Oscar ads prove that women finally are in the driver's seat JENNIFER WELLS February 23, 2008 The incomparably gorgeous Diane Von Furstenberg strides across a snowy landscape. She gazes skyward and captures a photographic image of barren tree branches set against a wintry sky. Artistic inspiration, one understands, as captivating as ice crystals. Ms. Von Furstenberg's own voice guides the narrative. "I didn't really know what I wanted to do, but I knew the woman I wanted to become," she says. The camera then captures the designer with the mile-high cheekbones in her studio, and it seems impossible to imagine that more than 35 years have passed since the launch of Ms. Von Furstenberg's signature, body-hugging wrap dress, which has once again become all the rage. It's regretful that this latest commercial for American Express, which launches tomorrow night during the Academy Awards, has to be described in such detail, but unless you have your rabbit ears twitching right over the U.S. border, thus capturing the ABC signal, you won't be viewing Ms. VF in all her fabulousness. That's a shame, because the 60-second spot, directed by Bennett Miller (Capote), is a lyrical piece of cinematography and exemplifies some new right thinking on the part of advertisers. We know that economies rise and fall on the backs of consumers and we know that women by a vast margin are the decision makers when it comes to what gets bought and what doesn't. That's not new. But there are some fresh, bright moments in advertising that at long last recalibrate the power, intelligence and sexual allure of the dominant buyer. Even car manufacturers are catching on. Case in point: Cadillac, a weary cat that years ago shed its premium allure, came back. But what is currently making the brand hot in advertising terms is the sight of Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy; Private Practice) at the wheel of the 2008 CTS sedan. "In today's luxury game the question isn't whether or not your car has available features like a 40-gig hard drive," says the actress with the sky-high eyebrows. "It isn't about sun roofs or sapele wood accents, pop-up nav screens or any of that." Slight pause. "The real question is, when you turn your car on, does it return the favour?" Now that's a great ad line and one that accomplishes that rare feat, at least in North American marketing teams, of crossing gender boundaries. (Will Ferrell shilling beer in short shorts on the Super Bowl may seem funny to some; not so much to others.) The Kate Walsh commercial has launched and will air during the Oscar ceremony. A second Escalade spot addressing a woman's desire for great cup holders over other ancillary items will be telecast to the U.S. market only during the Oscars. Yes, it's easy to start feeling like a poor second cousin, not unlike Super Bowl Sunday in which ads launch down there but not up here. As with the Von Furstenberg spot, what resonates in the Walsh ad is its smart sensuality. And it's refreshing in both cases to see sensuality affirmed in women over 40. (Over 60 in Ms. Von Furstenberg's case.) In an interview with Automotive News last week, Cadillac's global marketing director said Ms. Walsh had suddenly become "the Cadillac icon" and that the commercial has helped the brand "find its voice." That seems stunning for a brand that once seemed as fashionable as the old matching-white-belt-and-loafers. GM has sharply targeted its audience here: The Academy Awards, after all, have become known as the Super Bowl for women. And this year's show will be rich with women who artistically reflect what Ms. Von Furstenberg talks about in her commercial: Sarah Polley, Ellen Page, Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie. The artistic world is not new to the embrace of this reality. But the commercial world? It's about darned time.

aww Ash we have something like that here in germany too, but its with a guy and well I have to say I never watch it and I am not a fan of many german celebrities.. so.. and I would really like to see Kate cooking hehe

lol i don't really watch Rachel Ray either i've just seen it, flipping channels and well when i was younger and i stayed home sick from school i would watch the food network because daytime tv is awful. I'm not sure if Kate will be cooking with Rachel but that would be really cute to see.

We have programme like it in here too, but i never watch anything Finnish stuff, cause they suck so badly. But i would looove to see Kate cooking too!
