Jonny Quinn Appreciation Thread #1: Because he keeps the beat!

Jonathan Graham "Jonny" Quinn is the drummer for Snow Patrol. His previous work with a wide range of other bands led to him being described as "Ireland's hardest working drummer".

Jonny is the nephew of Patricia Quinn, who starred as Magenta in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

He's been with Snow Patrol since their first full-length release, Songs for Polarbears.

Jonny broke his arm in a snowboarding accident and was unable to play in several shows during one of the North American legs of Snow Patrol's Eyes Open Tour. Since then, he has fully recovered.

He proposed to his longtime girlfriend at Snow Patrol's homecoming show at Ward Park in 2007.

Jonny Quinn - Wikipedia

In case anyone didn't know, Jonny broke his elbow while snowboarding for the first time.

The good news is that he was able to finish the rest of the tour with the band.

Jonny's engaged!! This is such wonderful news. He proposed to his girlfriend, Mariane, at the end of their concert in Bangor - love how it happened!

Here's an article about the happy couple in the Belfast Telegraph.

I've really come to think this guy is amazing on the drums. Whenever I listen to Open Your Eyes...I just wait for that long instrumental near the end, he OWNS it!

ETA: I'm listening to It's Beginning to Get to Me, and I forgot just how amazing Johnny's drum introduction was.

Jonny really is a talent on the drums.

I agree, OYE is a great example of his playing...just fantastic at the end there!
It's such a good 'base' for all the other sounds around it, at that part.

Another awesome example of his drumming is "Signal Fire" - love the beat in that one.

Szilvia, when you typed 'OYE', I thought you meant the expression, so I was confuzzled for a moment, but I get it now.

Yes, I also agree about Signal Fire. He's just so good, I'm really noticing him lately.

I should've typed the entire title...I usually do, but not that time.
Sorry for the confusion!

I love watching Jonny play the drums, it's a treat to see him getting into the playing.

I think it's so great how he's been with the band since the beginning.
I believe I read somewhere that Jonny is like an older brother to Gary.

Did they know each other before SP was officially formed?

Gary and former bassist Mark McClelland formed Snow Patrol (although that wasn't their original band name).
Then Jonny officially joined while they were still releasing EP's prior to their first full-length album (Songs For Polarbears).

Snow Patrol - Wikipedia has it all explained nicely.

Yeah, I've read that, but it was a bit confusing to me. But I think I get it now.

Okay, no worries, I've had to read it several times, to fully grasp it all.
Just ask if you're wondering about anything else.

From what I've seen, Jonny seems like such a sweetheart.

He's one of the most amazing drummers ever! Seriously, every single time during his part of OYE, I get shiver-me-timbers!

That's a good reaction. Whichever band member(s) put together the drum section for that song was genius.

I can't wait for AHMS....I'm hoping Johnny gets another moment like he did on OYE, 'cause that would OWN!

I hope so, too...it'll also be interesting to find out if any unusual or 'different' types of percussion instruments were used on AHMS.
