Who is SA5M?
The 5 is silent. Sa5m is 15 years old, dressed down in black jeans and t-shirt,
with hair strategically hiding her face from the world, she is a loner, one of the
school’s outsiders, constantly seen with a book in hand. Smart, with a sense of
humor and a lot of disdain for her shallow peers, Sam is a former stutterer and
now speaks slowly and deliberately. She teams up with Will on a class project,
and the two quickly discover they have a lot in common. Their friendship
eventually takes the shape of a burgeoning romance. Brought on board
as the lead singer for the band Will is managing, Sa5m emerges from her
cocoon, demonstrating grit and commitment to perfection…

Here is my review, sorry it is so long, but I just LOOOOVE BANDSLAM SO MUCH!

How do I get a spoiler box though?

So... I went to the 7 p.m. showing of Bandslam tonight. First off, how amazing is it to finally say .."I saw Bandslam" ...I mean we've been waiting for what seems like forever! It looked like there were about 30-35 people. I tried to count, and look everywhere, but I kinda had to limit my staring and leave people alone. There were some small groups of families, a few mid-age women alone, a few old couples, a few groups of 12-15 year old girls, and there were also about 4 different groups of teen age boys. One of them whistled at Vanessa during it. hah! They seemed to genuinely like all the music, were quite amused, laughed aloud many times, and seemed to enjoy the film more than anyone there. Fan boys ftw! There was 1 group of very young looking kids, with no parent supervision , and they were annoying and looked bored during it. They continued to get up and go to the bathroom, but at least they came back every time. Anyway, I hope more people go see it, and to be honest, there weren't really any Twilight fans at my screening, so maybe they won't contribute to the success of sales...I guess we will see.

Vanessa: Okay.well.can.I.just.say..SHE IS GORGEOUS! Obviously we all know that, but wow; on the big screen! Her hair and makeup were perfect! I really loved when she straightened her hair for the date. Her smile brightens up the movie, and for me personally, she stole every single scene that she was in. Now besides her being a pretty face, her acting was great! I do not want to come off as too fan-girly and bias, but... JUST WOW! Her attitude, facial expressions, voice, and movements were SPOT ON! She portrayed Sa5m perfectly. From the minute she enters the movie, until the end, she shines. I'm not going to lie, but she actually surprised me with her acting. I enjoyed her Sa5m character just as much as Gabriella. I loved seeing her as a whole new character. I thought her acting was especially good when she sees Will watching the acoustic version of EIO, and gets all upset. That part showed me what potential she has! AND OMG OMG[Okay I am getting too fan-girly], THE ACOUSTIC VERSION OF EIO WAS JUST.... ! Her voice was so pure and beautiful! I have never heard her sing like that. I tell yah, I am gonna be sad if that isn't released in a full version! I need to hear it again! That was definitely one of my favorite parts, but I can't just pick one. I even heard one girl in the theater say..."Wow, she can actually really sing." I was very proud of her. And that little outburst she had in the alley right before they went on was just full of amazingness. Everyone in the theater was like woah, don't mess with Sa5m, and give her a minute! I also noticed that whenever she was on screen, the people at my theater seemed to really enjoy her, and laughed a lot. She was funny, sweet, and edgy, all at the same time!

Aly was pretty good as an actress, but my goodness, her voice is made for rock! Her musical talents are insaaane . I loved all of her songs, and outfits in the movie. I think she's gonna do great in the future! And personally, I think she did a wonderful job. Galean is so awesome! For me, out of the two leads, Galean was the best! He was soooo believable, and I really felt for him. There's also something about him that makes him cute. He is really talented, and I hope this movie brings him even more opportunities. I loved his interaction with everyone in the movie. He truly is the "anchor of the film"! Now, considering I am basically an obsessed 'Friends' fan, seeing Lisa in a movie was amazing. She was great, and stole all of the scenes she was in! She played the funny, concerned, and caring mom quite well. I loved her little singing in the beginning with Will in the car, I loved her cougar relationship thing , and for me, she was a major draw to the film!I really loved the Will/ Sa5m relationship. It was very cute. The human studies presentation was really great. I loved Will's, with the cute cut-outs! I liked how they showed Sa5m's reactions to it as well. Her smile ;sigh: And Sa5m's presentation...I loved the teachers comment..."that was mean" Everyone in the theater cracked up! CBCG was great as well, and I loved the little dance, and of course---Vanessa's, nope not Sa5m's, fall! The kissing scene was SOOOO funny, and I think I laughed a little too loud at that point , although everyone in the theater seemed to enjoy it. I loved the petting, the back and forth pulling with the book, and then of course, "but she's wearing a hat.." The second kiss was just Vanessa and Galean have good chemistry. And I gotta say these 2 were the main highlight of the film for me!

