Storyline: Set in the 1950s, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

Carla Gugino talked to the Dish Rag today about accepting a check for one of her favorite charities, Inner-City Arts, from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. during its annual installation luncheon. And she also let on that while she may be back on "Entourage" next season, she also might sing a duet with Vanessa Hudgens in Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch," also starring Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone. "It's very surreal, it's sexy, it's got these amazing action sequences," she explains. And yes, yes, she is in that much-talked-about brothel scene. "I play dual characters as well. I play a psychiatrist in 1967 in the insane asylum, which is the present day, and then I play the choreographer/sort of madam-like character in the brothel world." Any, um, singing and dancing? "I have an little inkling that I might be part of a duet," Carla reveals. With Vanessa? "That would be great. Although she's the real deal in terms of singers," Carla said. "But I'm having fun with singing lessons."

In an earlier group interview, Snyder confirmed that he begins shooting in Vancouver, Canada, in July and goes through January. His preproduction work includes continuing to draw and look at concept art. He also revealed that he has already begun shooting fantasy sequences. Sucker Punch is the story of a girl committed to a mental institution in the 1950s who uses the alternate reality of an imaginary world to plan her escape. "The movie is a stylized motion picture about action and sort of landscapes of the imagination and things of that nature," Snyder said in our exclusive interview. "So Sucker Punch was a title that I had had for a long time that really just, to me, was about a pop-culture reference. It's about hopefully what the movie feels like when you watch it, more than a specific 'Oh, it's a story of this person.' It's all stylized." The lead actresses are going through training for the insane fights Snyder wants them to perform with guns and knives. Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung, Vanessa Hudgens and Abbie Cornish star as the inmates with butt-kicking alter egos. Snyder told us that the characters remain as he conceived them, even though actors such as Amanda Seyfried, Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone had been considered before he finalized the cast. "The characters are the same," Snyder said. "They're all inmates in an insane asylum in upstate New York, so they have personas that they sort of adopt, but it's all imagined." Perhaps that explains why Jamie Chung could play a character described as a country girl. "I don't know if you'd call her a country girl," Snyder said. "Her icon is kind of tough." In his group interview, Snyder also added that he enjoys the freedom of filming his own original script. Without the scrutiny of 300 or Watchmen fans, he can change anything he wants, because nobody was attached to his original idea in the first place.

That's what I was wondering

I was like, "AWH HE SINGLED HER OUT!!" && then I thought, "Wait, maybe they were the only two filming today"
But... somehow I doubt that? IDK, maybe he just felt that they were the two most focused throughout filming.

Either way, it pays her a great compliment not only as a person but her work ethic, "with each take. Excellent focus."

ABBIE Cornish had to fly straight into intense martial-arts training after a late night celebrating with the "Bright Star" cast. The Australian actress headed to the airport at 5 a.m. Tuesday to fly to Vancouver to train for her role in "Sucker Punch" after celebrating Monday night's premiere. Ben Whishaw, the talented British actor who plays poet John Keats in "Bright Star" [See review: Page 55] told Page Six over lunch at the Plaza Hotel Oak Room: "We stayed up having a few drinks at the hotel until 3 a.m., then Abbie had go to the airport . . . I have no idea how she does it."
