Mini-Series to Season One Moments

Bill: "Can I get you anything? We make a truly awful cup of coffee."
Lee: "No. Thank you, sir."
Bill : "Have a seat." (Bill sits, Lee pointedly doesn't.) "Congratulations on making Captain."
Lee: "Thank you, sir."
Bill: "How's your mother?"
Lee: " Getting married."
Bill: " Good for her. We talked, you know. About a year ago, we sorta had a heart to heart about a lot of things..."
Lee: "I'm glad to hear that, sir. Will that be all...?"
Bill: "Damnit Lee, talk to me."
Lee: "What do you want to talk about, sir?"
Bill: "Anything. Just... drop that cadet crap and say something.
Lee: " I don't have anything to say. My orders said report here and participate in the ceremony, so I'm here. That's it. Wasn't anything in my orders about having a heart to heart chat with the old man. Adama's own pain and anger aren't far below the surface."
Bill: "You know... the things you said to me at the funeral--"
Lee: "I really don't want to get into this..."
Bill: "--you still feel that way?"
Lee: "Goddamn right I still feel that way. Goddamn right I do."
Bill: "It was an accident, Lee. An accident."
Lee: "So you say. I disagree."
Bill: " I didn't force Zak into flight school. It was what he wanted to do."
Lee: "Like he had a choice."
Bill "Of course he had a choice. You both did."
Lee: "Now, that's funny."
Bill "You could've been anything you wanted to be. I would've been proud --"
Lee: "A man isn't a man until he wears the uniform of his colony."
Bill: "I was trying to teach you something about duty and --"
Lee: "Oh, you taught us. You taught us so well we were trying on uniforms before we were out of grade school. Except one of us wasn't cut out to wear the uniform. Wasn't cut out to be a pilot. One of us wouldn't have even gotten into flight school if his father hadn't pulled strings to-"
Bill: "I didn't pull strings!"
Lee: "You didn't call your buddy Commander Erdwell on the board?"
Bill: "That's different..."
Lee (shouts) "When are you going to take responsibility for this! Zak didn't belong in uniform and he sure as hell didn't belong in that plane! Face it, you killed him just as if you-"
Bill :"You can go now... Captain."
(Mini-Series)

Lee: "I can't stop thinking about the Olympic Carrier."
Bill: "That was three days ago. It's ancient history under these circumstances. Leave the second-guessing to the historians."
Lee: "But don't we have a responsibility? I mean, as leaders, don't we have an obligation to question our actions to... I don't know, to make sure the decisions that we make are the right decisions."
Bill: "We did what we had to do, son. A man takes responsibility for his actions, right or wrong. He accepts the consequences and lives with them. Every day."

(Bill and Lee walk along in silence.)
Bill: "Something on your mind, Captain?"
Lee: "I just thought maybe you had something you wanted to say."
Bill: "I have nothing to say to the personal representative of the President."
Lee: "I'm still Galactica's lead pilot."
Bill: "Well, I have nothing to say to him either. Every man has to decide for themselves which side they're on."
Lee: "I didn't know we were pickin' sides."
Bill: "That's why you haven't picked one yet."

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)
Bill: "If Starbuck says they can't cut it, they can't cut it."
Lee: "She's not giving them a chance, it's day one."
Bill: "She's one of the finest pilots I've ever seen in my life. If one day in the cockpit is all she needs to know if they're gonna hack it or not, she got that."
Lee: "I'm not arguing that, sir. I'm just saying I think she's letting her personal feelings cloud her judgment."
Bill: "Please, sit down, Captain. And what are those feelings?"
Lee: "About Zak."
Bill: "We've talked about Zak."
Lee: (surprised) "You- you did?"
Bill: "We talked about a lot of things. We've been aboard this ship for over two years, we know each other very well. When I asked her to be the instructor, I knew it was gonna release a lot of loose baggage. She acknowledged it. She's a professional, she'll do her job."
Lee: "Okay. I'm just saying that... you should talk to her. She's walkin' around with a lot of emotion. She almost decked me in the rec room."
Bill: (chuckles) "Right."
Lee: "You wouldn't smile if you were there."
Bill: "I'll talk to her."
Lee: "Thank you. Personally, I think she's trying to work out her guilt over what she did for Zak. I think she's trying to make up for it by beating up on these guys."
Bill: "Guilt? Over what? What did she do for Zak?"
Lee: (surprised, again) "I- I thought you just said-"
Bill: "What did she do?
Lee: "It's not my place to say, and I've already said more than I should've. You'll have to ask her, I'm sorry." (starts leaving)
Bill: "Captain, just-"
Lee: "Dad, you'll have to ask her." (leaves)
(S1 E4 'Acts of Contrition')

(Galactica - Adama’s Quarters)
Lee: "I want you to know, I think she's wrong. I think we have come to terms with what happened to Zak."
Bill: "I haven't."
(Apollo starts to leave but then stops and turns back. )
Lee: "I need to know something: why did you do this? Why did we do this? Is it for Kara? For Zak? For what?"
Bill: "Kara was family. You do whatever you have to do. Sometimes you break the rules."
Lee: "And if it was me down there instead?"
Bill: "You don't have to ask that."
Lee: "Are you sure?"
Bill: "If it were you... we'd never leave."

