Hudgens Dead @ 17, Mike Dougherty Scripting Her Demise And Resurrection I reckon there was some credibility to the claims that Vanessa Hudgens auditioned for New Moon and I fear she only received the knockback when a disclaimer about her casting went public, the poor thing. All’s well that end’s well, however, and it seems like she’s now on the list for something a whole lot more interesting. Rich Johnston at Lying in the Gutters linked to a Comics on Comics interview with Josh Howard, creator of the Dead @ 17 comics. In the interview, Howard mentioned that Lorenzo di Bonaventura was producing a cinema adaptation of his series and that Vanessa Hudgens was being pursued to star. Better still, he also spilled that Mike Dougherty is writing the screenplay. Aside from Lex Luthor’s truly underwhelming “evil plot” (I know Lex has a thing about real estate, but come on) I think Superman Returns, which Dougherty co-wrote with Dan Harris, was really very good indeed and their previous collaboration with Bryan Singer on X2 is amongst the greatest films of the superhero genre. Dougherty’s last project was the much hyped but seldom seen Trick’r Treat, a cruel victim of Warner Bros. seemingly indecipherable distribution illogic. Seeing as he graduated to director there with an impressively increased reputation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him taking the reigns on Dead @ 17 as well. The comic’s premise sounds eminently franchisable: It’s Buffy meets Nikita as as 17 year old Nara Kilday (er… interesting name) is killed, resurrected and set to the task of slaughtering evil monsters and the like. I haven’t read a single panel of the thing so maybe I’m missing the new idea. Nara has a friend called Hazy Foss, by the way. Where did Howard get these names from? Judging Ms. Hudgens’ acting abilities on the strength of the projects she’s been shackled too so far would be cruel. It isn’t her fault that all she’s been shoveled little more than lowest common denominator dreck and films that have been less artistic endeavour than money laundering exercise. If she continues in this vein now that she’s being hunted for stuff at least one rung up the ladder, then I’ll change my idea of who is to blame.
