Vanessa Fanfiction #96: because happy Fanfic Authors birthday week!!

For all those new to the fanfiction scene, below is a list of stories that are considered to be of high quality and “must reads” to start you off on your journey through the wonderful land of fanfiction.

The list is broken up into the relevant categories, and then further broken up into groups depending on whether the story has been completed, in the process of being written (and the frequency of updates/last time updated), or just oneshots.

I would like to point out a few things about the following list of stories.
  1. All stories below are there because we think they are of high quality and are ones you should definitely check out. Regardless of how old the story is or how frequently the story is updated; they’re all good stories, so don’t just skip over all the stories that aren’t frequently updated, because I promise that you will be missing out on an amazing story. We wouldn't have listed the story if it wasn't.
  2. Several of the stories have a strike through them. This means that at the current time the story is unavailable to be read, but will be up again at some point.
  3. Whilst the list below is quite extensive, that does not mean that it contains every single high quality, “must read” story out there. You might find that you favour different writing styles to the ones listed below, in which case I’d suggest that the best way to find other stories you might like is to check out the favourite authors and stories listed by the authors that you do like. There are other ways of finding good stories, so don’t think that just because the story isn’t listed below, that it isn’t a good story.
  4. Some of the stories that were previously listed in the opening post (OP) have been deleted because they no longer existed on the server they had been posted on, or led to an inconclusive place (i.e. FanFiction.Net deleted the story, it led to a locked LiveJournal page, so on and so forth). No offense is made to be taken from the deletion. If you remember a story that was previously listed and have seen posted it elsewhere, share it with the thread, and further steps can be taken from there.

But enough with that, happy reading everyone! Hope to see you all dropping by with comments about your favourite stories soon!

Love this title.

As A Bitch:
Spoiler:
These two just need to release all that sexual tension already.

Untouchable:
Spoiler:
Demi is a freaking bitch. That’s just cruel. This Gabi is already messed up, and Demi just made it so much worse.

I feel so bad for Gabriella. Things were finally going to get better for her, and now Demi has screwed that up.

As It Seems:
Spoiler:
Loved this chapter, and not just because we got sexy time.

10 Little Things:
Spoiler:
Aw, that end bit with Troy taking a mental picture was adorable.

Thanks for the new thread, Kirsten. And happy birthday, I hope you've had a good day.

As It Seems
Spoiler:
I loved this chapter. The tension felt right, her jealousy about the neighbour, his macho male natural instincts, the fight, her slapping him, the sex, and the way she was tracing his scar afterwards. I was glad they had the talk, and I like that he was concerned that his disappearance is something that would affect his relationship with Alex. I love this Troy, but I do still want him to feel a bit guilty - I know I shouldn't but it was 18 months and I know he had a good(ish) excuse for just watching her try and hold it together thinking he was dead, mourning him, but...I don't know, it's probably just me but...you know? I'm glad that Gabriella has forgiven him and that they are moving on because I want them to be happy and together and she deserves it, but despite that I really don't object to him indulging in a little dose of the self flagellation on occasion for his actions.

Does anyone remember a fic that was like You've Got Mail - in fact, it was almost exactly like you've got mail complete with Troy and Chad seeing her at the coffee shop, the guess why the username was what it was and the park scene? I've been looking for it and for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.

Strangely... I don't think I've read that one Marianne.

Though I tend to have issues with fics that are based on movies, and are pretty much exactly the same as them, so I tend to avoid them.

Thanks anyway guys. Yeah, it was almost exactly like You've Got Mail, only minus the boats and the shops (I think). It was ages ago I read it, so it might be gone.

There is definitely a problem with fics based on films I think - so many of them are just changing characters names without any degree of adaptation, which is a shame because if you know the film you know exactly what is coming but I suppose it's a hazard if you do that sort of fic - very few people want to change it up or just take a premise, which is a shame.

I agree.

I really like when stories are kinda based on a movie, but then go in a different direction.
Spoiler:
Like in Mami, it's based off of catch and release with the same tension, he's a photographer and a few turns (like him cheating on her), but ultimately, the story is COMPLETELY different and one of Diana's own.

Yeah - I love when they take an idea and make it different.

Spoiler:
I had actually no idea that Mami was based on a similar concept to a film - I will definitely have to check out the film now though since I loved Mami so much.

It was no secret that I wanted a Time Traveller's Wife TG fic, and I find two and basically the both of them are The Time Traveller's Wife with Troy and Gabriella instead of Claire & Henry, right down to the age difference. Don't even get me started on vampire HSM fics...as a supernatural/ghosty fangirl I would kill for some really good fics of that style but so many seem to be Twilight, almost word for word right down to the characterisations and locations.

There was this really awesome one I read though that was like a reverse Mr Destiny - where instead of Troy wondering what would happen if he had success, it was like what would have happened if he wasn't as successful and had made different decisions. That was a really great spin on that sort of idea so it can be done brilliantly but it must be quite hard as a writer when you are taking an established plot and trying to adapt it and make it your own.

Marianne always starts the best fic convos

I think a Time Traveler's wife fic would be really difficult to spin in an author's own fashion. The idea is so unique that it would be so hard to change without losing the magic of the original story.

It's probably a sign I read too much fic I think.

I agree, it's hard to spin it - but I think things like characters ages, their first meeting etc is things that can be changed while keeping the premise the same. I don't know, as a writer I've never adapted a film or book's plot so I don't actually know how difficult or easy it is tbh, but I imagine it must be very easy to fall into the trap of just copying which is why I would have thought you would be looking for markers within it that you could change to make it unique to you. Not even big things - little things that you can bridge the existing plot around.

I think it's something I would like to try one day, more as an exercise than anything else because it must be hard as hell to do. People who do it well definitely deserve a lot of kudos because I just think it must be one of the hardest things to do in fanfic writing.

You could never read too much fic

It's hard. As someone who attempted it once, it was tough to stay original. For me, the first chapter was the hardest because it was pretty spot on, but eventually, when the plot developed, it got a bit easier

You should definietly try it. I'd be interested to see WHAT you'd pick and how'd you spin it.