(Galactica - Hangar)
Bill: "Can't sleep? I couldn't either before a big op. Mark two... good ship. Got me out of a lot of tough scrapes. Got something for you. Belonged to your grandfather. My mom bought it for him when he was in law school. See the engraving on it?"
Lee: "Yeah, I can barely make it out, but..."
Bill: "He was a better father than I was. Dad used to carry that into court cases, claimed he never lost, unless he left it behind."
Lee: So you're worried too."
Bill: "About what?"
Lee: "You know, sometimes it feels like the whole ship thinks, uh, Starbuck would do better.
Bill: "I don't."
Lee: "How can you be so sure?"
Bill: "'Cause you're my son. Get some rest, you're gonna need it. "
Lee: "Dad... I'll bring it back."
Bill: "You better, or I'll kick your ass. It's a good lighter."

Lee: "Well, I...I volunteered for this one. Kara told me about her, uh... her mission."

Bill: "Decision's been made."
Lee: "Assassination. That's your decision. That's how you resolve your differences with your superior officers."
Bill: "If you're gonna have some problem backing up Starbuck, I can find somebody else."
Lee: "It's not about me watching her back."
Bill: "I'm not going to debate this with you. This was a very hard decision. But I think the President's right. This is the best way to safeguard the fleet."
Lee: "The president? So you--you and the president--"
Bill: "Yes. She's made of sterner stuff than people give her credit for. Is this all I have to sign?"
Lee: "Uh, yes, sir. Yes, sir. Thank you, sir."
Bill: "Lieutenant. It's good to see you."

Lee: "President wasn't very happy today."
Bill: "No. Ever since you ejected from the blackbird, you've been different. Harder to reach. I'm just trying to understand."
Lee: "Well, like you said, dad. We've all been through a lot."
Bill: "Fair enough. But you should have told me about the woman."

Bill: "You give Garner a lot of credit. Well, it's all true."
Lee: "He gave his life to save the ship."
Bill: "Starbuck's report wasn't so kind."
Lee: "Well, she had her perspective. And I had mine."
Bill: "In your opinion, off the record... what was Garner's flaw?"
Lee: "He was used to working with machines. Command is about people."
Bill: "Remember that. I want you to take command... of the beast. Garner was my decision. His failure's my responsibility. Don't let me fail a second time. Congratulations, Commander."

Lee: "We have to get out of here, sir."
Bill: (on Galactica) "We can't just leave all those people behind."
Lee: "There's nothing we can do. It's taken us forever just to get to action stations over here. We're in no shape for a fight, sir."
Bill: "They'll be wiped out."
Lee: "We don't have a choice. We need to get out of here right now."

Season Three Moments

Lee: "This whole thing is frakking insane. We got two ships at half-strength. We got crews that haven't seen action in a year and a half. And you're acting like the only problem is they're not working hard enough."
Bill: "Have you taken a look at yourself in the mirror lately? You're weak, soft! Mentally and physically."
Lee: "This isn't about me."
Bill: "You've had four months to get your act together. And so far, all you've been able to frakkin' do is to complain and whine about how hard it is. Well, guess what. It's gonna get a lot harder. Do you understand me? Now I want you to turn around and get your fat ass out of here. Get your men ready! Or I'll find someone who can. Dismissed!"
(S3 E1 'Occupation')

