Possibly. Maybe he is just sick of all the 'so what's really going on with you and Vanessa?' questions. And maybe if he is a bit more obvious that they would stop being asked.

but i'm gonna go with he's just utterly infatuated with the girl, && doesn't realize that he's staring for that long, until she looks at him with that "we're doing an interview right now" look

it's almost like the elementary interview all over again!
