As the girls at the Forum know, I claim to be a terrible writer when it
comes to fiction (which is true – don’t believe anything Jill or Cris say!).
My skill with words is strongest (at least this is what all my
teachers/professors told me throughout my educational years)
when it comes to crafting analysis, you know – essays and research papers.
So as a student at the HSM University majoring in Kuuipology, I thought
I’d use my skill to write about a subject that’s had me fascinated since
the first time I saw the video for “Start of Something New” in the winter
of 2005. Thus, in honor of the landmark 200th Live in Love thread
at the Vanessa Anne Hudgens board, here I go…

Love Actually is….Vanessa & Zac

Ask a dozen people what love is and I bet you will get
12 different answers. In music and literature alone,
artists have struggled to define the seemingly indefinable -
from “Love is a many-splendored thing” to “Love means
never having to say you’re sorry.” The Immortal Bard,
William Shakespeare, took a different approach by explaining
what it is not in his Sonnet 116, “Love is not love/Which
alters when it alteration finds/Nor bends with the remover
to remove.” But perhaps the most famous, and my personal
favorite, definition comes from the Good Book - 1 Corinthians
to be exact - and it uses both of the above tactics:

L O V E is patient and kind;
L O V E is not jealous or boastful;
it is not arrogant or rude.
L O V E does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful;
it does not rejoice at wrong,
but rejoices in the right.
L O V E bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
L O V E never ends …

If you look carefully, you will notice a trend in each definition
– love is ultimately defined by ACTIONS rather than words.
It’s the gestures, the touches, the looks shared by two people
that profess and define the love felt between them better
than any mere words could say. With that in mind, I offer up
my own meaning of love – love actually is...Vanessa and Zac.
How can two people define love, you ask? Simply by living
their lives in love. Through their gestures, touches and looks
hey demonstrate to this observer what love should be and
prove that love actually has very little to do with words, rather
actions can speak much more louder and clearer.

Going with the premise that 1 Corinthians provides
a concise list of actions that capture the essence of love let’s
examine how Zac and Vanessa’s relationship compares to each description.

L O V E is patient and kind.

Patience and kindness are two actions Vanessa and Zac
have demonstrated towards each other countless times.
Nothing exhibits their brand of kindness better than the
sigh-worthy fact that they take the old adage, “Sharing is caring,”
completely to heart. From sunglasses to clothing and even
the occasional drink, they live the “what’s mine is yours”
concept on a daily basis. Furthermore, on several occasions, Zac
has literally given Vanessa the “shirt off his back,” which is
the definitive act of kindness. As for patience, theirs for each
other cannot be more clearly verified than by the simple act
of walking. It was recently brought to all of our collective attentions
that this couple has the tendency to “walk in step” with each other.
They often adopt the same pace and travel hand-in-hand in the same
direction. Neither pushes or prods the other to move faster; they are
plainly content to match strides and reach their destination together.
Through the simple act of sharing their lives in every aspect – from
the material to the less tangible – they personify the patience and
kindness called for when defining love.

When it comes to their relationship, Vanessa and Zac guard
the details of it quite fiercely. Consider the fact that rather than
declare their feelings to all and sundry (as other “celebrity” couples
are apt to do) they would only admit to being “really good friends”
until that claim became too ridiculous to maintain when their Hawaiian
vacation pictures hit the Internet. Yet even post-Hawaii, they remained
steadfast in their desire to keep their private life just that – private.
Souls of discretion that they are, they do not flaunt their relationship
by engaging in blatant PDAs. For the most part they limit themselves
to simple gestures that may seem small but are devastating for their
intimacy – a gentle touch to her back that lets her know he’ll always
be there, intertwined fingers that make it harder to let go of each other,
the gentle brush of her finger on his face to remove an eyelash,
nuzzling his nose to the side of her head, his hand resting comfortably
on the groove of her hip…or parts further south. This tendency to keep
mum about their relationship, something Zac once called “sacred ground,”
while letting subtle actions reflect their feelings fits perfectly with the
qualities that exemplify the meaning of love.

L O V E does not insist on its own way;

For two extremely talented individuals in a business
that requires a healthy ego in order to survive, Zac and Vanessa
have remained unfailingly supportive of each other, both personally
and professionally. Rather than resent the time apart that their
careers may demand, they instead celebrate the other’s success –
whether through attending a premiere or an awards ceremony
where one is being honored, or helping the other with a project
(a certain music video comes to mind here). Moreover, in a
business where self-promotion is part of the job description, both
do a remarkable job of keeping the focus on whoever’s project they
are there to support, despite the media’s attempts to make everything
about them as a couple. This collective attitude leaves no doubt in
my mind that they are the greatest fans of each other’s lives. In addition,
beyond rejoicing in professional milestones, they have also been there
for each other on a personal level. Through hospital stays and
recuperations, running errands for and with each other, even something
as normal as gassing up the car - no task seems too menial for them
to do together. It is that act of living – of choosing to share their
day-to-day, of rejoicing in the now and reveling in each other’s
company – that strengthens their bond and exemplifies how love should be.

L O V E bears all things, believes all things,
Hopes all things, endures all things.

In the fickle world of Hollywood, where dating is
fashionable and relationships last about as long as the lifespan
of a gnat, Vanessa and Zac have been able to buck this particular
trend. It amazes some, especially considering their youth. To others,
like myself, it just reinforces the belief that these two are the
essence of love. They have put up with the increased scrutiny and
curiosity that came with their rising stars, which was especially trying
in parts of the last quarter of 2007, undoubtedly a low point in both
of their short lives. Yet through all the stress, trauma and drama of that
time one thing never changed – their relationship endured and, if recent
candids can be taken as proof, emerged all the stronger. Also remarkably,
even long stretches apart do little to dampen the strength of their bond.
Once Zac finally came back stateside for the start of filming for HSM3
they were soon seen demonstrating the synchronicity that comes with
innate knowledge of the rhythm of the other’s body. It was as if three
months away from each other had never happened, so in tune were
their steps. Their belief in each other has been tested by distance and
scandal; they have borne the pressure of being a Hollywood “It” couple;
but ultimately with hopeful hearts they continue to endure and thrive
with each other.

L O V E never ends…

For nearly three years we have had the privilege of watching this
relationship mature and progress. Throughout that time, Vanessa
and Zac have continually demonstrated the actions that, for me,
ultimately define love: patience, kindness, thinking of the other above
all else, support of each other and a willingness to work at their relationship
so that it endures even the toughest challenges. Happily all signs indicate
that they are still going strong so that the last action – that of love never
ending – is almost a certainty. I remain in awe of the fact that we can look
at a photograph of these two from the very beginning of their budding
romance and still see the same look on their faces even today. That look of
wonder, of adoration and – dare I say – love? Because if this isn’t love, then
I don’t want love; I want what they have, and so should we all.

She beamed at the mascot. “How about a bear hug?” he asked,
s q u e e z i n g his way between the two of them.

Zac rolled his eyes as Vanessa wrapped her arms around the creature.
“Better watch out, mister,” Bear turned to Zac, “Because once they go
Bear, they never go back.” He settled in to watch the c h e e r l e a d e r s,
still wedged firmly between them.