Lee: "You can't do this. She's a Cylon."
Bill: "Well, I trust her.
Lee: "Well, that's a mistake."
Bill: "Well, it'll be my mistake, won't it?"
Lee: "You are gambling with the lives of everyone on this ship. And everyone on my ship."
Bill: "I don't need a lecture from you about the responsibilities of command. We're done here." (Leaves; Apollo follows him into the corridor.)
Lee: "I'm not finished. This entire plan is a reckless gamble. And, yes, you certainly have the right to risk the lives of the men and women under your command. But that's not the issue. The issue is that you are risking the lives of the entire human race.
Bill: "I'm trying to save the human race."
Lee: "No. No, you're not. That's what you're not seeing. Right now, the human race? Well, that's the 2,000 people huddled in those civilian ships that managed to get away when the Cylons came back. They're the safe bet. They're the ones whose survival we should guard. Just like we did after the attack on the Colonies."
Bill: "Sharon can penetrate the Cylon defenses.
Lee: "It's not about her."
Bill: "The Centurions can't distinguish her from the other humanoid models. Did you know that?"
Lee: "Admiral."
Bill: "They were deliberately programmed that way. The Cylons didn't want them becoming self-aware and suddenly resisting orders. They didn't want their own robotic rebellion on their hands. You can appreciate the irony."
Lee: ( jumping in front of him) "Dad."
Bill: "I know what you're saying. But we have a responsibility to the people that we left behind."
Lee: "Remember what Roslin said: "Our first responsibility is to the survival of humanity." We can't lose sight of that. Over the last year, we've lost sight of almost everything. We got ...soft. But if we go back to New Caprica now, and we lose, it's over. Humanity just stops. And an Admiral's stars don't give you the right to make that gamble."
Bill: "You're right, son. You should make plans to resume the search for earth with the Pegasus and the civilian fleet."
Lee: "With Pegasus? What about Galactica?"
Bill: "I know why we left those people behind. And I know it was their choice in the first place to be down there. And I realize that the survival of the human race outweighs anything else. But this time... I can't live with it. Can't face it. Maybe I'm a coward. But I'm going back."
Lee: "Dad, you won't have a chance."
Bill: "I'm going back, son."
(S3 E2 'Precipice')

(Hangar bay.)
Bill: that's the third time you've taken a look at your watch. Got dinner plans?
Lee: (laughing) "No, I was just thinking. Sharon's probably on the ground by now."
Bill: "I know. These are your orders. (Hands him brief.)) You'll find the rendezvous point there. Take the civilian fleet. And wait for me for 18 hours. If I'm not back in 18 hours, then find Earth."
Lee: "Yeah, right."
Bill: (quieter) "I'll see you at the rendezvous point."
Lee: "18 hours. Try not to be late."
Bill: "I'm getting old. I'm a little slow. But I'll be there."
Lee: "Gods, I wish I could talk you out of this."
Bill: "You can't. You tried."
Lee: "You know Dad, um --"
Bill: "Don't. Don't make me cry in my own hangar deck."
(They shake hands and embrace.)
Lee: "Okay."
Bill: "I'll see you there."
Lee: "Permission to leave your ship, Admiral."
Bill: "Permission granted, Commander."
Lee: (from a Raptor's wing) "Attention! Commander Pegasus departing." (They salute each other.) "18 hours."
(Adama watches him leave.)
(S3 E3 'Exodus Part I')

Bill: "I guess you didn't understand my orders, huh?"
Lee: "Never could read your handwriting."
(They hug)
(S3 E4 'Exodus Part II')

(Adama's office.)
Lee: "We're starting to see a rash of "missing persons" reports."
Bill: "Well, we left thousands of people on that planet."
Lee: "No, this is different. These are people known to have survived, but who've gone missing since the Exodus. Jammer for instance."
Bill: "Deck hand. I saw him yesterday afternoon."
Lee: "Yeah, but he didn't report at muster this morning, bedcheck negative, sickbay negative. It's like he just vanished."
Bill: "How many people are missing?"
Lee: "13 as of today. Two on Galactica, 11 elsewhere. Every one of them confirmed as a survivor by multiple witnesses and then poof! Gone."
Bill: "Keep me posted on any more "missing persons." I wanna know about it."
Lee: "Yes, sir. Now if you'll excuse me. I have a date with a jump rope."
(Bill stares.)
Lee: "Hey, I've dropped half a stone."
Bill: "Keep jumping."
(Lee taken aback, leaves.)
(S3 E5 'Collaborators')

(Galactica: Adama's Office)
Bill: "I shot him down."
Lee: "Well, if you shot him down you had your reasons, you were following orders. Preventing something worse. Right?"
Bill: "No. I shot him down to avoid... detection. Protect the mission. So it wouldn't be discovered by the Cylons. It was a black ops mission whose sole purpose was to ascertain the likelihood of a Cylon strike."
Lee: "Cylon strike? So you're saying that -- that we knew they were out there? That they could launch an attack on the Colonies?"
Bill: "We didn't know anything for sure. There were theories in some circles that the reason that the Cylons had stayed dormant for so long was because they were building a war machine. Preparing a strike."
Lee: "But I thought… I thought that no one had seen or heard from the Cylons in over 40 years."
Bill: "That's true. Partially. The Admiralty had grown restless with the Adar administration. They thought we were resting on our laurels, unprepared to protect against an attack."
Bill: (over a flashback to the Admiral's office) "My mission was to escort a stealth recon ship just beyond the Armistice line, stick our nose over, gather evidence, see if there was any suspicious activities."
Lee: "And if the Cylons discovered you across the line breaching the Armistice, then, uh... they would see that as…"
Bill: "An act of war."

