The Psychology of House

Ok, let's roll and take this forum to a psychological level. If nobody is interested, it is a waste of time and someone in power will close this thread. I can live with that because I can say I tried, right?

I'd like to unrevel the different characters in the show with you all starting with Gregory House, our hero.

For the last couple of days I have been scrolling through all threads, regularly ('exploding ovaries' and 'Hugh-gasms') but also with my mouth open at the downright heroic status of House, a man who is so frustrated and damaged that no one will be able to live with him. His beautiful blue eyes, his wit, his IQ and his sarcasm makes us drool at the guy, making us blind for his egotism, his total lack of respect for others (including his friends) and the pain he causes around him.

One question, and I only want honest answers:

Do you think that House would get away with all that if another actor (ugly f.i.) had played his part???

Honest answer: NO! There is something about Hugh Laurie that makes being an ass okay

Hugh has this amazing ability to make House human did that make sense?
So when House says something that's out of line, we all are thinking, " I was thinking the same thing, wish I could say that to my boss"

If another actor had been give the role of House, I don't think it'd had made it to a second season. Hugh's ability to act with anything...Like steve for example is awesome. Not everyone can do that. and the rest of the cast feeds off of that

If everybody was on the show excet for Hugh, say Hugh was replaced with Kefier or Matthew Fox, (I find only one of them easy on the eyes The show would not work...

There are lots of people who don't find House/ Hugh attractive, but still enjoy the show. And there are tons like me who have always loved him and found him adorkable. I think what makes House so sexy is that we all love everything about Hugh, his writing, music and other movies and tv shows and that carries over into House.

I probably didn't answer what you were after, but that was fun

Feels like one of my ovaries is ready to bust Hugh just makes that happen

Ok...I have to be honest so my answer is NO. When you see Hugh as House, House can do whatever he wants and for me that's perfectly ok. There is something about him..I can't explain why but I could forgive him everything. With that puppy-blue eyes, and humore, good-look he is just adorable....

But, on the other hand, I know people who like House but don't like Hugh. Because there is something equaly attractive about House too. With his bad attitude, great humor, good-look, and golden heart hidden behind that attitude he is just too adorable and no one could resist him. Sometimes you just want to hug him and told him everything will be ok.

Few moths ago, I had a little convesation with friend who don't like House at all:

Friend:" How can you love someone like that? He treats women like dirt, he doesn't care about his patients and his friends, he is junkie, he is just miserable bastard..."

Me
:" Well, some of that might be true, but he deep inside he is great person. And he might be a jerk but adorable, hadsome and sexy one. So who cares? "

I guess my answer to the question can be distilled from this picture of Hugh.

A Naughty Child. Children are easy to forgive and hold a promise.
Naughty is always nice.
His way of dealing with serieus problems is by way of wit.

And it works, for him and his team and especially for the fans. He can be an ass whenever he wants, because every now and then he grants us this look... and is forgiven.

House sure knows women. From a distance.

Yeah...That look always works... He is just adorable... Awww

But the point is, he offends people but it's just to make fun of them, not like he really wants to offend them. I remember when he made Cuddy cry and later she said to Wilson:"Now I realise that House never tried really to offend someone, because when he wants that, he knows where to shoot." (or something like that).

Yeah, that is what makes him so forgivable, because you know deep down that he does care, even if he won't/dosent show it and when he does it's always very guarded

Exactly

His first goal is not to be liked, so he has completely ruled out the word 'tact'. The ones that can look behind his mask of sarcasm are truly worthy of him.

In real life I don't think any person could get away saying the things he does. House as a character seems to be missing some kind of "human filter" if you will, he says what he thinks when he thinks it. In that respect he is like a child. He doesn't do it to intentionally hurt people, he does it because he feels it's right. Truth can hurt but so can lying. Which would you like to hear? The painful truth or sweet lies?

As to if he could get away with the crap he says if someone less attractive would play him... I don't know. But the fact is that Hugh Laurie isn't necessarily every-one's ideal man. I mean he is handsome yes, but he happens to be tremendously talented. He has amazing comedic timing and he can nail those House-isms every single time like clockwork. Even when House says something incredibly insensitive, Hugh can still somehow give the character that little humanity so he can get away with it. When he says something plain stupid just to piss Cuddy/Wilson/Cameron/Foreman/Chase/Ducklings2.0 off, that's where Hugh's comedic background shines through. He can make us laugh without moving a single muscle in his face and yet you know House is goofing off.

I am forever thankful that Hugh sent that audition tape to Fox and that Bryan Singer, David Shore and Katie Jacobs could see just what kind of amazing talent they had in this man. Because quite frankly, Hugh Laurie is House.

@RayRox That's the best conclusion I've ever heard. Hugh Laurie is House.

And about House... If he is really mean he would do things just because he wants to. But he do that because it's right thing to do. And no matter how he hates to spend time with patients, he'll do whatever it takes to save them. Their lives are important to him. And that kind of a person can't be bad, no matter how bad he seems to be.

Like I said Huddyfan, I think Hugh is acting out a different part of his character. Remember, he has a past of depression and from experience I know that it makes you stronger and more aware of yourself. You always look for a way out. Humor makes everything easier, it helps you see the ridicule of everyday life. Beside the depression, Hugh also has this authentic and totally timed manner of expressing himself by means of humor. It is an art. Making people laugh helps him deal with his own emotional probs, I am sure of that. Humor is the best way to stay around.

Hugh and House don't differ all that much, although I think Hugh has more compassion for the people around him. Damaged, but not to the degree House is.

@HouseJunkie Agree with you. Hugh make House looks better. I think Hugh treats people better than House, and like he said once about himself:"I'm a fragile flower".

OK, next step. the women that work with House, starting out with Cameron.

How does her character relate to that of House?

I believe it was the first or second eppy of season one that House tells her that he has hired her because of her appearance. Beautiful face, nice ass. Cameron is quite pissed which is totally understandable.

But what do you all think was the real reason for hiring her?

I think House hired Cameron to solve her and her puzzle. As he said in the first episode she must be damaged and he wanted to know why.

As I see it, he must have felt that there is a mystery in her and he needed to solve that. Also she is very smart and of course I believed him when he said he hired her for her looks!
