Zac Efron Says Shooting ‘We Are Your Friends’ Reminded Him Of His ‘High School Musical’ Days

Before Zac Efron hits the beach with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the recently announced big screen Baywatch adaptation, the former Disney Channel star is looking back at the role that launched him into superstardom: High School Musical‘s Troy Bolton.

Efron said he was reminded of Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), Ryan (Lucas Gabreel), and the rest of the gang from East High while shooting his upcoming musical drama, We Are Your Friends.

As it turns out, the film — which features Efron as an EDM DJ who dreams of becoming a record producer — was shot in the San Fernando Valley, which is coincidentally where Efron lived during his High School Musical days.

“I mean around the time High School Musical started I lived for like three or for four years in the valley,” Efron said in an interview with E! News. “We shot all around the house that we used to bum around at. We even filmed at some of my favorite restaurants. Like I knew every location, every place we go it’d be reminiscent of [my] 15 to 17-year-old self.”

If New York City can have Sex and the City tours, we see no reason why the San Fernando Valley can’t have its very own “Life and Times of Zac Efron” tour!

Until that magical day, we’ll just have to continue following Efron on the big screen.

Zac Efron no longer recognises Breaking Free from High School Musical

When we caught up with Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Max Joseph, we decided to play a little game. The three of them star in We Are Your Friends - a movie ALL about music. So, we got them to have a go at playing Beat The Intro for the very first time.

None of them had a bloody clue what One Direction's 'Steal My Girl' was and then, Zac broke our hearts, with his attempts at guessing High School Musical's biggest song.

As the chords began, it took Zac a few seconds, but he did know it was a HSM number at least. The problem came actually naming the title. Cue 24 long seconds of waiting for Zac to try and remember his own song, while pulling some of the cutest faces of all time.

To be fair… it was nearly 10 years ago and he did get there in the end (with a little help form us pointing at the phone when the right lyrics came up). But how could you do this to us Zac? That song should be on your iPod on repeat. Trust us, you will grow to love it all over again.

(Also, shout out to Max for asking in shock: "This is your voice?!" Yes and isn't it beautiful.)

To be fair, he didn't even sing Breaking Free except in the beginning and he hasn't heard the songs in at least 6 years so

lol that was so funny though. Zac's like there was three movies lol. So if anyone going to be watching the 3 movies on Disney Channel this week because they are having this musical movie week this week and I think its Wednesday they will be showing all three movies. I think I might at least watch half of the second and the whole third movie depends on what time I get out of work and which movie is on.