Lee: "So the attack on Novacek's ship -- the one that winged him and the two dradis contacts that were following him… They weren't Taurons. Those were the Cylons."
Bill: "For all those years, I told myself that I didn't know what they were. But I was just lying to myself. Pretending that it couldn't be true. It is true."
(Long pause.)
Bill: "I started it. Initiated it."
Lee: "Wait a minute, started what? Started what?"
Bill: "The attacks on the Colonies. By crossing the line, I showed them that we were the warmongers they figured us to be. [He begins to cry. ] And I left them but one choice. To attack us before we attacked them."
Lee: "No. No. Because it wasn't just you. They put you there. They put you there, across the line. You had no choice. That was the Admiralty. That was the … that was the military. You were one mission. You were one man. one man."
Adama: (quietly, wiping his eyes) "It only takes one."
(Lee looks at his father, who stands; Lee cries.)
(S3 E8 'Hero')

Lee: "Morning, Admiral."
Bill: "You look like you had a good time."
Lee: "Yeah, it was some party."
Bill: "Yeah, well, it's been a hell of a morning too. You missed all the excitement."
Lee: "There's problems upstairs?"
Bill: "No. No, good things. Kara got married. Believe that?"
Lee: "What?"
Bill: "Yep, 'bout an hour ago. Found herself a priest, went down by the river and got married."
(Lee chokes.)
Bill: "You okay?"
(They spot Anders and Kara coming down the street.)
Bill: "Can you believe that? (He chuckles.) Well, she deserves it, man. We all deserve to be happy. I also gave her permission to muster out along with Tyrol and Cally, a few of the others, so it'll be up to us to make sure there's no mass exodus"
(S3 E9 'Unfinished Business')

Season Four Moments

(Galactica: Tactics)
(Lee is watching the video of Kara's death, over and over.)
Starbuck: "They're waiting for me."
Apollo: "No! No!"
Starbuck: "They're waiting for me."
Apollo: "No! No!"
(Adama, interrupting) "What should I believe? Should I believe my heart? Or my eyes?"
Apollo, on video: "Come back here. Come back!"
Lee: "Well, you know where I stand."
Bill: "I want to believe her. But the President's right. It's exactly what the Cylons would be counting on."
Lee: "So I guess you're not changing course."
Bill: "For the time being, we follow the President's lead."
Lee: (sitting down near his father) "She still staying in your quarters?"
Bill: "Just until we find a place to put her up to finish the rest of her doloxan treatment."
(Bill turns the video off and the lights on. They don't look at each other for a while.)
Bill: "I want to thank you for suiting up during the fight."
Lee: (smiling tiredly) "We needed everyone up there."
Bill: (placing Lee's wings between them) "We still do."
Lee: "I took those off for the wrong reasons."
Bill: "Put them back on."
Lee: "Baltar's trial may have been the trigger, but, um... This is a feeling I've been having for a while. It's time for a change. I need to move on. I've had some feelers from the government. There's a ... position ... opening up. And I think I can make a valuable contribution there. Maybe even more than in the cockpit." (stares, then looks away from him.)
Lee: ... "Dad, what if Zak had come back to us in that Viper? If my brother had climbed out of that cockpit would it matter if he were a Cylon? If he always had been? When all's said and done, would that change how we really feel about him?"
S4 E1 'He That Believeth In Me'

(Adama's Quarters)
Bill: (packing) "I hear you're keeping Zarek as Vice President."
Lee: "I can use the advice. And as long as he knows he's heard, I think I can trust him."
Bill: "Don't know if I agree with your thinking, but..."
Lee: "Well, I could say the same thing about yours."
Bill: "The only difference is, you are gonna be President. I'm just getting in a plane."
Lee: "Waiting alone in a Raptor, while the rest of the Fleet jumps away, that's not just getting in a plane. That... That sounds a lot like... Well, that sounds a lot like suicide, Dad."
Bill: "At least this time I'm only risking my own neck."
Lee: (voice cracking all over) "So I guess it won't matter if as President I order you not to do this?"
Bill: "I don't know if I ever told you this, but one of my first missions was a solo recon. Being alone in a Raptor in enemy space... I'm not going to lie to you, I was scared. I told myself that I was doing my duty, and ultimately I faced my fear. That's a good memory."
Lee: "Why are you doing this?"
Bill: "Because I can't live without her. And Laura is gonna get to the rendezvous point. I have to believe that."