The ending of the movie was amazing. I was soooo pumped and excited for Sa5m, and the band. The whole DO WE WAAAAANA ROCK idea was genius. All of the bands were great! I really got into it, and wanted to dance! Vanessa was awesome with EIO, and I loooved Scott's version of Someone to Fall Back On. I also loved the Charlottle/Karen interaction at the end. I was fine that they didn't win, since that meant Will got to hear from his hero David Bowie. :-D And I loved how everyone started adding a # to their name in the myspace comments. I saw L2iz! My name is Liz! So could I say I am in the movie?

I just wanna say how proud I am of this talented, funny, and amazing cast. Nobody in ths movie was boring, annoying, or mis-cast. Everyone was musically talented, believable as an actor, and you can really tell how genuine and passionate everyone in the movie is. For me personally, there wasn't a dull moment, the music was great, and I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOVED THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Bandslam was funny, cute, exciting, sad, surprising, and quirky! Bandslam has an undeniable amount of charisma, charm, and sweetness. I really hope people go and see how great it truly is! I can't wait to see this movie at least 4 more times, even if I have to go alone. Lastly, I just want to say this movie made me an even BIGGER Vanessa fan then I already am, if that is even possible. I think this was a great movie for her to do right after HSM. Vanessa really shines when she is on screen, and really seemed like the female lead for me, personally. Her vocals and acting were just perfect. I am so proud of her, and I can't wait for everything else she's got coming up!

Oh and P.S., I went to this movie with my dad and sister, and immediately following, my dad put Van's version of EIO on his ipod. He was truly impressed with the music, the plot, and the actors in Bandslam!

You should add a "[sp]" thing in the beginning before the first sentence and close it.

P.S. Your long post is torturing me! I can't read that until I get to see the movie!

estimates are in from Nikki Finke, who is very regarded in the industry.

At least Finke pointed out the fact that despite low numbers, the film is actually getting great reviews && that marketing is to blame. && there were a couple comments (&& by couple I don't mean no one agreed with her, just that most of the other comments were about District 9 ) agreeing with her, saying the film was great && marketing failed in giving the film what it deserved.

Here's hoping that vendors keep it in theaters as long as possible to at least give it a chance to have some legs. I truly think that if given the chance it can do well with word-of-mouth && the great reviews it received. It's definitely a sleeper && a surprise for most, so here's hoping more people open themselves up to it.

Quote:
Rounding out Friday's Top 10 is Walden Media/Summit Entertainment's teen musical playing in 2,121 venues, Bandslam. It opened with only $1M Friday despite the fact Summit paired it with the New Moon theatrical trailer teaser from its Twilight Saga franchise. ("Ooooh, that Taylor Lautner is so hunky." Start gag reflex.) Though its weekend estimate is only $3M, Bandslam is getting great reviews across the country (84% to date on Rotten Tomatoes). But the marketing/packaging is so young that kids think it's High School Musical when it's closer to School Of Rock.
Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily ALIEN NATION! Peter Jackson’s Low-Cost ‘District 9′ Opens #1 With $13M Friday And $34M Weekend; ‘Traveler’s Wife’ $7.5M/$23M; ‘GI Joe’ Drops 68% For #3

I have to agree

I think the marketing of this film has really let it down. Anna, who came to see the film with me, said that when they'd watched the trailer on the Twilight DVD they'd all laughed at how bad it looked and my other friends I was talking to last night were like, "erm, nope. It looks like a rip-off of HSM."

I really hope word-of-mouth encourages more people to see Bandslam because it definitely deserves to be seen by more than kiddies.

I just wish they'd kept the name as "Will" and the trailer had focussed on the friendships/romance in the film rather than on the music. It would have drawn so many more people in

The problem is, I think eventually they did realize they were marketing it wrong after all the pre-screenings && feedback they were getting.

-- But it was just too late.

Marilyn's icon from one of the TV spots (which I FLOVE) would've been the perfect teaser trailer to put in front of the Twilight DVD because it showcases what's great about the film && what the film is actually about -- rather than it coming off as a HSM-wannabe, which is so far from what it truly is, which is an intelligent && witty teen film.

The problem is, they just barely put that TV spot together && started airing it less than two weeks ago (that's when I started seeing them anyways)
&& by then the general public already had their pre-conceived notion about the film, it's hard to get first impressions of a film to change once you've already made up your mind.

In terms of the title, it's a known fact on this board that we all thought that Will should've stayed the title. At the same time I think it was a gift && a curse because critics went in expecting something horrible && came out shocked, surprised, && actually enjoying the film; then again I think the film would've done that for them anyways. But *sigh* it is what it is, all we can hope for is vendors keeping the film in for more than a few weeks.

I'm still very proud of the fact that this is legitimately a critical success && not just with some, it was practically across the board -- nothing but great reviews. Vanessa, the cast && crew should be proud of themselves for delivering a quality teen film. Something that hasn't been done in awhile.

I know, it's really annoying.

I suppose, though, in the long-run it's reviews etc. that will matter.

It's just a shame though

I know like The Mirror said, it deserves to be a success.
Sucks when a good film doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Ironically enough, one of the comments that I was talking about said that Summit fired their PR yesterday.
