BSG 3x16 - "Dirty Hands" Episode Discussion

"Dirty Hands", Sunday, February 25th, at 10/9C

After an accident nearly kills president Roslin, Chief Tyrol defies Admiral Adama to demand safer working conditions throughout the fleet - and inadvertantly makes himself the rallying point for a strike.

Looks like another "smaller scale" character driven episode. They must be saving up for the last 3 episodes, where they'll have "bigger shows" with larger plots/storylines tying in.

Alex

Thanks for starting the thread Alex. I must say I am surprised that the description says nothing about Baltar. I assumed from the previews that he had a large role to play in this episode.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

The previews do make it look highly interesting though.

I think they are somewhat misleading, but Mike...I have a feeling that Baltar will play a huge role in the last 3 episodes as S3 concludes after tonight.

I hope so. Baltar is my favorite character on the show. During the time when he was away from Galactica on board the Cylon ship. I found the Galactica scenes almost boring.

I have to admit, the show works better when all the main cast...like James, Mary, James Callis, Tricia usually as phantom six, Katie, Jamie, etc. are all on or around the Galactica.

I love Chief. Adore him, and have been so happy he's been given 2 episodes back to back... but:

I'm not sure what it is, but the last three episodes have been... off. I really like the concepts, but the execution just didn't hit the mark. Maybe it's the writers? Or the planning. Not sure... but it could use some Cylon Threat? Or I don't know Chief shooting back at Adama when he asked about what happens to Mutineers "Well, your son and Madame President seem to be doing frakkin' good."

Come ON! Lee and Roslin don't have a hole in their head... and what they did could have hurt the fleet worse than some poor people wanting respect. That's all... yes they got it in the end.... but couldn't Chief had said something before backing down?

Some thoughts on the episode. I just had a chance ot watch it today

The Good: Brillaint writting once again. I'm just so tired of shows, who avoid the reality of the situation and go for the predictable scenarios. Not on BSG. Is it popular? I don't think so, which is why I believe episodes like the last 2 weeks have been received with a little less enthusiasm. This episode was loaded with hard hitting, real life issues and dilemas. I felt that Aaron carried the episode, as he was in virtually almost every scene, but it didn't matter which side you believed was right, the dialogue in the scenes, the points that were emphasized were fantastic. The verbal stand off, between Tyrol and Adama, when he was in the brig was outstanding. Eddie delivered those lines with such conviction, but with subtle regret as well. For a minute there, you were really worried that he will go through with it if the Chief kept on stalling. The debate of issues, about social classes, predetermined life and so on was something I don't think the BSG writers are afraid of touching and putting out there, for everyone to see. Rosilin was at her very best in this episode, she came off as wise, powerful, determined, yet compassionate when she spoke to Tyrol at the very end. I'm really glad that Aaron got all this wonderful, hard hitting material to work with. Plus, all the scenes with Mary and James, he held his own.

Seeing the Tillium refinning ship was great. So many times we don't get to see the "boring every day stuff", but it's not a given, I mean it's not star trek. I want to see how they get their fuel, supplies etc. It's a big deal, esp. for a rag tag fleet of humans fighting for their very survival.

I did think for minute, that Racetrack was going to bite the dust, and we would lose one of the best pilot call signs on the show, but thank God that didn't happen.

The Bad: As much as this episode did for Aaron, Callie...characters like Cilyxsp, we didn't get a glimpse of Dee, Gaeta, Tigh, Lee, Helo, Sharon and any of the cylons except Six.

I hope in the future, when they give such a brillaint script, they find a way to include more of the cast in it in a meaningful way.

I feel that Tricia made a token appearance, almost unnecessary in this case. Of course, I'm not complaing...any Tricia is fine by me.

Katee had the one scene at the end, where we got a glimpse of the side of Kara Thrace we like so much. The fighter pilot who shows no mercy to nuggets

The Ugly: Baltar...sorry Mike, but I don't like where his character is headed. They are going to turn him into a martyr, and let's not forget, he's responsible for so much, yet he doesn't take responsibility for none of it. Infact, he's convinced himself, he's a victim of circumstances, which greatly upsets me. I have not, and will not forgive him, ever as far as his character goes for killing Crashdown in the most cowardly way. So ever since that, he's not been a likeable character, except for when he was helping Gina during S2.5 I know they won't do it, but I hope they hang his backside as the season ends.

Overall, I give the episode a 3 and a half out of 5 's

Alex
